Hey I had the I'm From Barcelona album in my top 2, and that's pretty damn twee. There's a song about stamp collecting on there.

I don't know really how something qualifies as twee. If I was deciding for myself, I don't think I'd classify any of my albums as twee, but then what do I know?

By rights I should be listening solely to Danielson and Sufjan Stevens. Maybe Stryper.

The Hold Steady are fantastic - a curious hybrid between Thin Lizzy & Bruce Springsteen. It's one of my albums of the year. Think it's only just been released. |

This year I've only bought The Lemonheads (decent) and Yo La Tengo (fab). My dad has Belle and Sebastian (which I love), Sonic Youth (decent), Lily Allen (decent), and he has Arctic Monkeys.
He thinks it's brilliant, he says it's a classic album, personally I like I Bet You Look Good... and The View From... the rest is pretty poor in my mind

Well I have ordered TV On The Radio, so it should be here in a few days or so. Everyone keeps raving about this Midlake album too, but I have not been blown away by the few songs I have heard. They sound OK mind, probably a grower.
I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place
Well the TV On The Radio album is very good indeed. Wolf Like Me in particular is an amazing song.
And I am happy to report that the Midlake album is excellent. I borrowed it off my mate and have given it quite a few listens. It's a real grower, and well worth the time and perseverence. Everyone kept telling me that Roscoe is amazing, and that it's hard to get past that opening track, but I also love the sequence of Young Bride, followed by Branches, followed by In This Camp. Brilliant. I am gonna order it now. |

I can tell you that they are difficult to categorise, and that their first album was really difficult to get into. I need to give it another try.
Oh and they have done a cover of Mr Grieves, which is apparently excellent.

The only album I have from the NME list is the Flaming Lips one, which has some cool tracks, but isn't really super-great overall. I have four from The Onion's list, though. I guess that makes The Onion cooler than NME, but, well, was there ever any doubt of that?

I never forgave you for referring to the Midlake singer as sounding as if he was high on cough medicine when you listened to a few songs off their first album a couple of years ago. The new album is solid, but I was expecting better based on pre-release hype around here in Texas.

i only bought 2 albums released in 2006, and one of those i didn't buy until 2007. so my list is short, but to the point. 1. Micah P. Hinson - And The Opera Circuit 2. Mogwai - Mr Beast
all i can say is that it was a tight race for top spot.

i'm aghast at such a suggestion.
i actually listen to very little new music these days. i find i can't be bothered to listen to something that i don't know, and therefore might not like. guess i'm just getting old. i'm very entrenched with what i already own, and spend a ridiculously large amount of time on dimeadozen.org downloading live music which i listen to all the damn time.

Wow, what an exceptionally crappy list. Thanks for sharing Denis. Do the writers for the NME even like music?
I agree on Belle and Sebastian - I came to them late, but The Life Pursuit was in my car for several weeks nonstop, and them I bought all their stuff. I had Arab Strap, but I had ignored them pretty much till The Life Pursuit came out.
I liked that one Arctic Monkeys song. And that one Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments song from years ago. I think it was pretty much the same song. But a whole album? I don't think I could take it. I tried The Hold Steady as well, and lasted about 3 songs. Yawn.
The Strokes had a new album? And people bought it?
I liked the Flaming' Lips album off that list, and probably the Beck, if I had heard it.

I am surprised that no one is a Flaming Lips fan. At War With The Mystics is pretty-damn good. There are a few songs on the album that I wish did not exist, but I'd recommend it. Not as good as their Soft Bulletin, but better than Yoshimi Battles The Evil Pink Robots. I agree with Vilainde, most of that shit will be in the bargain bin in a couple years. I was shocked at how good the new Strokes album is. I don't WANT to like the Strokes, but alas, I have succcombed to their catchy sounds |
