I suggested Diane Warren for the pure pleasure of reading all your comments trashing her brand of puke songwriting but not one taker. Go on indulge me.

C'mon! Maybe I missed it but has no one mentioned the legendary Jonathan Richman?! He's one of the very few that compare.

David Tibet of Current 93 is also an amazing songwriter.

Other than that, Lou and Waits.

Thanks, grotesque. I haven't seen all his movies yet, a lot of his early Mexico based films are really difficult to get, or out of print altogether. I've seen most of his later French films, and some of the very early ones too. I guess he's vaguely related to Frank Black too with the whole "DebaseR" thing.

Jonathan's latest, Not so Much to Be Loved as to Love is his best in a long time, really great record. A bit more quiet and restrained than his other work, but i love it. :)

Cool, I thought he was kinda turned off, the good Jonathan...
About Bunuel, from the mexican films I recommend you Archibald de la Cruz, El, Los Olvidados, The angel exterminator. Neither do I have seen all of them... (is that the good way of saying it?... it's not in any FB song that gramatical form)

to read his posts (and especially the french ones) is an ordeal. so i'm not gonna stay without reaction when he directs his shitty posts at me.

I've just remembered, Bjork's as good a songwriter. The two have much in common. Both started around 1987-8. Both sing with passion about nature, environment, technology and space and both use "the scream' to astonishing effect. She's got to be his closest comtemporary.

Mike Patton sung on Bjork's Medulla, and Carcass remixed Isobel, apparently she has a broad musical tastes. She also collaborated on an album called Gling Glo that was supposedly Pixies-inspired.

Gling Glo's the one by her I've benn listening to most lately. I played my sister-in-law Pabbi Min and she remembered how her cousin Teddy had sung it at his father's wedding when they were kids. But Charles could happily sing about the landscapes of Iceland I'm sure.

Okay, I'm going to second a few of these, and maybe add one or two. My criteria are based on the full experience of the songs, throughout the catalogue. Lyrics, music, repeat listenability, and presentation.

It's tough for anyone to beat Dylan. He had some rough years and some rough albums, but they all had their high points. However, even if you base it on "Bob Dylan" through "New Morning" and throw in "Blood on the Tracks", "Desire" and "Love and Theft", I think it's pretty definitive.

Tom Waits. Tom Waits is just...un...believable.

Lennon/McCartney, nuff said.

Page/Plant. Zeppelin was one of the most consistently great bands ever.

Hendrix.

I think that's about it for the "as good as" category. There's a damn good reason why Frank Black is my favorite artist.

I love this part... Yeah, we did it!

If you're going to write something this stupid you should back it up or further explain. Which fret is the cut off for songwriting? How high pitch can you go before you're no longer songwriting? I understand that some guitar solos, (especially from the eighties), are crap and consist of fast fingers and no melody, heart or soul but so do some songs and song writers. I know plenty of songs that wouldn't be the same without their solos. Guitar solos can be a huge part of song writing and they can be insignificant. The point is not to group them.

Luis Bunuel, good call on pointing out the neglect of Jonathan Richman. Considering the fact that the Man wrote a song about him it should have been obvious a long time ago.

trobrianders, good call on the Bjork. A surprise mention on this male dominated rock-centric forum.

And now my own contribution:

Bob Marley - Should be here already, but I'm not incredibly surprised that he isn't, given the range of names so far.

Bradley Nowell - Not surprised in the least that he hasn't been mentioned yet, but definitely worthy of being included. Very much an underrated artist, who, like the Man, will eventually be revealed to all as the preeminent musical genius of his generation.

I really really want you to eat more cheese

But two of my favourites are Paul Kelly (aussie, lyrics are musical poetry..amazing) and Desmond Dekker (im the son of a jamaican)

paul mccartney ?????? are you joking ????

he can only rhyme house with mouse, and that's it. he is not a songwriter - he has absolutely nothing to express. zero. his songs are totally boring, artificial and meaningless. "all he ever did was yesterday" - and that he borrowed from somebody else, if one believes the latest gossip. my impression of paul mccartney is, that - in terms of art & talent - he is the most shallow & boring person one can imagine. of course, he has an ear for melodies, but that is all ! he has absolutely no idea what a song is. has anybody seen "paul mccartney in the abby road studios" ? god, that was painful.

among the songwriters i praise are syd barrett, bob dylan, beck somehow, howe gelb, john lennon, roger waters, suzanne vega. and some others, like my girlfriend. oh, and how could one forget cat stevens and the guys from souled american.

I joined the cult of Souled American / 'cause they are a damn' fine band

The original poster wants others to suggest songwriters as good as Frank Black.

Posting a topic like this on a fan forum is, of course, preaching to the converted – not unexpected and nothing wrong with it (per se)

However, what constitutes ‘Good’? That’s always going to be subjective and so as to make this a little more qualified my list is based on songwriters who have achieved commercial and/or critical success over a long period of time:

Carole King
Joni Mitchell
Burt Bacharach and Hal David
Elvis Costello
Holland, Dozier and Holland
Elvis Costello
Bruce Springsteen
Barry Gibb (and his brothers)
Prince
Paul McCartney
John Lennon
Pete Townshend
Neil Young
Keith Richards and Mick Jagger
Peter Gabriel
Kate Bush
Bjork
John Fogerty
Bob Dylan
Bob Marley
Ray Davies
Roy Orbison
Tom Waits
Jeff Lynne
Nick Drake
Brian Wilson
James Brown
Chuck Berry
Paul Simon
Etc.

N.b:- No one said that they had to be performers as well
