I would appreciate hearing from anyone with information concerning the two Oddballs releases. I looked through the 4 pages of topics in this forum and the discography here.

Seems that I've read somewhere that the 14 track Oddballs was an official release available to members of Frank's fan Club (?). Is that correct.

And, what about the 26 track Oddballs. From the looks of the packaging that mine came in, it is not an official release. Was there ever an official release of the 26 track Oddballs?

They are incredible additions to my collection and I am thoroughly enjoying them.

Oddballs 14 track is an official release and was available for sale either as a full package cd ( through the official website ) or as a download only. Oddballs 26 tracks is just a crappy bootleg.

When I bought my official Oddballs it was via the Artist Direct network. They had sites and stores set up for lots of artists. The site was www.frankblackdirect.com and then it was gone.

Yeah, I know what you mean, the official Oddballs is very elusive (hell, for that matter, so is the bootleg version).

I got mine (the official and the bootleg) from Ebay. Paid about $30 bucks (for the official and $20 for the bootleg), but worth every penny.

I can't wait for Frank's official B-Sides live versions from the Catholics, the one he has discussed in the forum.

I've got most of his singles which contain the B-sides, but I'll always welcome more compilations.

On the Oddballs CD there is no mention anywhere (on the disc, on the digipak) of a record label. There's no record company and no catalog number.

I'm inclined to think that Frank financed Oddballs himself and then ended up licencing it out to ArtistDirect, selling copies to labels he worked with, and selling it at his shows. If I remember right, Oddballs was talked about as early as 1997 or 1998.

Frank got into the whole internet distribution thing early on. The first Catholics album was available on the 'net as a purchase-able download in 1998, I think (anticipating stuff like iTunes).

I think Frank can be seen as a pioneer
nowadays he's waiting what to do with the pixies album
(you know that interview with record companies, schmecord companies? Full of thought about what the do on the crossroads of record companies and internet. I bet it will be something quite different when it comes out, no big label, maybe as a distributer.)

Oddballs is available for sale somewhere out there. Can't remember where, but it's no more than $15, brand new and sealed.

Strange. I bought the 14-track one at a record store in downtown Minn.
You're saying it was only available online?

Jop, you are correct. Frank can and should be seen as a pioneer,
not just for his music but also for his business acumen, for lack of
a better term.

I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank

Yeah, I saw some copies of Oddballs in record stores. And I think I got my copy from some indie US store along with the Nadine US single.

you can download 10 tracks from iTunes. $9.90 and a burnt CD might be enough to get you by until you can get the real deal.

I know I might be a bit late to this thread, but I found the 14-track version (instead of the hobbled version on iTunes) available for purchase/download on eMusic.com:

http://www.emusic.com/album/10606/10606861.html

I haven't read the details of their 'free trial' yet, but it may be worth registering just to grab that and skedaddle!!

EDIT: On second glance, they have a few listed as unavailable...and it seems to be the same ones missing from iTunes. I wonder why?

Damn! A week ago they had the tracks iTunes was missing available but had other tracks unavailable - a mistake on eMusic's part. I brought that up with Ken since we were planning to address the difficulty in finding Oddballs on the next podcast - that iTunes was missing some and eMusic others - and asked why. The response was basically that those 4 tracks are owned by the record company. They'd gotten a license to manufacture the CD, which was limited to the CD itself and eMusic. When it was time to renew the license for other uses, such as iTunes, they put a bunch of restrictions on the songs and so, I guess the thought was, "to hell with it". That they used to be on eMusic was an oversight that has been corrected, and now the license is up to date again.

However, while that eliminates our solution for Oddballs, Ken did have a bit of consolation for you guys, which we'll reveal in a little less than two weeks. It will probably never see a reissue by the sound of it so this may be the last chance to get a copy for a while...

I'm selling my Oddballs CD on eBay if anyone's interested. I'm purging before I move to Seattle this summer. I bought it at a Frank Black and the Catholics show (I think it was at Irving Plaza in NYC) I would've offered it up here if I'd thought about it first.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160106416033

I might be selling my Everything is New and / or Nadine CD singles as well. I'm not sure if there's that much of a demand for those though...

Nice. This is like Bluefinger. Leak the idea to fb.net, and then watch demand soar. This copy of Oddballs is going to make $100 on eBay.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

The first time I ever heard about Oddballs was when DITS came out, back in early 2001. There was a little card inside that announced its existence to me. I ordered it off the WAR website immediately. It was really cool to be able to instantly collect a lot of the b-sides I didn't have yet. With my purchase I also received a CD sampler of other WAR artists--the two Frank songs on the disc are "St. Francis Dam Disaster" and "Bullet."

Oddballs is worth having just for the bassier mix of "Baby That's Art" alone. I prefer it to the original mix--and it's longer to boot.

Does anybody have the tracklist for the unofficial 26 track version? I'm pretty sure I've got everything but I'm kinda curious what's on there.

I've got way too many CDs and need to purge. Some of my collector's items I'm keeping, some I'm not. I never listen to Oddballs and thought someone else would get more use out of it. I realize that the auction is going to get up there in price, but thought I should mention its availability here.

I hope I can make this kind of scratch on my Everything is New CD!

http://cgi.ebay.com/Frank-Black-And-The-Catholics-Everything-Is-New-Import_W0QQitemZ230096184631QQihZ013QQcategoryZ307QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

Is it worth hanging on to a CD you don't use just because it's a collector's item? Not to me. I'd rather use that money to buy more music.

Definitely. Oddballs Baby is better than Cult of Ray Baby.

I've seen Oddballs in stores several times. Next time I spot it I'll buy a copy and let you guys know, if someone's interested.

How much value does it add if the CD is signed by the artist? I took my Oddballs (no pun intended) to a full band show last year to get it signed by Frank, and not like I'm planning on selling it, but how valuable do you guys think it is now?

I consider a signed original SSMVGD record to be priceless in the Land of Frank, and Oddballs not far behind. In the Land of the Living, I can imagine more people bidding for it than say an unsigned one. A mini bidding war between, say, 10+ people?

I know you're not selling, but what you would get for it would not match the loss you'll feel some years later.
