Owen, the taunting is a no-no because it's yet another indicator of the faiure of U.S. policy -- instead of setting up a government with an interest in democracy, the U.S. put in charge the formerly oppressed. They, in turn, are more interested in revenge and payback than on justice and democracy. When they're all over youtube taunting Hussein, it kinda doesn't look like the US did a good job replacing him with a democracy, you know?

I'm not opposed to the death penalty, but I don't think the justice system in an allegedly civilized country should be based on vengeance. You want to execute someone so there's no chance of their getting back out on the streets, fine. But there wasn't much chance of that happening with Saddam, was there? And I don't think the deterrent argument that conservatives seem to love comes into play here either. It's not like Saddam's execution is likely to prevent future dictators.

So I don't know that it was necessary, but I don't feel bad for the guy either. If anyone deserved execution, he did.

It looks like people hung another leader
I remember shots of saddam shooting his rifle
his palace.
he was'nt grinning when they brought him to the poles though
but he kept his legs.
these guys in masks
their faces not being shown
winning
and me watching
via telephone
without a thumb even to put him down.

VV you're back!

Compelling reading by Scott Turow, of all people, in yesterday's Toronto Globe and Mail book section, of all places, about how this execution makes the ultimate case against state executions.

shit nice quote Danj. Thatīs the way I feel about the variance between guys in parliaments and on podiums wearing faces of hotheaded righteous indignation and the wars they proselytise for which are organised methodically and coldbloodedly.
