And the tagline: "They wanted meat so they ate the Flower Children."

Haven't we had it already? The poor response to this film surprised me (all French film critics loved it though). It's one of the most clever genre movies I've seen, along with Night of the Living Dead and Starship Troopers.

Yeah we have but I like arguing zombie. The plot was good, there were some brilliant scenes but the zombie evolution doesn't stand up at all. The 'head' zombie would never have been able to figure everything out like he did and so quickly. I think the film would have been prefect without it and with it it makes me raise an eyebrow.
Night of the living dead, Denis you'll be as depressed as I am to hear about the remake Night of the Living Dead 3D. It has nothing to do with Romero and the trailer looks kind of... budget. Sigh.
OK, I take it back, the guitar wolf thing sounds excellent.
The Dawn of the Dead I have is 139 minutes long. I think I know what scenes have been cut from the edited version, they're not integral to the plot.
[edit] Yeesh! It gets worse : Day of the Dead is also being remade and that was the crap one.

Just learned today that Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez are filming some sort of double-feature horror flick, comprised of 2 separate 75 mins movies that will be shown together. Rodriguez is doing a zombie movie while Tarantino is gonna do a slasher movie starring Kurt "Snake Plissken" Russell as the bad guy. There's a debate on the imdb forums on whether RR is gonna go with walking or running zombies. I didn't like Sin City but this sounds interesting.

I have a hard time argueing since I haven't seen Dawn and Day and I don't know how zombies act in those ones, but the point of Land is that the zombies finally begin to counter the tricks that the living use to keep them harmless. A river? They cross it. Fireworks? They got bored of them, they don't care. It's not like they suddenly use weaponry or complex tools, this is no Battlefield Earth. And I agree that they could've done without the airhammer, that was silly. But they're not doing much more than that. They have a leader who's barely more evolved and they do a revolution. At least that's how I see it. Maybe you were disappointed because some rules of the zombie movies were bended a bit, I don't know, I haven't seen that many, but from a socially engaged point of view it was great. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, but Mena Suvari's in it. I agree that it looks crappy though.
Is there a scene in Day where some guy gets his arm bitten and they cut it off with a knife or something? I remember that scene but don't know which movie it's from.

I saw this one again last year (I'd gone to see it when it first came out), and I was surprised at how bad the acting was, and how ugly the photography was. Looked much more exciting when I was 17.
There's a scene in which the mean military guy is litterally torn apart by the zombies. I've seen behind-the-scenes footage of this one and it's hilarious. They stuffed his fake torso with every piece of crap they could find, mostly garbage from butcheries, and it stank to the high heavens. The actor nearly passed out.
I swear if you look closely at that point, you can see one of the zombies pull an entire chicken out of the guy's stomach.

I don't think I've ev er been able to sit all the way through that film without getting bored or falling asleep. Keeping in mind how I feel about this sort of film it's a bad bad sign.
Denis, the big bugger used a machine gun! The river stuff fine, the fireworks fine, the grunty "communication"? nonsense...

I really like Day Of The Dead, actually. It has a creepy, oppressive atmosphere, great gore effects and some good performances.
Oh yeah, did you know Joe Pilato, who plays Capt. Rhodes, appeared as a Dean Martin lookalike at Jack Rabbit Slim's in Pulp Fiction?

Agreed on the Haunting and the Others; you might also be frightened by the Innocents with I think Deb(o)ra(h) Kerr. THAT one creeps me out.
If you liked Freaks and the Unknown, try combining the German dwarf WITH Lon Chaney; you end up with the Unholy Three. I think there's even a both silent and talking versions with both actors. I love Lon Chaney as an old lady. Reminds me finally of Lionel Barrymore as an old lady in Devil Doll, complete with the lovely Maureen O'Sullivan (Mia Farrow's momma!). It's kind of a Sweeney Todd story too--instead of razors, it's miniature people as weapons.

this may be the most creeped out I've been by any movie. I'm still not completely sure why I like it.

I finally got round to watching Army Of Darkness last night after borrowing it literally about a year ago. I like it. I don't think I've ever seen a film which is so utterly nonsensical yet still ace.
We watched both endings - the S-Mart one is definitely better, and for the record that was the studio's cut. The Director's Cut (i.e. Sam Raimi's originally intended ending) is the apocalyptic ending, which didn't really sit right with the rest of the film for me. As described to me last night, it's the Planet Of The Apes ending.

I watched The Unknown in a version with no music at all, and that last scene with the horses seemed to last for ages, I could barely keep watching. It was weird to watch a 1927 movie and fear for the goriest things to happen.
Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check them out.
This weekend I watched The Hills Have Eyes, '77 version by Wes Craven. It was not gory actually. It wasn't scary either. In fact it wasn't very good. Sending the dog to kill the bad guys was lame. You don't kill bad guys with a dog, you kill them with an axe or a chainsaw!

I watched Dawn of the Dead this weekend - at last. It was pertty good. I must say I wasn't absolutely blown away by it, but I did enjoy it. Guess I have to give it time to sink in. I think Night is better though.

Never heard of Reeker. Hostel looked a bit like Saw and I didn't feel like watching Saw, so I guess I'll pass on Hostel too. Cabin Fever looks great though (same director as Hostel), is it any good?
Last movie I watched was Tromeo & Juliet, which you could call gory but in an extremely cheap and silly way. The scene where the priest smashes the bad guy's head by jumping on it was hilarating. Rubber masks + red paint + lots of tits + Lemmy from the House of Mötörhead + awful acting + Sgt Kabukiman + body piercing = great movie. I have to find Toxic Avenger now.

A mate of mine got Saw II, we were debating what to watch out of his recent DVD purchases the other night, but we ended up watching WWE Survivor Series 2003 instead-probably more violent than most horror movies!! :D
Yeah, Cabin Fever was alright, not mindblowing stuff. Vilainde, Toxic Avenger is fucking hilarious! Lloyd Kaufman, Troma movies co-founder, is really funny...I remember he was on Wogan years back, and he came on with Toxic Avenger figures that turned out to be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures with Toxic Avenger stickers on their faces!

Denis, you wouldn't like Hostel, there's torture scenes and it's all pretty lame.
Toxic avenger is however truly awesome in a fabulously cheesy way, it's always in the sale sections in the shops here. |

I'd recommend old Italian stuff as well. I don't remember a lot of titles but Suspiria and House of 7 Windows (or something, not even sure it's been translated into English) spring to mind.
The first Japanese Ring (Ringu?) is very creepy. The sequels are some of the worst films I've ever seen though.
And Evil Dead is a must (especially the second one imo). |
