Had my first dentist appointment since I was about 12 OR 13, and boy, do I wish I went sooner. I'm embarrassed to admit how much I've neglected my health in this regard, but I have pretty strong teeth, and I had only one filling which fell out a few months ago when I was eating sweets (at first, I thought I'd found a bit of metal in them). Being lazy, it was Christmas by the time I rang to get an appointment, by which time I was too late and had to wait 'til the New Year to be seen. My gums had started hurting pretty bad, so I spent the festive season with coping with discomfort and the odd bout of really awful pain. Anyway, at the dentist yesterday, I got a bit of a shock-after doing a quick examination, he concluded that if I hadn't got such good teeth, I'd be wearing dentures by now! He told me I was lucky I hadn't developed a full-blown absess over Christmas, and would need root canal work-as it turned out, it started it there and then. He bored in pretty deep, and had to clean out a load of infected muck. He put in a temporary filling until the next appointment, and I'll need two more root canal sessions (I've had problems with the other side of my gum, which is developing an infection too). I'm really glad to be getting it done, but I have to say, it was pretty scary getting this done on my first viist in the best part of twenty years! The moral of the story is look after year teeth!

It always shocks me how little regard Aussies and Brits seem to have for their teeth. I was flossing when I was in Europe and a guy asked me what I was doing - having never seen floss before. Still, from what I hear, dentists in those countries aren't so hot either. I'm not sure I believe that though.

Good luck with the dental work, haven't had a root canal but it sounds painful.

I am glad to hear that you're going to be ok even though this seems like a major pain in the butt. Hope all your pain goes away soon! :) Hang in there, it will be worth it in the long run.

I *hope* it wasn't a pain in the butt. That would be an indicator of a confused dentist.

Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?

Your root canal lasted hours long, Kath?! I was about half an hour, although as I said I need a couple more sessions! I'm glad FB&TC helped you through it!! Thanks for the concern, folks!

Almost 3 hours, long enough to hear the Malmo gig and most of I forget which DITS boot.

I'm glad your pearly whites are getting a shine, Carl.

i pulled one of my own teeth once. for real. it was ababy tooth that never fell out and they built up a porcelain tooth around it and then when i was about 23 it got all wiggly and i got a little cocaine and numbed my gums and yanked the tooth with a pair of pliers that looked liked this...

...except not as shiny ;)

You so tough, shiner! That's even more macho than me pulling out stiches off my face recently. I had a mole removed and the doctor said the stiches would dissolve on their own. They didn't and the doctor wanted me to wait a week before he would remove them. That was ridiculously long to wait. So I put Shortie to bed, stood in front of the mirror and yanked those puppies out. It hurt like a mofo but I felt so butch. Carl, this is the best thread ever.

Don't fear the floss, it will minimize the time you spend in a dentists chair. Unless your oral genetics suck, in that case then, it must suck to be you

Thanks jimmy. He didn't prescribe anything, the upper-left gum has improved since he cleaned out all the infected stuff, the upper-right side is a bit sore, have another appointment on Wednesday, but it shouldn't be so bad this time....I hope!!

Those are called vice-grips. They are a wonderful tool. I have three pairs. I had 2 wisdom teeth yanked back in '89, and the tool the dentist used looked like vice grips. I decided to wave anesthesia and opted for nitrous oxide to stay awake for the proceedure. When he was prying them out, it sounded like nails coming out of wood. In the background was Paul McCartney singing Let 'Em In.

There's statistical evidence that suggests a high suicide rate for dentists?! Weird!

Haven't seen any numbers for awhile but for years they alternated with psychiatrists for the highest suicide rate among the professions. My theory is two-fold: most of them wanted to be doctors but dropped out of med school and thus feel shamed, and/or they spend too much time gazing into filthy mouths. Being married to gold-diggers probably doesn't help.

I went today and the entire time the hygienist was talking to me, going on and on. I wouldn't have minded much except for the fact that I had multiple gadgets in my mouth preventing me from responding in any sort of normal matter.

I hate dentists, but dental hygienists can be hot (not sure that's a good thing since they're staring in less than perfectly maintained mouth).
