Last week four boys were in court for the murder of another teen at a party last year. One boy got 4 years and the others are under house arrest (so they basically got grounded for murder and you know the one who got 4 years won't serve even 2). Our city is in an uproar as this teen swarming and murders seem to becoming commonplace. We are outraged at these pitiful sentences. Some go so far as to say that the next time this happens the blood is on the hands of that judge. Well guess what happened this weekend;

EDITORIAL: More than cheese
A bloody weekend in Edmonton that resulted in two stabbing deaths has, not surprisingly, only made residents of this city even angrier than they’ve been when it comes to violent crime and the justice system.
Seventeen-year-old Evan Grykuliak was stabbed to death at his own birthday party celebration early Sunday morning at La Perle community hall in the city’s west end. And a 20-year-old man identified as Dylan Cole McGillis from Saskatchewan was knifed to death on Whyte Avenue near 105 Street in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
The stabbing deaths came the same day that families and friends of two other recent, young, homicide victims, Shane Rolston and Josh Hunt, held a vigil to decry youth crime and speak out against the justice system.
Heaven knows there’s enough for them to be angry about. The outrage against the so-called sentences given to Rolston’s teenage assailants two weeks ago has been well documented. Three teens were effectively sentenced to go home and behave themselves, having been given conditional sentences, while a fourth got a mere four years in jail for his role in beating Shane to death.
Indeed, it was only days after the sentences came down in the Rolston slaying that a University of Alberta criminologist lamented in the Sun that our judges had effectively surrendered the safety of the streets to the underage killers. “The next juvenile homicide that occurs in this country – you can point a finger at the judiciary,” he said.
The impact of that statement isn’t lost on us, particularly after the kind of weekend Edmonton has just endured. People are furious over what they see as young punks getting away with murder. More than one reader has already suggested to us facetiously that when the killer or killers of Grykuliak and McGillis are apprehended, the police slap them on the wrist immediately and send them on their way, in order to save the justice system a lot of time and money.
That kind of cynicism is understandable, but it’s also dangerous. Because it means that people are losing hope in our laws to protect us. And when that happens, people start taking the law into their own hands.
Compare the conditional sentences in the Rolston killing to the story from last Friday out of Prince Albert, Sask., where a 22-year-old woman was sentenced to four months in jail for stealing $59 worth of cheese from a Wal-Mart. Sure, it was a different judge than the one in the Rolston slaying, but the symbolism couldn’t be more clear: a block of cheese has more value in our legal system than a human life.
We are damn sure that the lives of Evan Grykuliak and Dylan Cole McGillis are worth more than cheese.
And we can only pray that when the perpetrators of these evil crimes are caught, tried and convicted, judges will agree.
These sentences are ridiculous. These kids were just babies.

I wonder if the Wal-Mart clerk who caught that female cheese-nabber was a teen...and I wonder if he wanted to kill her.

The judicial system in this country is also fucked up. I had hoped better for others.
You can only imagine how this would add to the rage of a relative or loved one left behind.
 I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place

| Such sensational reporting as that won't do any good. Pointless blaming the judiciary and saying they've 'blood on their hands'; if the finger is to be pointed at anything, then it's the leglislation. |
