| Lou Reed's 1992 concept album about losing a friend to cancer. Profoundly moving if you've ever had a loved one succumb to this horrible disease. One of the most beautiful and depressing albums you're likely to hear. I'm sure it's a very personal album to many people, myself included. Any other fans? If you haven't listened to it, do track it down, I don't think you'll be disappointed. |

Thanks for this thread. Everything about this album makes it a masterpiece (yes, it's an overused word but in this case applicable). I haven't been able to listen to it for the last few months, since a good friend got sick. Just seeing this thread brought tears to my eyes.
This album is respectful, if that's the right word. It elegantly faces straight on the reality of slowly watching someone disappear. It's also a perfect example of how music can heal.

I've never heard M&L, but Berlin is possibly my fave Reed album.
Alright, after Transformer. Maybe!

Magic and Loss is indeed a poignant album but very painfull.
My favorite is Street Hassles and Songs for Drella with Cale... and I know all his bloody albums. I haven't listenned to him for a while. Got overdosed with his work...

It's from a series of movies that came out in late 70s and early 80s generally refered to as Star Wars. |

Every time I listen to this album, more than any other album, it brings up a different and always intense emotion, fittingly a la Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. For instance "I wanted all it, not just some of it" -- used to fill me with rage but last night it was with sorrow. And always the title song beats me down with a stick every time, especially how he sings it -- ironic, yes, that Lou Reed of all artists could actually be said to sing. But he pulls it off here. And the lyrics destroy me - "When you pass through humble, the lights can blind you." I was thinking maybe I should stop listening again.
