so i just started reading this while on holidays and loving it! got about 50 pages left. i've read that a handful of people on here think it's crap. i know it's a work of fiction but it really is interesting. i know very little about art so it has totally peaked my interest. i never realized da vinci was such a genious. i really like the anagrams- not sure if this is total bs or if there are actual legit theories on this stuff (the part where they were explaining the mona lisa mystery for eg). reminded me a bit of frank in a way. underlying meanings, really intelligent art, pealing away the layers... i wonder what frank's wife violet thinks of the book as she used to be a curator. there was a museum curator sitting at our table at a wedding last night and she absolutely loved the book. i guess the publicity is great for all the museums but i've been really surprised how much i like the book.

I think its a load of horse shit. And Its not that I look down my nose at it because its intellectual/trendy to do so, Its just that a dog with a fountain pen could have written a better book. Seriously, Dan Brown can barely even construct a sentence, never mind write a novel.

Aside from Dan Brown's style ( trying too hard to be educational, general cornyness ), TDC is very well written.
He takes an interesting idea, builds a well-constructed story around it, and tells the story in a clear, direct way.
The chapters are short ( I read somewhere he said he writes short chapters- some 3 or 4 pages long- because he has a short attention span ). But it isn't just the chapter length that makes it such a quick read; he writes in a way that holds the reader's attention.
There are plenty of writers who could learn a lot from Brown's writing style ( as much as I like him and his non-fiction, Tom Wolfe's last two novels had whole chapters that were practically unreadable ).
For an example of truely bad writing, try "Left Behind".
I agree with benji- I liked "Demons & Angels" much more than TDC. |

Enjoyed all of Brown's books, though to varying degrees. I thought there was a nice weaving of fact, fiction, and myth and this is why, at least for me, the books sell. I don't care if the dialogue seems bad. I don't go to action movies expecting moving/tear-jerking scenes. I don't go to comedy expecting serious social commentary. And so forth. If it happens to include some of those things, great, but you have to look at this book as what it is first, and then realize that all the art/historical/mythological tie-ins are gravy and what make an average-to-poor book in the mystery/thriller line into something great.

not to go too far off topic, but what's with tom hanks' hair in the movie adaptation? so off-putting.
look, it's hip to be snooty about "lowbrow" books, to trash what "the common people" are reading. what matters is your own subjective experience. if you liked a book, good for you and who cares if there's a backlash?

I thought the first 100 pages of The Da Vinci Code were genius -- lots of clever stuff in there. And then it turned into a Hollywood-style chase scene for the rest of the book. I read another of Brown's books, and finally realized he's not as serious as he tried to make those first 100 pages of DVC. Once you realize it's just page-turning pulp, his stuff is quite entertaining.

For pure entertainment value, DVC was excellent. I can't blame Dan Brown for coming up with such a brilliant idea, researching the material well enough to find an angle, presenting it in a way that the public believes it is fact, and writing in a cinematic way that keeps everyone hooked. Furthermore, the material left so many questions that many people have done their own research to find out about the truth. I can't remember seeing as many follow up books, lectures, church groups devoted to discussing this book.

I think the book is mediocre at best (much like Harry Potter) and when is it ever a good thing that the masses aspire to mediocrity? Read the Da Vinci code, listen to coldplay, eat vanilla ice-cream. Boring and depressing. |

well said!
the 2nd half of the book is typical hollywood type stuff but the first half really raises some great questions. sure the ideas have probably been raised before but it really ties together quit nicely and makes for an entertaining read. i went to a catholic church growing up and pretty much only got one side of the story. that whole female suppression thing in the catholic church always bothered me. why can't females become priests. why can't priests get married. ya, they're married to the church...seems unnatural to live a life of celibacy. but to each his own.

I hated every single bit of that book. Hell, I hated the FIRST line of the book (but that's due to the appalling translation which only made things worse). But I don't mind if people like it. Mrs Denis enjoyed it quite a lot. I'm much more stunned by the fact that some people didn't like Shaun of the Dead. Now that is something hard to believe.

i'll never understand how people think she's hot (sorry whore).. every time i see a picture of her it brings back unpleasant memories of the ultra-overrated AMELIE and all those annoying, cutsey moments when she looks directly at the camera.

Yeah, Tom Hank's hair looks bad in the movie ( I haven't seen it ), but for a while he had it longer and it looked much better-
there was something I saw on TV, it might've been a tribute to Ron Howard or something and he played guitar & sang with Steve Martin, and they did a good job as I remember and his hair looked kinda cool.
