Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.
After 20 years I finally got to see the man play live. Apollo at Hammersmith last year. So god does exist it seems. What a dream collaboration it would be if Tom Waits produced a Pixies record, an idea that Charles has been floating. I've sometime wondered if the TW album Bone Machine was any kind of reference to Surfer Rosa's opener. Does anyone know?
PS Thanks for the youtube link coastline. I downloaded it (keepvid.com)

Great call. Howe Gelb is quality. Neko Case is getting there too.
Tom Waits, Frank Black and Nick Cave are my holy trinity.

If you look at the sheer range of styles he's explored, Robert Smith has to be near the top of the list. Prior to Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss me, the Cure albums were basically solo albums. He did all the writing and arranging of everything.

This video comes from a Pennebaker documentary on Bob Dylan titled , "Don't Look Back"....this is from a scene where donovan (who had only been around for a bit) was being dubbed the euro-dylan. I think they were trying to say he was "as good as" Dylan. In this scene donovan witnesses Dylan's brilliance:

Oh....I'm not digging at Frank Black saying he's not "as good as" Dylan, because he is precisely that to me, a neo-troubadour..... I'm questioning some of these "as good as Frank" posts and wondering if they really are.....

It's all subective, moksha. OLMANOTY believes Robert Forster and Grant McLennan are as good as Frank. junkmale believes Ryan Adams and David McComb are as good as Frank. I don't believe any of them are, but then, I don't expect anyone to agree with my own choices. For me, this thread is all about discovering some names I hadn't known before, not saying anyone's absolutely as good as anyone else.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

I agree, it is subjective......and I do value new names to discover. Dogbowl was one on this post that I was unsure of.......I looked him up and realized he used to be with King Missile.
Here's one to check out:
Mark Linkous .........he's "Sparklehorse" |

Check out this site.....Frank Black's picture is on the front page as a judge. I guess all of the judges are going to have to be as "objectively subjective" as they can be ....or "subjectively objective" in order to determine a winner.
http://www.songwritingcompetition.com/prizejudge.htm
I agree that determining 'who is a better songwriter than who' is subjective.......but are some subjective observances of more value than others??? I think the "International Songwriting Competition" commission believes so........ |

Like this thread, I don't think this competition is all about who's best. It's about encouraging and rewarding great songwriting and pointing out its value. Obviously, someone has to win, but it's not all about #1.
I'm really full of shit today, moksha. Forgive me if I seem like I'm picking on everything you say.

Certainly subjective. I'm with the crew that says that even when you look back over a truly prolifically-grand scope of work, to folks like Bowie, Dylan, Waits, Townsend, or even Lennon, Frank's the guy, subjectively, and with full relalization that naming superlatives within the realm of the aesthetic is folly almost by definition.

Subjectively speaking, Dylan's my man. He had an entire generation hanging on his every word. Frank's got, well, this forum hanging on his every word. Still, he's a close No. 2 in my book. And at this very moment in time, Frank's writing better songs than Dylan is. |

Bonnie "Prince" Billy
Bonnie "Prince" Billy is, I believe, a stage name.....His real name is Will Oldham. If anyone hasn't heard of this guy I highly reccommend checking him out. He certainly stands up as a Great songwriter. |

Sparklehorse are good but they, or rather he, kind of ran out of ideas after the second album, so in my book Linkous isn't on the same plateau as FB |

I would say the following are as good as Frank, and who I love to listen to:
David Bowie Neil Young Jason Lytle (just started getting into Grandaddy... amazing group, pity they are no longer around) Elliott Smith Robert Smith
It's early morning so I am sure I am missing out a few other people. The above for me are pretty much the guys who I consider my favorite songwriters. Couldn't really say who I like best really...
This is a high class bureau de change, not some Punch & Judy show on the seafront at Margate! |

This thread's thrown out some fine names I hadn't heard of but I gotta say I'm surprised Nick Cave went by with hardly a mention. Is it that no one's listening or do you guys really not rate him?
