Are there any products you refuse to buy, stores you refuse to shop at, restaurants you refuse to go to (etc....) for reasons that have NOTHING whatsoever to do with price/service/selection/quality? I'm talking about ethical and/or political reasons.

I can't think of anything I actively boycott (I have strong preferences, but politics or ethics never enter into it... as far as i know, at least), but I think it's an interesting subject.

So what about you?

I used to boycott French wine in protest at their Pacific nuclear testing. Although I don't feel as strongly about that anymore, I still don't buy French wine as a matter of habit I guess. I've bought champagne, but beyond that, I can't remember buying a bottle of French wine in the last 10-15 years (or whenever that furore started).

I try and not buy Nestle, but they have their fingers in so many pies its difficult sometimes. Plus, I'm often too lazy to check.

I boycott all instant coffee and always buy Fair Trade though...

I boycott Diesel fuel. I managed to squeeze a few drops into my unleaded car once (damn near impossible thing to do; in the top 3 stupid things i've done) but the old motor was having none of it.

I would rather saw off my legs with a rusty spoon than purchase a copy of the Evening Standard and I refuse the free papers that are foisted upon me from all angles as I walk home in the evening.

I won't buy from Asda (owned by Walmart) or Tescos and to the best of my abilities I avoid the other supermarkets.

Newspapers, teevee, radio, fluoridated water, sugarfree food with aspartame, industrial sugar/salt snacks, tinned olives. Too, food in aluminium packaging - it's expensive to use aluminium wrapping and food companies do it for the good reason that if the chemicals in the food are exposed to sunlight the whole thing turns into something out of a John Carpenter movie.
I was at a party this weekend and the morning after found a bowl of nachos that had been out all night but were still crunchy and fresh, folk chowing down on food a few decades ago would have been called toxic waste.

Someone explain Nestle to me. I don't go for their stuff, but a good reason not to can't hurt.

I strictly avoid Wal-Mart.

I don't buy nestle, it's more of a habit now though. I try to avoid buying anything produced by GSK (largely because of the AIDS drugs debacle); they're the most reprehensible company possibly ever. My dad boycotts Shell petrol quite vehemently and I boycott (easily) Iceland (the food store) because of a leaflet they produced a few years ago about GM products that was headed up "Frankenstein Foods". Losers. I avoid any product that has in big letters on it that it's "GM Free" as well.

I boycott a few stores and a few brands, but now I mostly try not to buy things unneccessarily. Spend less. I'm an avid recycler. I love garage sales and value village. With kids and all we all recycle the clothing and furniture etc. and hand it off to the next person and so on.

Seems like I'm on the wagon here.

Starbucks, Walmart, Home Depot, fast-food joints (although I lapse occasionally ad go to Sonic's Drive-In)

Not so much a boycott, but I normally don't buy any fruit/vegetable that is not in season. Avoid artificial sweeteners, MSG and all that.

When I have a choice, I usually buy American-made products. I try to avoid cheap Chinese junky crap like you find at Target. I hear Walmart's the same although I've never been inside one.

I boycott Home Depot because they helped drive my favorite hardware stores out of business. Plus their service and selection sucks.

I have a weird diet so most fast-food is off my menu. But if people want to eat at McDonald's and slowly kill themselves, that's okay with me.

For about nine years I've been boycotting my friend's record store because his business partner is an asshole who took an Eddie & the Hot Rods record that he knew was being held for me.

My dad still bitches that National Lumber went under. Your right about Home Depot, they blow. Every time I go there I seem to be offered assistance by a guy who doesn't know his elbow from his asshole.

As far as boycottin', I stay away from most of the things I feel are using my money to regurgitate more crap into the world, like opening another one of their locations in a strip mall. Thats generally a bad sign. And I was pretty diligent about steering clear of fast food until McDonalds introduced the goddamn McGriddle, I'm sorry but those things are kind of like crack.

Man I barely remember National Lumber. What about HomeClub/HomeBase, Builder's Emporium (a Wickes company!) and all the True Values and Aces? RIP the golden age of hardware stores.

I used to be able to go into Baker's Hardware in Glendale and get any kind of fastener or washer I needed from the dozens of bins. I could buy as many as I wanted -- even only one if I chose -- put it in a little paper bag, write the SKU on it, pay and be on my way. Then Home Depot came along and too many people were lured away by the people-in-orange-vests-who-sell-cheap-hardware-they-know-nothing-about. If you're lucky enough to find the screw you need, you'll have to buy a box of 100. You take them home, use two, and put the rest in your garage to collect dust until you die.

Then they opened a second Home Depot only two miles from the first one, but that store's parking lot is usually empty. They don't seem to be putting a dent into Lowe's or Orchard Supply's business yet. The HD location scout must have been a moron because you can barely see the store from the nearest big street. And to think the fucking City of Burbank probably bent over backwards to get that store there.

Who can top three paragraphs about hardware stores?

I just remember National Lumber's catchy little theme song and their logo with the pilgrim holding the sign. Took many a trip there with pops when I was just a rug rat and he was framing houses.

We still got Ganahl Lumber down here which is a bit of a throw back hardware joint. The owner is cool, knows his shit and only uses the store front marquee for oddball anecdotes like,"He who dies with the most toys is still dead."

I try to boycott movies, TV, and music that involve celebrities who have spoken out harshly against Bush and/or the USA, or have advocated social causes I don’t endorse. In most cases I’m an absolutist about that, not due to any particular discipline on my part so much as out of visceral revulsion. However, I do make exceptions for certain actors and rock musicians. For example, if Frank were to go political I can’t see myself rejecting him or his music. Same for Kim Deal, Tanya Donelly, Kristin Hersh, Liz Phair, and Sam Phillips. I also boycott products and corporations that I think are guilty of using their profits for political ends I don’t endorse. Google comes to mind, with the additional reason that I don’t trust their results for politically-charged searches.

The funny thing is that some people on this forum have spoken out harshly against Bush and/or the USA. Do you boycott reading their posts, Erebus?
