Also locked. I'm looking into ways of strengthening our registration process and have also been manually looking over new users for clues. I've locked/deleted about 50 pending approval, and have my eye on a few more that are probably spam accounts but I can't be 100% sure.

Most of their usernames seem to end with a '55' for some reason.
Or at least two consecutive numbers.

I wish I could just block all people claiming to be from Ivory Coast... seriously, check out the profiles of most of these spammers.
I'm putting an image verification thing at the top of my priority queue.
And yeah, phpBB is really one of the most popular and therefore targetted bbs.

That's interesting, I wonder if it took time to filter through the email system or if it's possible for them to spam from a locked account somehow...

Can we not infect these people with a friendly virus that might politely crash their harddrives?
It woud be cool if you had some kind of system where, for a user to send an email to another forum member, he or she would have to have a certain number of posts. Like 5 posts before you can access "other members." Not sure if that would help or not. |

That would and I was actually just thinking about that when I locked an account. They all have no posts and are from Ivory Coast. Difficult, though.
Still, once I get this podcast out and finish my little move, I will be knee deep in spam-thwarting forum code and it will end this streak. I'm sorry it's taking so long to everyone.

I've had a ton of people (spammers) registering over at our Beggars forums, but I've set an additional authorisation on there - not sure how different this forum is, admin wise to vbulletin, but that was the only extra security feature, other than letting unregistered people have no access to any forums, (so they could actually see more not logged on!) and an additional authorisation from me. Bwhaaha. Power. But most of the time people don't get their notifications, cause they're leaving fake email addresses, so they're stuck in limbo. So they just re-register instead. Tsk.
Oh, and I got one too. So that's why I'm posting here, I don't feel left out right now! I've had one too! Can't remember who though, but I felt special, sent her all my bank information, my address, all my passwords, and posted my chequebook, as it seemed the right thing to do. |
