Anyone else extremely anal about hearing stuff about movie's you've not yet seen? I don't mean the blatant "Joe-Bob dies at the end, and then Francine realizes it was all a dream" stuff. Almost everyone would agree that such obvious spoilers are annoying. I'm talking about virtually anything one might say, whether or not they realize it, that could affect an otherwise prejudice-free viewing experience.

For instance, I don't read any reviews; I even try to ignore trailers and crap on TV. I assume that the film director doesn't necessarily decide how a trailer is set up, so I also assume it's more governed by a marketing team, the intent of which is to draw people to the movie.

So someone might say something as superficially benign as "I'm not giving anything away, but let's just say you will be totally shocked by a turn of events toward the end." To me, despite not telling anything about the particular movie, it still taints my potential experience.

There's nothing I would not give to somehow erase my memory of movies like the following, so I could experience them with virgin eyes:

****WARNING! SPOILER-like stuff below (according to my anal standards)****

Highlight it to see it betterer.

S----P----O----I----L----E----R

Psycho especially. I never saw it without knowing basically what was gonna happen. I will never be able to experience the initial shock (if any) of the climax.

Wicker Man, kind of. I was set up from moment one for a huge shocker ending, so I sat on the edge of my seat, wondering when it would come. Due to this heightened sense of expectation, the "shock" never did come. It made my first viewing of it a disappointment, despite it being a pretty cool flick.

DaVinci Code: Well, duh. But it would've been nice to see it before any exposure to many of its basic "arguments." I have never read the book or anything.

Kramer vs. Kramer. Just kidding.

Soylent Green. Didn't know what was coming, but was told to expect it, so I did--for the whole movie.

Other ones I can't think of right now.

S----P----O----I----L----E----R

****SPOILER ALL GONE****

Anybody else as uptight as me about trying to see films in a vacuum like this?

Sometimes. I went through a long while avoiding any possible information about Star Wars Ep 2 but found I wasn't as excited about the movie coming out as I was for Phantom Menace.

Almost all my judgement on a movie's merit comes from the trailer and the name. If they can't string together a decent preview, I hold no hope for the movie. If the writer can't put together a clever couple words for the movie title, I hold no hope for the writing. More on judging good movies from bad here:

Never See A Bad Movie Again

So for the most part, while I avoid the more obvious plot spoilers (and I think it's possible to spot from a movie's trailer when they give too much away or use all the good jokes) I need the trailers to give me a sense of wanting to see or miss it.

Maybe if they used more stuff filmed just for the trailer or from the cutting room floor, your dilemma would be naught.

Subtopic: I hate trailers that give away too much. Case in point, CASTAWAY - in the fucking trailer, you see his wife running though the airport - presumably, because he is coming home. Thanks, why am i going to both to watch?

Dean, your forumla got me thinkin'. Maybe I'll come up with my own for my blog. I agree with some of your suggestions, but I think some of them look like they're 20/20 hindsight-based. There are sooo many exceptions to those rules; it makes me wonder if any rules can really pass muster.

Also, how come we pronounce Colonel like "kernel"?

Frills. Like the new Wicker Man trailer flick contains some potentially telling clips.

i can't imagine how shocking PSYCHO must have been for audiences back then.

as for trailers, i try to take them with a grain of salt. they're made by marketing people who care only about selling the movie, even if it means completely misrepresenting what it is. there are good trailers for shitty films, and great films that have had horrible trailers. (the trailer for ADAPTATION was horrible)..

that said, it is hard not to form an opinion about a movie based on the trailer. and i do like watching trailers

i think it's ok for people to talk about old films (like PSYCHO).. unless someone say " i haven't seen that, don't tell me". but who hasn't seen PSYCHO?

I hate it when you're at a movie, you've avoided the spoilers so you can enjoy the film more, and then the person you're with leans in and goes "Oh, i heard he gets shot near the end" or something.

I haven't seen PSYCHO.

I suffer with being too smart for my own good. Spoiler or no, doesn't matter how clever the plot twist, I usually see it coming. It's a blessing and a curse.

I've suffered with that though. There was a Hundred Greatest Films kind of programme on, and they all but gave away the ending of the Usual Suspects. I admit I'm fairly dense and don't usually guess the endings, but this one has a fairly spectacular twist, and I'd love to be able to erase that film from my memory and go back and watch it afresh.

Same for Sixth Sense, that was spoilt by a review at the time. How rude is that?

Last night I saw Nacho Libre, and the f***ing husband behind us kept translating the little Spanish snippets for his lady. The worst was when they'd say something like "luchador" and he'd say, "That means fighter." Ah, now I completely understand the movie. Thanks, ass.

I kept waiting for him to explain that Ramses was an Egyptian Pharaoh, and that nachos are cheese-covered tortilla chips. Oh yeah, and since he was translating for her, anything she didn't quite get, she would ask "what does that mean," even when it had been spoken in clear English.

Yeah sister, anything you don't understand in life is due to your inability to speak Spanish.

Oh man there's Spanish in the film? There's a little gem I'll never discover for myself...

hehe

On the blog that three of us forumites have started our first theme is about songs in films. It's actually really hard to talk about films without discussing the plot especially in relation to the music that's used. I've probably thrown in loads of spoilers.

I'm a cold hearted girl though in many respects.

When i was watching The Village i got a theory very early into the movie about what was happening (I won't say anything for those who haven't seen it). For the rest of the movie it kept repeating in my head until i said to myself "If this is what’s going to happen, then it'll suck because i ruined it for myself unknowingly".
It turns out i was spot on about the "big plot twist" near the end.

Really? I haven't seen it but that's pretty bad. And yeah, if there is a twist, don't pat yourself on the back about it during the trailer. Let the audience be shocked.

Does anyone else think it would be interesting to see trailers that used footage not in the movies that also doesn't give things away. Or would it be like false advertising?

I didn't see the trailer. It might have saved almost two hours of viewing for me.

Did anyone see the trailer for Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind done in the style of an ad for the brain erasing stuff. No footage from the movie was used in it. And it was good.

Trailers, as stated earlier, are marketing ploys to sell the product by any means possible. They rarely represent the work itself. It's interesting to note that trailers today actually reveal much less than trailers of the past 60+ years. I watch a lot of classic movies (40's-70's) on dvd and I always watch the trailer after I've watched the movie because they basically tell the whole story from start to finish in 3 minutes...and, sometimes unashamedly so, the entire denoument is presented in the preview!

The best way to NOT have a movie spoiled for you is just to not watch trailers, or read any blog or article which may potentially ruin it for you. You really are responsible for your own actions. If you investigate, you will come up with a result. So just go see a film after it's opened, and pay no mind to trailers. It's that easy.

Oh, and Janet Leigh who is/was basically touted as the 'star' of PSYCHO dies not even halfway into it. Ooops...I meant to put ***SPOLILER*** before I stated that.

Have you seen the trailer for Transformers? Apparently the intention is not to reveal any of the actual robots at all until the film is released. Good luck to 'em.

trailers sometimes use footage not in the film. usually trailers are made before the film is done, and sometimes stuff in the trailers doesn't end up in the film. and sometimes they'll create something that's just for marketing...

Movies and weed. I wish I liked them more than I do. While I've had some great experiences with them both, I just can't seem to make either an important part of my life. I know this sounds stupid, but at times I feel like I'm really missing out on something great.

Same with Metallica. Never could quite get it. I've tried and tried.

just curious, did you see it with The Crying Game?
I was told about the twist before seeing it (people are just too keen on sharing their excitement and the whole surprise experience), but until I saw it I had truly believed that was an actress they used to play that character.
