So far, it is only available on iTunes. Apparently, its a radio edit and it runs at 3:52. I think the outro has just been trimmed. What a great song though. |

This is clearly Pixie-esque--with the whole name change and everything, right? I guess I like it and it's growing on me after three listens now, but I think I now know what he meant when he said those new Pixies songs came off as a bit 'fakey.' Again I'm pretty sure I like it, but at the same time don't really know what to make of it just yet. Wonder if it might work better with a minute or so trimmed off it. |

Let's not forget that Bluefinger is in effect a pastiche, or a collection of vignettes related to Herman Brood. So we hear glimpses of the subject's style through FB's music. Bluefinger is a akin to a palimpsest. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palimpsest |

Sorry. It is clearly NOT Pixie-esque. Nothing on BLUEFINGER is Pixie-esque. Sorry.
To those who got the download and are familiar with the BLUEFINGER version, does this edited version lose anything as it is almost 2 minutes shorter? Honestly, I think THRESHOLD APPREHENSION is a bit boring compared to some other songs...but that's just my opinion. I think TPB, even TBR or YMIM would have been great singles.

TA is probably the most "accessible" song for the so-called alt-rock crowd nowadays. But damned! does it rock hard. |

GEE, Let's start with the name Black Francis. Sure it's Pixie-esque, come on. And I guess, just one thing that made me use the f-word (fakey) is why does that woman have to whisper 'threshold apprehension' like she's Kim Deal whispering Debaser? It's a little weird... but I really like it. |

Well, it's sound pixiesque at times for obvious reasons, New Bolero. When you hear other songs you'll recognize several other influences (or connections) like Sonic Youth and... the Breeders. But this is clearly a FRANK BLACK/BLACK FRANCIS album(I don't care how he wants to be called now, could be RÉJEAN LACHAPELLE). As someone else said, his signature is everywhere, in the sound, the structures, the lyrics, the tempos... one of his best album, if not the best, imho. |

Here's a review:
Black Francis - Threshold Apprehension
Black Francis as we know is a legend, but as we’ve seen on countless occasions in recent decade’s legendary status generally equates to god-awful quality control.
Thankfully Sir Black Francis is a different kind of entity to his relentlessly disappointing peers and thus ‘Threshold Apprehension’ stands as a brilliant shock of fire-brand indie rock that adds rather than dilutes to Frank Black’s impenetrable heritage.
With the presence of some glorious ‘woo-woos’ and Back Francis’ gnashing drawl working overtime what you’re left with is a single of pure perfection that should by rights be hooked up to the pipe-cleaner arms of fledgling rock bands via a throbbing great intravenous drip to give them just some idea of what being a legendary rock frontman really entails.
For further details on the download availability of ‘Threshold Apprehension’ click here.

Floop: I don't think so. Angels, Discothèque, Pasty do not sound Pixiesque at all to me. |

I would put it this way, Charles wanted to write darker, avante-garde, music for the pixies. The fact that he chose a dark, avante-garde subject to write a complete disc about is hardly coincidental. That being said, I agree with those who see at least half the songs fitting with FBATC or post Catholic FB. On the other hand, anyone who says that TBR or TA or TPB don't sound like potential Pixies material are just being obstinant IMO. Of course they may sound different and even be arranged differently if done by the Pixes.
I think the man was trying to get into a 'Black Francis' mindset and it led to Bluefinger. As a complete album, no it does not feel like a Pixies record. Not to me anyway. Maybe he saw that as well and decided to do the stripped down approach to it and on the 8th day he rested. It was good.

Poor attempt at being literal Transmarine, clearly I said, "I would put it this way..." followed by "I think the man was trying...", so, you can stop your google search for the transcript from teh press conference.
A bit ironic that the guy who states as fact "Sorry. It is clearly NOT Pixie-esque. Nothing on BLUEFINGER is Pixie-esque. Sorry." has a problem with emphatic statements, even though you misread mine by a mile.

I don't think there's a "Pixies sound" or a "Catholics style" - just the inspiration of a genuine artist evolving and maturing through the years. Btw, I'm damn sure the Pixies would have ended up recording a "Black Letter Days" or even a "Honeycomb" if they hadn't broken up in '92.

I do not agree with this, sorry. The Pixies magic was fading out, replaced by Frank Black's since Trompe Le Monde.
BTW, anybody noticed the keyboard on Threshold? Reminds me of EDF on the Orange album. |
