AMC has been playing this a lot lately so I thought I'd ask:
Did you like it?

What did you think of Sophia Coppola as Mary? I didn't see the movie till this year, but I remember at the time a lot of people said how bad of an actress she was, and how it would've been so much better if Winona could've done it.

After seeing it a couple times I have to say, I think she's perfect in that role, she's very natural, has a lot of charm, and she's very pretty, and not in a usual bland way.

And as much as I like Winona, I can't see her being as believable in that part, plus I think her celebrity would have been too distracting-

Andy Garcia fit in well with the characters from the first two movies, even George Hamilton did, but I must've missed a couple scenes, because I don't see why Bridget Fonda's character has so many scenes in the movie when none of it really advances the plot ( yeah, there's the scene with the two intruders, but even then she didn't have to be there.)

Not that I don't like Bridget Fonda- she was great in Point Of No Return- I just kept thinking that she was there because she was one of the hot new actresses at the time.

Anyway, I liked G III as much as the first two, maybe even a little better because it's got an Elvis Costello song in it.

It is quite terrible in my opinion. If you really thing Sophia Coppola is a good actress, watch her last scene in the film again. The movie is boring, too long, and really, to me, doesn't fit in with the other films at all.

It's pathetic compared with the first two...it's kind of a good movie, some intriguing stuff, but too much cornball soap opera shit.

It's not as bad as a lot of people say. It's been vilified for so long now that I think a lot of folks just jump to that conclusion. Andy Garcia is pretty good in it and the dude that keeps saying,"Hey Joey, Up your ass!" always cracks me up. It's just that the first two were such classics and it's hard to sustain that sort of quality and focus especially when Coppola waited so long between II and III

There's a couple of good ideas in the movie, but the screenplay was terrible. I've heard that the production was raced, and they didn't really take the time necessary to make a proper Godfather film. I still think the movie had potential to be good, but it just never happen becuase of studio interference.

"This Pope has powerful enemies...we may not be in time to save him."

"I killed my father's son! I killed my mother's son!"

"Joey...Zasa!"

"...dad."

"It never ends."

"Give the order! Kill him, Michael!"

This movie is like a serious version of Dick Tracy. Case in point, the helicopter hit. It marked the beginning of Pacino-out-of-his-mind-acting technique. It made me dislike Andy Garcia and his eye-rolling technique. George Hamilton? That was hilarious. And Michael's hair...I guess a cool spikey crew-cut depicts old-age? Only other guy I can think of with that is George Gobel. And something was edited very poorly when Sophia is shot, because Garcia shoots the guy, is a good distance away from all involved, and yet in one shot his shirt is slathered with blood. The final montage is nice though, and seeing Michael die, drop the orange and fall to the dog's licks is sad. Three things flash through my mind now (in hindsight)and make me chuckle when I see this scene however...Pacino in the final shot looks like how he does in Two Bits, and the final shot of DeNiro in Casino reminds me of the same said shot. Something about actors being made to look old is hilarious. And it's never convincing. Godfather III is to gangsters as Frank Drebin is to cops.

That reminds me of the Curb your Enthusiasm where Martin Scorsese is directing Larry as a mobster in some movie he's supposedly directing. Hilarious shit.

The other night on ( I think it's called IMDB oe something like that, some movie website ) I was reading all this trivia about the movie they had posted, and I don't know how many of what they had was true, but I got the idea that a) most of the actors were only worried about how much money they'd be making and b) the moviemakers didn't really care what the story was gonna be.

I love that scene "Hey Joey, Up your ass!"

The movie does have some bad dialogue, like when Vincent tells Mike about the hitman that's after him, Mike says something and then... "Then not even the Pope is safe."

That's why Robert Duvall said no. Not enough money. And actually, I think Wynona was supposed to play the part that went to Bridget Fonda...not Sophia. Anyway, I remember this movie was supoosed to come out Thanksgiving Day of '90, but days before was pushed back to Christmas for some further editing. Marketing materials increased in value, of course.

Oops. Sorry. My bad. Wynona was replaced by Sophia, not Bridget. I was going by memory, not fact. Usually I research before spouting something to make sure...ewwww! I goofed.
