PIXIES ~ Live 01 April 2007 Avica Resort, Gold Coast, Australia (V Festival)
Rating: Ten out of Ten.
Wow, what a wonderful, memorable gig. Tonight really blew me away. I had just seen the greatest band on earth, playing in their prime, at home. I was in a trance most of the time. It was a case of classic after classic being blasted out with barely a breath taken in between. My head was just spinning the whole time. The sound was perfect too. Incredible!
So happy that PIXIES found the time to finally make it to Australia, as brief a tour as this is/was. Thanks Charles, Kim, Joey + Dave.
Btw, I bumped into Myles Mangino after the gig and spoke a few words about the tour, FB and Breeders projects in the works, etc. MM is a really great guy. He even gave me a set-list as a memento. My lucky night. Thank you! I will have to check later, but I am fairly certain the songs were played in the same order as per set-list. Which has been pretty standard for all of the Australian shows so far. Not too many surprises:
1. In Heaven 2. Wave Of Mutilation (uk surf) 3. Bone Machine 4. Monkey Gone To Heaven 5. U-Mass 6. Head On 7. Caribou 8. No.13 Baby 9. Tame 10. Hey 11. Gouge 12. Mr Greives 13. Holiday Song 14. Here Comes Your Man 15. Planet of Sound 16. Debaser 17. Crackity 18. Something Against You 19. Isla De Encanta 20. Nimrod's Son 21. Vamos 22. Where Is My Mind? Encore 23. La La Love You 24. Gigantic

If the Pixies played a new song, it would die of loneliness. |

Thanks 1965 great review. Just curious, do you know what the #s on the setlist mean?

Thanks... I think the numbers have something to do with the stage-lighting matrix they were using, as the set-list came from the soundboard and lighting desk.

great, FB 04-07! If you pick the best songs from Honeycomb, FM/RM you could have the best FB record anyway. Don't know how it would mix up with FBF and Christmass. But the first Best Of is mix of pre-catholics and catholics work and that is just as weird musically. Can't wait for September. That new Breeders record seems to sit on the shelve forever.

For those on Usenet, someone has just posted this show (224-kbit MP3) to the following groups: alt.binaries.sounds.mp3 alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.bootlegs alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.indie
Sounds like an audience recording. |

it's too bad they didn't do something April Fools related. like just play Skynard covers.
then again, that might not go over well with Aussies who waited 10 years to see them
jamming good with Weird and Gilly |

I wish I hadn't been so busy, I really should've looked into getting to this. Ah well, glad it was a great show.

Yes, this was an awesome show. Incredible to finally see the Pixies after loving them for almost 20 years & it being such an amazing and powerful show. Full credit to the sound guys too. This was definitely the best sounding festival show i've ever heard. Cheers to Myles too, a true gentleman. See you in Tasmania.
it didn't have anything to do with anything |

Definitely the best Pixies performance I've seen. On stage banter from Frank about how the beach balls had to stop was priceless. They cut Monkey's Gone to Heaven to bitch about the balls, then proceeded to try and find their place in the song..not a 'by the number gig' for a change. Each song had extended solos without Frank singing which put most of us out expecting each song to follow the same beat as the CDs. (As most of their gigs that I've seen have been.) Kim and Joey even choreographed a jump together at one stage, and there was a point where the entire band appeared to fall asleep at their instruments and hold it for what seemed like an eternity only to bounce back harder than ever...and worth the price alone to hear Planet of Sound and Head On. Great work guys.

I've got quite a few live recordings of them over the last couple of years and also from back in the day and this is something that i've noticed also - it was kinda funny hearing the audience adjust their singing rhythm to his. But what impressed me the most was the energy Frank put into his vocals - it was soooo much more than I've seen in the videos or heard previous in the live recordings (and he looks like he's in much better shape now, maybe that's got something to do with it?) But anyway - thankyou so much pixies for coming to australia! |
