Keltner is a drumming great without a doubt. When I saw Mr. Keltner's name on the song credits I was eager to hear which track was his. I thought this the least likely song after hearing it though, which proves I know absolutely nothing.
In anycase, I also felt the "sloppiness" but thanks to Mr. Tiven's explanation things make a bit more sense. Having to play the tambourine simultaneous with the drums isn't an easy feat. In terms of the parts that sound odd to me: a missed(?) vs. less voluminous high-hat at 0:07 on 3& sounds hesitant and on the first bar after the drums "kick in" there is an inconsistency in the high-hat with an apparent patternless switching between open and closed accents. Most noticeable for me however, is the fill on the first bar of the verse after the chorus at 1:49. It begins at the beginning of the bar in the verse instead of the end of the previous section which is the traditional spot for fills. This could be really cool, but it's followed up by another weird HH/tambourine pattern for the remainder of the bar until it gets back into the groove making it sound less intentional and makes one wonder if it isn't the fault of the 3 bar phrasing.
Again, this all could just be because of the percussion issue, but I prefer to think of this as an intentional thematic undertaking on Mr. Keltner's part. The song is about the time of one's ruin, and a messy sounding pattern actually fits it. This is most likely drums working at another level. I'm sure if Mr. Keltner wanted another take, he would have gotten another take.
Plus that fill at 1:27 is friggin awesome. |

I think the reason for this song sounding like the link between pixies and new Frank solo is because this song has a very 'Catholics' feel to it. Especially the tremelo on the guitar ala dave/rich (can't remember who used it more), big one-hit chords ala EDF, slide guitar ala dave/rich. Did Rich and or DaveP play on this track? I wouldn't be surprised at all.. Thanks in advance,

In my humble opinion, theonecontender's Catholic attribution is not particularly on the mark.
The musicians on it are Carol Kaye (bass), Duane Jarvis (guitar), P.F. Sloan (piano, Jim Keltner (drums) and of course Dave (pedal steel). Draw your own conclusions, I just think these particular musicians knew how to execute a Frank Black song perfectly (same personnel on "Don't Cry That Way").

Speaking of Anton Fig, wasn't that Anton who played drums with the Pixies when they played Trompe Le Monde on Letterman back in the early '90s, while David Lovering stood off to the side and shook some maracas?

Check out the discography on Anton's web site www.antonfig.com. He's a drum giant.
