I think you're being charitable. My guess that way when the "N word" was being coined educated white people thought Africans weren't even the same species as themselves.
You're probably correct.

I have a feeling that there are relatively more people from Pakistan in the UK and Europe at large, but I never had any idea that Paki was considered a derogatory term.
My not racist step dad would always use the term in/outside of the company of his Pakistani(?) acquaintences in Saudi Arabia. I grew up assuming that was The word that meant "someone from Pakistan."
I just want to say here and now, in Thrasher Magazine, that I did not kill Mr. Stitcha. |

It's used to describe anyone Asian, it's turned into a nasty insult. Brown skin - must be a paki. It's ridiculous, it's not even older folks who have the generation gap to blame. My friend who was born in Wales but her parents are from India has had it shouted at her. Not in my hearing I might add or I would have beaten them to within an inch of their worthless lives. |

I remember when my friend came strolling into class one time quietly singing, "There was a man from Pakistan-" and the teacher just interrupted him right there and said, "If you're going to be racist you can get out."
He told me later that he didn't even know what he was going to sing for the second line. |

Two of my friends were hanging out in the park once. One has Pakistani parents, but he was born and raised in Ireland. He's a typical Irish fella and see's himself that way, as an Irishman (He even learned Gaelic in school, which is a pain in the balls people). The other guy is a lanky white dude. Someone passing by yelled in their direction "Packie". The guy with Pakistani parents got pissed of and started to hurl abuse back at him. A short shouting match began between the two and after a while the passer-by walked away, As he did so he turned around to the two and said "See ya around man"
Turns out he was a friend of the lanky dude, who's nickname was Packie Bonner, the lanky Irish goalie.
True story.

Sounds like it was the teacher who was prejudiced, in that it was he/she that "prejudged".

Have you ever been in a situation, usually with older people, who still use words such as Paki, and coloureds? It's very uncomfortable.

I know a girl who's married to a Pakistani guy, and she refers to people as Pakis. She always follows it by saying, it's ok, I can say that because I'm banging one.
She's a classy bird.

Lol. That's nuts. I eman my best friend is Pakistani and as a joke between the both of us I often call him Paki, but to think that would entitle me to call Asians Pakis is ludacris. Does the husband with what she does?

I think Mo actively encourages it, to be honest. I think usually its fairly clearcut if you're using this in a derogatory way, and to assume everyone'll jump to offence is not always true.

Well, yes obviously, you can tell from the tone and context in which it was said if its humurous or actually being used in a derogatory way. But still, I would feel very uncomfortable around this woman if she constantly used the word Paki.
