It's ok Erebus, this thread is about other songwriters.
Liz is clever, funny and slams political correctness. She's still a breath of fresh air.

Yes, that is what I meant, and I thank you, and speedy. speedy has long given me more attention than I deserve. Thanks speedy: I've noticed.
Opinions that are often so diametrically opposed to mine, so well stated and thought out, are hard to ignore. I find such methodical madness fascinating. Though it surprises me to hear that you don't really pay attention to lyrics; I would have put you at the top of the scrutinizers list. I love trying to decipher his songs, though sometimes it takes me years to come around to it. Of course it always adds immennsely to my appreciation.

The fact the Lou Reed hasn't been mentioned yet is pathetic. I hate you all.

well that erebus/speedy thing left me confused. erebus says one thing, i disagree and say the opposite, speedy says erebus already said what i think, erebus confirms i was correct in what i thought he meant (thus my statement was not the same as what erebus said), yet speedy is congratuted for giving erebus attention. confused. anyway, john lennon.

trobrianders - that actually is one of my favourite lines, and not at all a naive one. Dylan is singing about a world gone wrong, about a desperate messenger trying to deliver one last warning, and at the same time, an up-and-coming student one upping his former masters. Recall the earlier lines:
"gentlemen" he said I don't need, your organisation, I've shined your shoes, I've moved your mountains, I've marked you cards, but EDEN IS BURNING".
And really, how come only one person mentioned LOU REED? How come the name of David Bowie was not mentioned for himself? Where is someone paying tribute to Tom Verlaine? and where are all the worshippers around the music of the patron saint of travellers lost, lovers abandoned, and hope betrayed: Leonard Cohen |

And let's not forget that fine examples of the lady's songwriting are also to be found in the works of Throwing Muses and 50 Foot Wave. Of the former, I'd personally recommend getting "In a Doghouse", "The Real Ramona" and "Limbo". The latter have released a mini-album called "Free Music", which can be downloaded for, well, free, from http://www.throwingmusic.com.
I'd also like to add Vic Chesnutt to my list.

Jediroller, have you heard Kristin Hersh's live cover of Vic Chesnutt's 'Panic Pure'. I'll load it up somewhere if you like.
coastline, I would recommend KH's 'Strange Angels'. The earlier Throwing Muses songs are harder to get first time 'round. Took me a while anyway.

he´s one of my favourites too. He´s broader than just one country though, there are resonances in his songs you can feel in pleasantly shitty bars or streets in so many different parts of the world. The Black Rider alone picks up on musical feelings you can experience in some of the most farflung places.

That's absolutely right. I once played billiards with a midget 'til the rain stopped in a bar in Hamburg. That's a true story. Not to be too literal about it.

Ian McCulloch of Echo & the Bunnymen (songs like The Killing Moon, The Cutter, Back of Love, etc are amazing)
Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine (unfortunately turning out to be this generation's Brian Wilson)
I don't consider either the equal of FB but both have put out amazing, inventive music if only sporadically.
Others I admire are Glenn Danzig (notably in the Misfits and Samhain, Jarvis Cocker (Pulp, the equal of Morrissey lyrically but writes music as well), Joey and Dee Dee Ramone, Robert Smith and Martin L. Gore.
But nobody can touch FB IMHO.

I'd definitely agree with Stephin Merritt. Scott McCaughey is also pretty high on my list, as are both Johns from TMBG (I'd rank Linnell somewhat higher, although Flansburgh's skills are often underappreciated), and Andy Partridge. I'm sure no one who knows me at all is surprised at any of these picks.
I'm very lyrically oriented, but I also appreciate a good melody. I know nothing about all the technical stuff, though. Some people go on about chord progressions or production values or whatever, and while I'm sure I notice these things to an extent in terms of thinking certain things sound better than others, I can't say I know what they mean.
As for Liz Phair, I've only heard her first three albums, and I like whitechocolatespaceegg quite a lot, while the other two are more hit-or-miss (some great songs, some not-so-great). Oddly enough, it's more her voice and the general sound of the songs that appeal to me, and not so much the lyrics. But maybe I'm just trying to be different. :P

Not laughing, but I think Ghostface is better than Biggie. He leaves me speechless.
Anyway, as far as pure songwriting goes, I think the best are Frank, Elvis Costello, John Linnell (They Might Be Giants), Ben Weasel (Screeching Weasel, Riverdales), and Paul Westerburg (Replacements). I have to admit, though, I'm really unfamiliar with a lot of the writers you guys are naming. |

I couldn't figure out those Karissa551 posts at first. There were five of them all at once. They were all kind of insulting. The other four questioned the use of a word in a post, putting that word in quotes. It took me a while to realize they're spam. They're just pimping those two links in the sig. They might even have been computer-generated. Pretty clever, I guess.

Yeah, but bands are different than songwriters. I think that's why David Bowie may not make the cut. I don't think he's the complete package of songwriter - he has help writing the songs, doing the production, etc. He's a genius of art, for sure and great lyricist, but I don't he fits the songwriter bill.
Same with Arcade Fire. It's a collective effort. Great bands is its own thread!
Lou Reed is a good call maybe, but I have idea (pardon my ignorance) if he writes all his own music. VU is one of my favorite bands of all times, but again, it was a collective effort and I don't know if Lou Reed was the primary creative force or just a piece.
That's I say Robert Smith and not The Cure. The band has been incredible in all its forms and deserves credit for their place in hbistory, but Robert Smith has always been the main songwriter and creator of their unique sound from the beginning. It's completely his vision.

Maybe. I dunno. In the sense that "hey, anyone can be in a band"? Everyone loves Elvis too, but I don't know how many bands he started.
I really think Pixies probably actually influnced more people to pursue a career in rock music more than any other band in rock history. And we got some damn fine bands to listen to out of it!

Please don't take any of this as though I'm bashing the Pixies. I'm not. I love the Pixies. The Pixies were very, very influential in that way, but not even close to the scale of the Ramones! No way! I know I'm not the only one that thinks so. Maybe the Pixies inspired more mainstream types of bands (Nirvana, Radiohead, etcetera), but the Ramones singlehandedly defined the sound of punk and I know for a fact that the formation of the Clash, the Sex Pistols, and the Replacements, as well as more underground acts like Screeching Weasel, the Queers, Furious George, all of my previous bands and all of my friends' bands - so, so many - were direct results of hearing the Ramones. Nobody I personally know started a band because they were inspired by the Pixies, and very few of my favorite bands ever cite them as an influence. Maybe that says more about me than it does about the Pixies, but I always thought it was rock gospel that the Ramones were THE BAND that inspired people to do rock themselves.
But, anyway, I digress.

I also thought of Dr. Frank/Frank Portman (MTX) and Vic Ruggurio (Slackers).
I've got to get some Tom Waits stuff. Everybody keeps naming him, and I like Frank's versions of "Black Rider" a lot, plus the only good song (except maybe "The Crusher") on the last Ramones record was a Tom Waits cover. Where's a good place to start with his catalog?

I started with Rain Dogs in 1985 which worked for me. It's kooky and accessible. Then work backwards through Blue Valentines, Small Change and Nighthawks at the Diner to get the measure of the man and then you're in good shape to journey with him into his 'stranger' post-85 stuff. Good to spread the love.
