Ok, I admit it, I've been watching "American Idol" with a fervor this season. I never really paid attention to it before, but I got hooked at the end of last season. It's much more entertaining than I expected -- and I can't help but note here that one of the top two contestants (in my estimation) has the last name of Doolittle. That should give her some cred around here, right?
Ok, everybody, bash away at me. Tell me I'm a loser. I deserve it.
(By the way, I've scoured this board several times and can't find an active "American Idol" topic. I hope I'm not duplicating existing efforts in creating this thread.)
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

That's all you've got, homers? I was hoping for a real thrashing here. Come on, somebody insult my mother or something. I, a devout fan of Frank Black and other agreed-upon good music, just said I'm a fan of a show where the goal is to produce crappy pop acts that will sell a billion records.
EDIT: Just so I'm clear, I do hope this turns in a discussion of the show. So after the hopefully extensive coastline-bashing is finished, let's talk "Idol," people!
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

I must come to your defence, Coastline. 'American Idol' is shown over here too, and like our original homegrown version, it's very entertaining in the early stages when populated by the supernaturally inept and mentally ill. Car crash tv at its best. |

I'm glad I wasn't the one who made this topic, but I do watch it. I watched it for the first time last season and have been watching this season. Would I ever buy an American Idol CD? Never. It's just entertaining to watch.
Sanjaya sucks! He better get voted off tonight. |

Ok now I don't watch American Idol, but I have heard people talk about it. There are so many reality shows out there now that I try to make it a point NOT to watch reality tv. Is it really reality? Is American Idol the one with a brother and sister competing against each other or is that on another show? I would kind of like to know how that turned out.

I don't consider American Idol a reality show because the concept is pretty surreal. The concept doesn't happen in "real life."
There was a brother and sister on this season and the guy made it and is still on (Sanjaya. He sucks.) but the girl didn't make it very far. |

She's a badass, and I never get tired of her being surprised that people like her. I go back and forth between her and LaKisha. I could crawl up in LaKisha's bosom and live happily there for years. She could sing me lullabies.
You're totally right about Sanjaya, ProverbialCereal (can I just call you Derek?). His continued presence on the show is proof that the voting process is a complete joke. But hey, it gives people something to bitch about -- and ain't that what we all really want?
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

I like Lakisha and Doolittle the most. One of them should win. There are really only about 2 guys that are pretty good, the others are kind of boring and just don't have it in them to win. The other girl that I like is Jordin.
Yes you can call me Derek, coastline. ha. Much easier to type anyway. Sanjaya has no dynamic in his voice. It's basically the same decibel level the whole time. I like making fun of him though. |

I agree with OLDMANOTY. It doesn't sound like Coasty only watches the early stages though.

Homers knows me well: I haven't missed a second of the show this season. I enjoyed the train-wreck TV at the beginning, but now I'm really into the competition.
I think the draw, for a lot of people, is that average joes like myself can watch for a couple weeks and hold a relatively intelligent discussion about who has the best chances to win and why. I've spent considerable time discussing voting tactics with a number of people, and I think I could handicap the last 11 contestants pretty well right now. (Sanjaya is next to go, followed by Haley and Phil, not necessarily in that order. The competition likely will come down to LaKisha and Melinda, but Jordin and Chris Richardson are serious dark horses who could sneak up at the end.)
In the end, it's mindless and forgettable entertainment, but it's been a great way for my family to have a fun hour or two together a couple times a week.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

I agree, when it comes to how the public will vote, I find it pretty easy to predict. It's comforting to know I have the world pegged.

Does anybody care that Sanjaya's going to walk away with the whole prize? It's annoying, but it's not the big deal some people are making it out to be. People think it's ruining the integrity of the show. That assumes it had any to begin with. It's mindless entertainment, and that's all it should be viewed as.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

I read yesterday that some woman started a hunger strike until one of the contestants is voted off. Ha. I respect people with convictions though.

I watched the last 10 minutes of an episode once.
Coastline, you should listen to some "Symphonie Fanastique" by Hector Berlioz, particularly the 4th movement. Much much better than anything you'll hear on American Idol.
Oh, and once I performed extensive fellatio on a dog who looked so much like your mother that I couldn't tell the difference. (yes, that sentence is supposed to imply that at one point, I did engage in sexual relations with your mother). |

It's ok to watch the show. The show's harmless. Our hang ups about it are not. Wish I was back to watching tv cos I'd definitely be tuning in. It's genius. Is Cowell still on it?

I've never seen it. Well, I saw about 10 minutes when my in-laws were in town and had to watch, but I left the room.
I'm able to somehow avoid these things. I never heard "Stairway To Heaven" until I was like 25.

10,000+ users on this forum, and only ONE took the bait? No, nobody did a Pixies song. Which is probably best. THAT would tarnish their legacy way more than recording a shitty new album ever could.
