Am I the only one who thinks that In The Time of My Ruin could be a Pixies song? Imagine Kim rocking that bass line and Joey hitting those guitar fills. I thought this when I first heard it, and then when I heard the Catholics demo of Selkie Bride, I realized how much who is playing affects the "feel" of a song. Selkie Bride suddenly became a rocker, all because of the feel of the bass and drum work. In the Time of My Ruin could easily by a Pixies song. Provided of course that Dave could pull off that amazing stuttered kick/double kick drum fill (what is that exactly, Mr. Tiven?). I love this song.

As soon as we had cut this song, I said to Charles that it provided the linkage between his solo work and his Pixies material. And it HAD to be on the album. Glad some of you agree.

The drum brilliance is Jim Keltner, the best at his best. Hard to top. But I could absolutely see the Pixies playing this, but it's highly unlikely that we'll hear them playing any music other than what's in their repertoire already.

bye,
Jon Tiven

I can hear them playing it's just not your moment, my life's in storage, and basically every song on earlier FB albums. Then again I have a good imagination

Do you know what specifically he is doing at the part I mentioned? I don't have the album with me or I'd give you the particular time it happens, but it sounds like a double kick fill, or else one extremely quick foot. It could be a floot tom, but it sounds like the bass drum to me. Do you know which one I'm talking about?

As I recall, it's just one foot, but when you cut 27 songs you can't remember every detail. Sorry I can't be more definitive.

What I do remember very well is Keltner plays live percussion as he drums, quite a feat if you've only got two hands and two feet. He may have a ghost appendage helping out.

Thanx JT for the props to Mr.Keltner. He must be an awesome drummer to record. Next to him, it would be great if Frank could work with "Mean Willie "One Take" Green" in the future. I just some him last night in Montreux with the Neville Brothers and he is ON!------------Great work on FMRM!!!!!

this is probably my favorite song on the album right now. it really is a great tune. and i love the lyrics.

kind of a dumb question, but does or did violet work at a museum?

In the time of my ruin/At the museum I met a curator/She was so nice, I thought I would date her/I was a hawk and I just flew in/In the time of my ruin/I did not know you would be created/Now every day I am elated/Cuz you never know what is brewing/Some pain is good/Sometimes its good to be blind/Some pain feels good/That’s the pain that’s just the right kind/You didn’t know I was a shoe-in/And you didn’t know it was my hour/And you didn’t know that I had the power/In the time of my ruin/They’re caving in the roof/It is falling all around/The floor is going, too/Soon I will be falling on down

Until the lyrics were posted here by Frank a few months back, I always thought it was:

The beginning of this song reminds me of that old song Last Kiss. Iforgot who sings it. Anyone else notice this?

I also wondered about this drum take. Except I think it sounds nervous and kinda like the guy was getting in over his head a few times. To discover it was performed by a quality musician, and that it is thought of as a superb effort really leaves me feeling stranded.

I'm not a drummer. And I'm not looking for an argument. But if you guys who think its a great take could explain why you think so, in greater detail, I'd love to hear it.

Well... I play drums a bit and the compliment would be "It's beautifull but I can't really tell what he's playing". Just like the best music: it makes you forget that it is actually music.
It's catchy but yet very sophisticated without excluding anybody from the listen.

The drum sound on this track is the best on the entire recording. This struck me on first listen. But, I probably would have asked for another, or different take for the final cut. The fills seem a little *hides head* sloppy to me. Especially the intro fill.

That said, I'm interested in what steps were taken to make the sound of the drums in this song stand above the others. They sound more atmospheric, or live. There's an obvious difference that cannot be attributed to the performer, but more to the production.

Great song. One of Frank's best extended outtros, too.

Hmmm. That drum sound may be worth dying for. Tough decision. Let me think it over, and I'll have my people get in touch with your people.

At very least you agree the drums got a different tweak. I'm satisfied with that admission.

p.s. aren't you supposed to be at work right now?

If you're talking about the same "intro" fill I'm thinking of, then I agree with you that it sounds kind of "sloppy", in that it seems to "fade" a bit toward the end, losing volume and tempo. Upon repeated listens, I really like how it sounds and have to assume that it was intentional. I can't imagine a proffessional (sessional?) drummer missing such an easy fill, nor allowing it be in the final mix (unless this was a happy accident that they liked). As for the rest of the drumming, I love it. The simple, driving beat in the chorus makes me want to shake my butt (but not too hard), and the fill I asked Jon about still makes me shake my head. One foot! Unreal. Perhaps for a seasoned drummer, that's no big deal, but for a novice that seems like a bit of Yngwie Malmsteen-eque theatrics. In a good way.

The drum SOUND is so good that it's really hard to criticize the performance. There are alot of other cool things happening in this song as well. It's a decent drum take, but just not special to me.

Special to me is Highway To Lowdown. That song's drums are so in the pocket I threw up in my mouth a little. Sounds like Vincent. Could be Keltner. Who is the sick person who played the drums on HTL?

I was just chating with a friend about how dumb most rock ingeniors mix the drums nowadays: Snare? High frequencies! Low drum? Low frequencies! And make it beat hard like a stadium sono!
In FMRM the toms and snare drums seem to beat low AND high, and about the low drum, you FEEL it but not really HEAR it.
You get the groove along with the other instruments, it's much more musical.
The most stupid thing when you hear some young rock band on the radio is that they generally try to copy the stooges musically, but actually their drum sound is much closer to motley crue or depeche mode than any stooges recording! They would NEVER put some hands clap like "No Fun".

"Highway To Lowdown" is Anton Fig on drums, we left his name off the album by mistake. He's a monster....seen nightly on Letterman.

Anton Fig. Tough to beat having him in on the project. Why, I believe that's him playing drums on Ace Frehley's first coked out solo record, too. The one where they all did a solo record while still in Kiss ('78?). Ace's was the best by far.

It's cool to know he played on Frank's new record. Thanks Tiven.

Rumors says he played on Kiss Unmasked as well. And Frehley's Comets first one. Paul's was the best by far.
