If I could afford to travel down there I'd snatch your hand off. It's just too dear for me at the moment. I was really hoping there'd be a Manchester of Liverpool date.

sorry hit post new reply by mistake...
Started off like the other european shows with an acoustic set, just Frank kitted out in a black suit and shades, a handful of songs in and Frank introduced the band. Then fired into 10 Percenter (losing the suit jacket and shades). This is the 1st time I have seen a Frank gig where he has not played guitar....just waltzing around the stage like a possessed tazmanian devil with the mic. Loved the tracks near the end where Frank tried to smash up the drum kit and sang the second half of a song straddled on the bass drum.
Then at the end of the gig, Frank popped his jacket back on and his shades and just stood at the front of the stage, absorbing the fnas and the attention.
Frank has previously stated he is no dancing bear, tonight I think he was. This was a treuly awesome gig and one of the best.
Loved the backing band and am curious to know who they all are...? However I prefer to see Richie Gilbert on lead...
Sorru I do not have the set list...

My God what a night!
Never seen him in his "man in black" stage persona. Loved the theatrical touch to the evenings unconventional proceedings.
Started with the man in a suit on guitar in a single spotlight, singing in the most simple way and almost suckering you into thinking that was the show.
BUT WAIT...
The second act of the show kicked off and suddenly there's Frank in TOTAL command, no guitar in sight and completely at ease taking the title of FRONT MAN quite literally.
It was performance in a way that I've not seen him do before.
Even the lighting set up owed more to the theatre than your usual rock and roll rig.
The sublimely charming Manitoba was beautifully executed and if you stood at the back there was a truly magically moment when you see this sort of backlit halo around Frank whilst he's singing about seeing the face of God and not being afraid, and there's this volume of people almost waiting at his feet swaying in agreement like he is a lost prophet and holds some innner wisdom.
I love this whole new staging of a Frank Black gig; and I love that its clear he wants to make each tour different and interesting for the audience too.
What really stands out is how much ENERGY he still has - I was sat on top of the side bar thinking of how much extra physiotherapy I was going need whilst he's up there like he's 18 and just got the biggest gig of his life.
Which, you know, was like major cool and everything right...
Just ignore me; I missed the last train home, I've had 2 hours sleep (persuaded the bloke to pick me up and drive me home from some God-awful hole of a place I've only ever been to for a funeral).
London transport need to be kicked in the taco & I love Frank like an old boyfriend from your teenage years; but goddammit, I am never going to another gig on a sunday night in West London...unless I book a hotel room first...

my ears are still ringing!! i've lost my voice. we drove to Brixton Academy instead of Shepherds Bush and I've never heard such a kick ass version of California Bound before.
The band were on fine form, in fact, the band were amazing. If this show doesn't travel stateside then you've seriously missed out on something really special. You should have seen the looks in my girl's and bro's eyes. I think they've been well and truly converted. They were 20% Black; 80% Pixies. Not anymore.
The only downer was some girl beat me to the fb tee that was for sale.
oh, and any reviews you've read regarding the band being a bit whatever, setlists too short, Frank being a bit this a little bit that.... they were just warming up for this show.

the tee could have been a cheapo one made by the venue, not sure. it was black, had frank black written on it inside borders (you know, like a 10 point star thingy that's been stretched to fit in the words) that were the colours on blackfrancis.net.
can't help with the setlist. sorry. threshold / lolita / tight black rubber / ten percenter / california bound (f'in rockin) / rockafeller / old black dawning (played so fast) / Ramona / Deadman's Curve (amazing!!) / Manitoba / Remake-Remodel / acapella 6-66 that lead into a song i forget.....
And the venue was rammed!! I couldn't believe how packed it was (no offence to fB). it was heart-warming. |

Excellent show. Support was awful, though. |

Setlist (not really in order, that's not the way my brain works):
Acoustic: Headache Velouria (aborted, with a gag about the dangers of having a third drink before a show) Cactus Sir Rockabye The Water I Heard Ramona Sing Horrible Day
Band: Ten Percenter (opener, supposedly Charles Normal's choice) Los Angeles Old Black Dawning Thalassocracy Freedom Rock Six Sixty-Six (acapella) Robert Onion (final song) California Bound Massif Central Manitoba Dead Man's Curve Captain Pasty Threshold Apprehension Lolita ("Skippy wants Lolita, Skippy wants Lolita") Tight Black Rubber You Can't Break A Heart And Have It Remake/Remodel The Rockefella Skank
As for the show..... to quote that bloke from the Sun-Ra Orchestra.... "Boy, you sure can holler!". And boy, my voice sure is suffering this morning from trying to keep up (you'd think I'd have learned by now; at my age). As a performance, quite astonishingly ferocious.
If someone had told me back in the day that eventually I'd stand and watch when Frank Black humped the drumkit while shrieking The Rockefella Skank, I'd have been really disappointed that my life was obviously destined to descend into a terrible void of hallucinogenic drugs and absinthe. So it's quite a relief, really.

I think I must be the only person so far on this board who didn't really enjoy this show. Well, that's not quite true - I did enjoy the acoustic set. As far as the band goes, I think they murdered 90% of those songs. Don't get me wrong, I was one of those who wanted a shift away from the MOR Frank Black of the last couple of albums, but this band, in my opinion, just couldn't deliver these songs. There were exceptions, of course. Ten Percenter and Manitoba were pretty good, but even Threshold Apprehension didn't sound as powerful as it should have done.
The band just didn't have a feel for the rest of the material. Jason is a great drummer and just about held it together. Charles is a very good guitarist, but he's not Dave Philips, and he couldn't really carry the songs without Frank's guitar. For me the real problem was Ding, which was a surprise. I thought he did well in PJ Harvey's band and other things, but he was consistently behind the beat and very crude in his playing style, which really damaged some songs. I suppose it's a bit unfair to criticise players who've only just met each other, but this was almost embarassingly like watching a version of Frank if he hadn't sold a single record since Trompe le Monde and had picked up some local guys to play in a downtown bar in a one-horse town.
That said, I thought Frank was pretty good as a 'frontman' and I loved him sitting on the drum kit! But I did think that maybe he was disappointed with the quality of the band too - he just seemed intent on getting through the experience and it didn't look too much fun for him. We didn't get an encore and I thought that his comments on there being an 'unprofessional evening ahead' were about more than the mistake he made in his solo set.
Still, this was 500% better than most other things you're ever going to see. Perhaps Frank set too high standards for himself with the Catholics.
And all that because sharks Twenty-five people kill every year. All that because sharks from time to time are made the teeth. All that I always knew it by reading the Telegram of Brest. All that I will always know it when I read the Telegram of Brest

I thought the drummer was a bit shakey in plaeces tempo wise, he seemed to speed up or slow down a few times....
I too missed frank not playing guitar, he usually has a chubby guitar sound and a raw way of playing, the other guys sound was quite thin sounding...I think for me I just loved the return to the rock! and the addition of a few new songs that I hadnt previously heard (from blue finger I guess?) all of which rocked like my mother doesnt...all in all a turn for the better with FB...(I think threshold would have benefited from a second guitar for sure...)

I thought it was the real deal. Properly loved the whole thing. It looked like fun to be on the stage, and I think the band were excellent...not super tight, but really feeling their way through the songs which is how it should be if you ask me. I liked the fact that this was an unpolished show, it's much more interesting to watch that way, and I feel I see more of the personality of the band members when the songs are not so cast in stone by lots of instruments and complex arrangements. FB was brilliant in hes new not-so-thin-black-duke persona..acting in tight black rubber was cool and super hammy. Quite cunning to do only one UK show but make it a really good one with a full room...the venue is one of my favourite of the larger type, with all that great plasterwork and a nice atmosphere. Saw Bright Eyes there a couple of weeks ago and, compared to frank, it was nothing. Frank challenged the audience. Great fun. Got fucked by the Kings X to cambridge train though and had to crash in London...took ages to get to work today, as trains still screwd, but well worth the effort. Any Pics??? |

This is my first post!! I got to chat to a few forum members at the party after and it was a pleasure to meet you, Crackitybones in particular!
Was also a bit of a thrill to meet the man himself! (Of course, in an ideal world I wouldn't have been sweat drenched from the scrum at the front) And a relief to meet such an interesting performer who wants a proper conversation, not just to be worshipped!
As for the show itself, fair does, the Bush sometimes falls short on acoustics but not tonight! Second best show I saw, but Njimegan wins for the pure energy and intimacy afforded by an audience of 200.
Would be cool to hear your thoughts xx Laura

oh yeah, they actually had some nice shirts in Europe but they sold out! grey with Frank Black in Black and Black Francis in (white) like a kind of reflection underneath...sadly only boy sizes tho :( best shirt since Dog in the Sand, which makes, um, two desirable frank shirts thus far.
Much as I love the music, FB has some ropey graphics out there (and yes, he's a man of integrity and all that crap doesn't really matter etc.) - but perhaps that's all set to change now Julian is working for him!? |

The band was a bit scrappy, the bass in particular sounded a bit off, not sure if it was the sound or the playing, but these are details, I still thought it was great musically. In particular, Threshold Apprehension sounded fantastic, it isn't really my favourite song off of bluefinger, but live it sounded much better.
The only thing I didn't really like about this gig was the atmosphere. It depends where you were I guess, but where I was standing it seemed like 60% of the people had never heard a Frank Black song before and even Los Angeles was met with blank stares. I knew it would be like that to an extent and it can't really be helped, but it did put a bit of a dampener on the experience when you're watching some of your favourite music surrounded by people completely indifferent to it. I see nobody else felt that way in their reviews here, so maybe I was just standing in the wrong place.

i was down at the front with the rather small but happy mosh pit. i went the toilet during Ramona, and towards the back of the venue there didn't seem much partying going on. just people stand there beer in hand. i checked out the balcony and again just folk sitting there motionless. i had a great time whatever. that was the main thing for me.
and the bass on Massif just blew me away. |
