...so I was thinking about an old college friend from last century, and wondering if he was still alive. I would have no way to get in contact with him, and knew nothing of his whereabouts or anything for the past 14 years, and decided to GOOGLE his name, but I wasn't too excited about weeding through the 10 billion results as his name is extremely common.
But to my amazement, he was the third result on the page...but I couldn't be sure until I accessed the address. It was a website for custom web designs...and the visage of my friend was staring back at me! It was his company, and I couldn't believe my luck...or my eyes...for what I was reading was unbelievable. He had a little bio about himself, and apparentley has been big on the rodeo circuit (!) for the past ten years in Texas (he is from California). Atop his head rested a big ten gallon cowboy hat. Unbelievable and truly bizarre to me. I don't think I will contact him. As much as I thought it would be fun, now I just realize there was a cosmic reason for our friendship to be limited to college years. And I can't quite explain why...
Anyone else have any funny or peculiar stories pertaining to old friends/whatever they found on the internet?

My goodness. That's like the internet equivalent of running into somebody you haven't seen for years on a trip abroad, or something. Although you did try and find him. Maybe you should a kind of X-Files FBI agent, knocking on peoples doors: "You don't know me, sir, but I knew your son. He's wearing a cowboy hat now? The truth is put there!"
I thought this was gonna be a 'Whatever happened with this?' joke thread. |

Somewhat off-topic...
...speaking of running into people in weird places...
I moved to New York after college for a couple years. One day, in between shifts (I had two jobs), I bought a walkman from a little electronic store in Times Square...and I bought it because it was a recordable one. This was back in '93, so it was still somewhat high-tech. Anyway, I'm standing outside the Shubert Theatre on 47th, in Shubert alley actually, with my recordable walkman on record, and hidden in my coat, picking up ambient city sounds. A friend from college 2 years earlier comes walking by!!! From California!!! We both are flabbergasted at running into each other 3500 miles away on different coasts...and I have the whole chance encounter on audio! It was an amazing incident.

I made a friend while in Dubai (who was from there) about four years ago but quickly lost touch with him. A few months ago (in the UK) I went into a random pub to use the toilet and there he was - singing in a band that were playing that night. Probably more chance of winning the lottery.

classmates.com is a nice place to start looking for someone you went to high school with. Just to see who is doing what.
it was kinda cool. i got an email from someone i haven't even seen since graduation in '93.

When I first went to college in Wyoming in 1990, I made friends online (IRC) with a girl who lived in Missouri. Though we didn't meet, we did strike up quite a friendship, and traded a lot of e-mails and letters for a couple years. As time went on, though, we drifted, and the friendship sort of disappeared into the ether. And then in 1999, my wife got a job in Denver, so we moved here and found an apartment not far from where I work now. Lo and behold, living down the hall on the same floor of the same building was the girl I'd known online -- but never met. The whole situation ended up being a bit awkward, and our real-life friendship was nothing like our online one (maybe on account of my getting married in the interim, I don't know), but I've always been struck by that strange coincidence.
The other interesting thing is that we ended up working at competing newspapers here in town, though she soon moved on to a paper in another part of the country. If she were still in town, she'd be working one floor below me, since our two papers basically merged a few years ago and we share a building now.
Anyway, has anyone else had a chance encounter with an "online person" before, and was it kind of awkward?
