i guess this will date myself, and i'm not really arguing that it's a bad thing, but something i've noticed about going to concerts now, versus going to concerts when i was a wee lad is that the crowds seem so docile these days.
going to concerts when i was in high school (or younger) i remember it being a much more sketchy affair. there were just way more hard-core scary characters, more drug use, and, usually, at almost every show at least one fight broke out. i remember always being afraid of getting knifed or whatever..
when i go to concerts now the crowds are markedly more clean-cut and timid; Moby look-alikes, Death Cab For Cutie fans.. etc..
not a judgement call. it's probably a good thing that there isn't much violence at shows. but that did, admittedly, add another level of excitement to going to a show. i kind of miss the gang violence and psychotic people on acid going into convulsions
any other oldies have the same sense? or am i just off here?

I think you're right (although I don't go to many concerts anymore). Maybe it's because concerts tickets are so fucking expensive that punks can't afford them?

I been feeling the same way, almost nostalgic for getting thumped in the nuts and having beer poured on my head at a White Zombie show. Though I did see a Mike Watt show in a small village last year where crowdsurfing wasn´t voluntary, there were guys walking around, picking people up and heaving them onto a throng. Perhaps you got to leave the city before you find people not so whipped by club behaviour-codes.

I guess I can't share in the nostalgia, not having "the old days" to look back on. But to throw in my two cents, I still get a rush of violence induced fear going to a lot of shows. I guess though, the fear often generates from other sources. A lot of the shows I go to in New York are in Brooklyn, which has some really sketchy neighborhoods. Hearing gunshots walking to The Hook or some apartment in Bushwick always makes a show more exciting.
The shows themselves are usually tame, although it all depends on the performer. When seeing the Pixies last year, when a circle pit broke out, I didn't take part, but I did observe many disgruntled looks from patrons who were bumped and pushed. I feel like people aren't willing to tolerate that sort of behavior at more mainstream shows. Going to punk shows in basements and shitty bars is a different story though. I still find myself occassionally coming home with bruises and cuts after some of these shows.

Yeup, the crowd has gone softcore. Punk here in Los Angeles since 1984, I've seen a lions share of violence at shows. I dig not having to be caught up in the frenzy anymore though now. I still go to punk shows now (depending if they have a good bill or have the dickies) and the atmosphere is pretty much a carbon copy of yester years. Indie geek shows are about as lively as a bucket of shit though. |

i saw the Dickies and Fear last year in Long Beach.. and while there were a few fights and people who looked like they just got out of county jail, it still felt somehow more wholesome and safe. i never felt like i would get knifed in the back, which was a disappointment.

yeup, was at that show too plus the "germs" dickies/channel three show this year. alot of kids but i had a good time being an old fogey. I should have taken out a loan though to cover my drinks at the vault 350 in long beach. |

I just remember getting crushed and falling over with a huge wave of people gigs, and having people land on top of you. Before The Pixies last year, I can't remember being to a proper gig in a long while.

I definietly enjoy getting thrown all over the place at gigs, which was why I was bitching about the Radiohead gig being a bit crappy, nobody moved.
As for the old days of which you speak...I dunno, Im only 19.

yeah i am not sure if its me that's changed, or because I moved to a different more mellow place, or that i am not checking out a bunch of punk rock/hard core bands. but it seems like there are less pits these days. i do remember a day before the security check. i also remember being in the pit for almost every show. (now I stand back). Sir mentioned the bumps and bruises and back in the day i was always brused up from the pit. so right now things seem more tame but if you think about it, the population in general is much older now so maybe we don't have it in us anymore. |

I remember FB saying in a COR-era NME interview that his big rock 'n roll concert experience moment came when a big guy landed on him at a Black Flag show!!

a good point is made here and one that was driven home during the pixies reunion tours. a very different experience, physically, than pixies (and other) shows in the 80s. less physically perilous.

I think that for the most part this is true, but i for one don't mind. There are usually pockets of intensity if that's what i'm in the mood for. Or, if i'm in my normal mood, i just hang out where i won't get stepped on/beer spilled on me.

I've had the wish that fans at some of the shows I've been to in the last few years would get into the music at least...not necessarily form a violent mosh pit, but at least jump up and down and have fun. Let the music take them over. The Pixies show was pretty fun on the floor area, and I got to crush up close and people were pretty delirius, but many other shows have had that "I'm too cool to get into the music at all" feel.
A futureheads show last year in Dallas was like that: sold out, packed room, yet even the youngsters in the crowd at the very front weren't getting into it too much. Maybe the lack of ability to buy alcohol for them at the bar (18 & up show I guess it was) affects that.

All the scary people like shitty bands now. Like the last Woodstock when they burnt the place down and raped women, all to the sound of the Chili Peppers, a show that also included the very popular Limp Bizquick and Kid Rock.

If I'm going to get physically injured, I'd like it to happen while doing something more exciting than attending a rock concert. At least then I can brag about how it happened. |

Except that violent crime rates in the US have been declining since the early 90s.

fair enough my experience with crime has risen dramatically due to a location change and part of my left wing libertarian attitude dictates me to go doomsday cynic perhaps the perception for others has changed perhaps the incidents caught up with us? perhaps the insurance no longer allows for any fooling around? so many variables it could be interesting question

I got a bloody lip at the Liars show I attended tonight.
To be fair though, it wasn't as much anyone else's fault as mine. I was pressed up against the stage, and when they started playing Let's Not Wrestly Mt. Heart Attack, I started dancing all over the place, and I smashed my face accidentally into a monitor.
I also think I might be temporarily deaf. Once again though, not my fault.

I been too enough Slayer shows and been tossed like a rag doll and trampled upon. It was fun and I miss it sometimes but if I see a pit at a show nowadays I mainly think about how I could get injured and just find a comfy spot by the bar. It does seem that shows were a lot more unpredictable back when but maybe becuase I've been to loads of'em by now, they're a little more eh.... predictable.

After a metal show, your ears are numb, your body feels like it's been put through a ringer, and you feel all sweaty and dirty. And the scent of sweat and cheap shampoo lingers in your nostrils.

The most violent show I ever went to was, surprisingly, the Squirrel Nut Zippers. There were more fights that broke out during that show than I had seen before, going to Tool, the Deftones, etc.
