I am a Flaming Lips fan. Big time! I just saw them play a show with Ween last year. What an awesome double bill.

i can't stand the flaming lips.
saw them in concert in london in 2003 (i think) and it was truly awful.
i just found them a complete joke.
but my bro-in-law liked 'em, so i stayed at the gig. otherwise i'd have bolted.

truly dire.

all i can say, thank god for polio! brian

Well, you have to take magic mushrooms before the show...it's a whole different thing ;)

PS - I did enjoy them live more back in the 90's when they were just a band rather than a circus show.

the circus aspect was what i disliked the most.
the music was secondary to their stage antics.
i just got the impression that they put on the "circus act" because they knew their music wasn't strong enough to stand up by itself and that made me sad and mad that i'd paid my good money to see a band who were a joke.

i don't remember a single thing about the music that night, and i bet if you even asked someone who liked the show about the music they'd be like "music? what music?"
and thats not why i go to a gig.
compare that to bands such as the pixies (both pre and post reunion) who had zero stage prescence. you went to a show for the music and it was good enuf to hold your attention for the entire length of the gig.

rant over.

That's a good rant. I kind of agree about the "new" Flaming Lips - although they kind of reinvent themselves every couple years, so who knows what's next. After a couple songs of the circus, you're ready for it to be over.

That's why I brought up the mid-90's version. They just played as a band and put on an exceptional show, with one of the best feedback solos I've ever seen. Their lead guitarist (no longer in the band) had a wall of amps on 3 sides of himself and would create the feedback by turning to different amps/combining feedback from two or 3 different amps, etc. It was indescribable and amazing. And it was just 4 musicians on a stage (well, they had christmas lights all over everything, but that's it).

Anyway, this new show they have, it seems they are lip-synching or something, because some of the music sure as hell wasn't coming from the musicians. I thought it was an interesting experience, but it was more like going to Cirque Du Soliel or something than a rock show.

I wouldn't go as far as to say they are musically a joke though. Maybe the show is, but they create some very inventive music and aren't afraid to try new things, like the 4-disc thing or the boombox orchestra. Maybe they are gimmicks, but I guess they just got tired of the 2 guitars, a bass, and drums thing.

I think First Impressions of Earth was pretty bad except for maybe Razorblade, for me their only good album will always be Is This It.

i love the Flaming Lips but their new album doesn't do anything for me. to me Yoshimi had about 5 or 6 "filler" songs, but the rest are brilliant. the new one seems like it's all filler

i guess not every album can be great

Soft Bulletin is top notch though

jamming good with Weird and Gilly
