Nick Cave is great... I have only heard Abbatoir Blues and Lyre of Orpheus, that's why he is not in my list. Those two albums, particularly AB are great!

Dunno about songwriting, but I saw Thurston Moore do a very entertaining solo just pulling on one string and taking the guitar cord in and out of socket. It was just a lot of noise, but the only other bands I've seen do feedback/noise better than that live were Flaming Lips and Love & Rockets. Not a huge Sonic Youth fan, but they certainly broke some ground. It just depends on if you like that ground or not.

well yeah, soloing has nothing to do with songwriting. did lyle ever wrote one good song ? (everybody's got the beat? eh). songwriting : writing songs. means structure of the songs/chord progression, means arrangement, means vocals dynamics. sonic youth ? what ground did they ever break except beating world records of drugs abuse and being super obnoxious? these people never put out one good record. fucking overestimated junkies and zero songs.

certainly not so. beauty in art has nothing to do with "subjectivity" or whatever word one uses to signify their unability to understand aesthetics. read hegel, my friend. and kant wrote a little blurb about this, check it out !

Exactly my point when I pointed out (in the "International Songwriting Competition" post) to Coastline that FBF was going to Judge. I think the competition chose 'succesful songwriters' as judges because they have ability to "understand [the] aesthetics" of songwriting. Coastline disagreed ("its not about being #1, moksha").........I gave up because the argument is somewhat subjective |

So far as I know, Duane Allman has all of one half of one songwriting credit to his name, but for all the writing chops of brother Gregg and Dicky Betts, the reason the Allman Brothers Band is esteemed today is largely due to Duane. And not just for the soulful tone but also for the songs he composed within songs, often simply as he went, there at one gig or another. Virtuosos don't get enough credit. A lot but not enough.

so true. lyle didn't get any credits, still, TOTY would have quite an inferior album without him. me, coming from punk rock (buzzcocks, wire, pixies), i always used to vomit virtuosos cause ya know music should be done by anybody, that kind of shite. and then i heard lyle and thought "virtuosos... they're cool".

I was sleeping just fine and then this crash bang wallop... Truth is I don't mind. Rather machete wounds than safe playing. But you protest too much. No one trusts that. I just want your respect - ha ha. Easy does it say some but alas easy has never done it. One guitar should be enough for anybody. See.

Coastline, my touchstone. Got a new one for you. How about Diane Warren? Everything Frank's not including hugely sucessful. I made it. I'm back on-topic.

I am a litte bit surprised that we could find so many artists "as good as Frank" in my book, he's the tops. I have respect for many of the artists listed here...but I don't think they compare. |

fine. let me suggest a list of prerequisites for the new members to agree on or otherwise they re outta here :
1. FB is always right 2. FB cannot be wrong 3. In case of an issue, see points 1 & 2 4. In consequence, there should be absolutely nothing else than pure enthusiasm about what the man does, e.g. no critique whatsoever, no skecpticism and above all there should be no question that he's the the greatest singer/songwriter/poet/cook/etc... ever.
i think this is a minimum and should make the discussion so much more interesting. maybe i'll move to albania too.

I am new here, but here is my 2 cents worth on this subject. I am a fan of all kinds of music. I only began listening to FB couple weeks ago when my good friend got me hooked and i cant wait to get another fix. FB is the Best everything! I don't even listen to anything else anymore. Everything else seems um...well i cant think of the best word right now, but you all probably understand what I mean. |
