It's Official: Futurama Returns!

Fry and the gang will be back for at least 13 new episodes on Comedy Central.

by Eric Goldman

June 23, 2006 - Futurama fans can finally celebrate, as a long rumored revival of the series is going forward. For several months now there had been word that the show -- which ran on FOX from 1999 to 2003 -- could be coming back, particularly after the return of animated favorite Family Guy and a last minute renewal/return of King of the Hill seemed to prove there was an increasing confidence in the overall fandom and long term prospects for series of this type. Earlier this year, Futurama voice actor Billy West actually stated on his website that the show's return was a done deal, only to recant the statement. However, he did continue to say something was in the works, whether it be more episodes or direct-to-DVD movies.

Now we have official and definite word the show itself will be returning, with 13 brand new episodes set to air on Comedy Central. Like Family Guy, Futurama proved its popularity and earned its return thanks both to DVDs and also to repeats on Cartoon Network. Apparently there had been some negotiations needed in order to secure the return of the cast, but that is now resolved and all of the major voice over talent, including West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio will return to tell new tales about Fry, a pizza delivery boy who ends up 1000 years in the future.

The deal to produce new episodes of Futurama goes in tandem with Comedy Central's acquisition of the 72 previously produced Futurama episodes, after Cartoon Network's current deal ends. Fans shouldn't exactly hold their breath in anticipation, since Comedy Central will not be airing either the old or any of the new episodes until 2008.

Once in a while I'll watch some "Futurama" when I'm flipping around- I'm always surprised by how much I don't like it. "The Simpsons" is good, though.

They should bring back "The Golden Girls". It's huge on Lifetime.

I used to be obsessed with Futurama. It was always the best cartoon out of the Family Guy/South Park/latter-day Simpsons generation.

The Simpsons was good. It's getting kind of crappy now. It's alright, though. Futurama is cool, but it'll never be as good as the Simpsons.

I am so psyched for this.

I feel like Futurama doesn't get the credit it deserves. In an era when I find new episodes of Family Guy and the Simpsons unwatchable, Futurama serves as a beacon of hope for the future of lonely Saturday nights sitting around watching cartoons.

If you took The Simpsons and broke it in two, you'd end up with Futurama and Family Guy. Family Guy encompasses the more slapstick, silly side of the funny spectrum, while Futurama the more slow but thoughtful side. I can't compare any of the three shows as a result, but I am definitely excited for more Futurama. It took me a looooong time to understand/appreciate what was remotely funny about it (I used to hate it) but I'm ready this time. I swear!

Hey CoF: Bring back your Futurama sig--or choose a new one?

"It took me a looooong time to understand/appreciate what was remotely funny about it . . ."

So both Frye and Bender were absent during that entire period of time? Yeah well, I had the same experience. The only not terribly funny characters are Leela and what's her name.

Maybe a Dr. Zoidberg quote for your sig:
"Now Fry, it's been a few years since medical school so remind me; disembowling in your species—fatal or non-fatal?"
or

I love it when he says "robuht" instead of "robot". It's just, funny!

Zoidberg: I'll have a look but I warn you, I'm an expert on humans, not robuhts.
Fry: Er, I'm not Bender, I'm Fry.
Zoidberg: Really? I thought you were the robuht.
Fry: Nope, human.
Zoidberg: Alright, alright, spare me your life story.

YES!

Robuht is to Robot as Los An-Gul-Less is to Los Angeles.

Reminds me of a fine SNL ad with Sam Waterson (I think) for Robot Insurance--targeted to the elderly. It's uproarious.

This is awesome I've been going through the Futurama DVDs over and over lately and really been hoping for something new, I had heard about the idea that they were going to do a movie but I think new episodes is probably the best way to go. I wonder where they'll go with Fry and Leela though, they seemed to be getting close to getting together in the last season. While I love Zoidberg I think the Professor has some great lines "I'll be in the anger dome!", etc... And I think the best quote might just be the line "You watched it! You can't unwatch it!" from Anthology of Interest II.

I hope they either get them together or just completely drop the whole Fry-chasing-Leela thing. It's been going on for 4 seasons now..!

More classic (mis)quotes that are probably actually quite unfunny when taken out of their original context:

Leela: "Except for the word "blurn", everything you just said there was complete gibberish."

Fry: "I did do the nasty in the pasty!"

Professor: So far it only translates into an obsolete language that no one can understand."
Amy: "Hello."
Translating machine: "Bonjour."

Leela: "It's the best extinct animal you'll have ever tasted."
Amy: "I dunno...I've had cow."

Bender: "Hey, sexy mama...Wanna kill all humans?"

Bender: "Poor guy. Maybe he'll feel better if he has a drink."
*Pumps water from a keg vigorously. No water comes out*
Bender: Crummy keg! It's completely...Oh, you're a robot."
Keg: "Don't stop."

Bender (whilst his dismembered arm steals some money): "Look at me everybody! Hey...It's Bender! Bender's dancing! Look at me dance! Okay, show's over."

Lucy Liu robot: "Oh, Fry, I love you more than the moon, the stars, the...POETIC IMAGE #36 NOT FOUND."

Leela: "It was a mistake."
Zapp: "A sexy mistake"

Zapp: Well, if it's a lesson in love, watch out. I suffer from a very sexy learning disability. What do I call it, Kif?
Kif: Ugh..."Sexlexia."

Zoidberg: "If you get cold, you can join Hermes and me in my tent for some "just friends" spooning."

More good quotes:

"Thompson's Teeth: The only teeth strong enough to eat other teeth."

Linda: At least those windmills will keep them cool.
Morbo: Windmills do not work that way!

One problem with a Zoidberg quote is that he can make just about anything funny; so it's hard to judge the out-of-context lines on their own merit.

I almost forgot about Morbo! Another classic Futurama character

Linda: "All in all, this is one day Mittens the kitten won't soon forget."
Morbo: "Kittens give Morbo gas. In lighter news, the city of New New York is doomed. Blame rests with known human Professor Hubert Farnsworth and his tiny, inferior brain."

I've never really watched Futurama but I just read the quotes from imdb.com and some were great:

Bender: "Wow, your kid is great. How hard did you say you had to hit him?"
Mother: "Fairly hard."

Kif Kroker: "Mix these mixed nuts. I see two almonds touching."

Fry: "I'm never gonna get used to the 31st century. Caffineated bacon? Baconated grapefruit? ADMIRAL Crunch?"

A bit of chat about Futurama and The Simpsons:

http://tv.ign.com/articles/721/721378p1.html

Comic-Con 2006: The Simpsons
Matt Groening and others talk about the next two seasons and the upcoming movie.
by Dan Iverson

July 27, 2006 - On Saturday morning the San Diego Convention Center packed one of their largest halls as writers, producers, and directors of The Simpsons came to speak on whatever was on the fans minds. The nine member panel consisted of: Matt Groening (creator and executive producer), James L. Brooks (executive producer), Matt Selman (executive producer), David Mirkin (executive producer), Al Jean (executive producer and head writer), Don Payne (co-executive producer), Bill Odenkirk (co-executive producer), Mike Scully (producer) and David Silverman (director). The hot topics for the panel were The Simpsons motion picture and the return of Futurama; but still the odds and ends questions about the making of the show to how they view other programs would be the inquiries most asked.

Starting off the panel was a video - featuring clips from The Simpsons. Most of these clips were old, and although that would normally bore an audience, it instead brought the audience closer as they quoted a couple of the lines in unison. When the lights came back on we had our panel introduced to us - with Groening getting the loudest response from the crowd. Instead of any filler content, the panel opened up for questions from the audience immediately.

One of the first questions asked in the session was about Futurama. When asked what is going on with the production of the show, Groening simply stated that "Futurama Lives!" Seeming genuinely grateful for the popularity and interest of the show, Groening thanked everybody and said that next year at Comic-Con they would bring clips from the new Comedy Central episodes. Also mentioned - Groening claimed that the reason that David X. Cohen didn't make it for the panel was because he was off writing the scripts to the episodes right now. Later in the panel, everybody would attribute the return of Futurama to the successful return of Family Guy.

Other than the film and Futurama, the fans wanted to know as much about the show and the people who make it as possible. From questions about how they pick guest stars, to what they think about Family Guy; the panelists didn't hold back when answering the questions at hand. In what may have been a gag - when asked where Springfield actually is in America, the creators just joked around and ended the question by stating Illinois. Also mentioned was whether they felt as if they could get away with anything from the censors with all their popularity and prestige - the producers simply stated that as long as they weren't putting boobs and butts on the show, the network stayed happy. In a question posed to the creators, a fan asked whether there were any plans to age the characters at all. The response was staggering as the crowd booed the fan for even asking the question, while the panel explained that they found creatively that they could do more if they just left them at the same age - allowing for visions of the future, which they could change from episode to episode. A hot topic of conversation was the feelings of the panelists to Family Guy and South Park. In an answer that the fans weren't expecting everybody on the panel claimed that they like both of the shows - especially South Park. They claimed that Family Guy's popularity has helped bring Futurama back, and South Park they all claimed was one of the better shows on television - making special mention of the episode "Trapped in the Closet." Another topic that fans were curious about, was whether the original shorts that aired on "The Tracey Ullman Show" will ever make their way to DVD? After Groening implied that the only device worth showing them on was a cell phone, he stated that they are trying to get the clips, but he doesn't know when they will finally have rights to them.

The question that seemed to make a lot of fans curious was how they get their guest stars, and who they plan on having this upcoming season? In answer to how they get certain stars, the panel stated that most celebrities will come to them either as fans themselves, or as parents whose children are fans. In response to which musical guest stars were their favorite, the panel took a democratic stand and claimed that they were all great… until the audience goaded them into giving answers. Some of the names mentioned were the Beatles, the Baha Men (which got a good laugh), Keith Richards (which was mentioned as one of the strangest audio recordings in The Simpsons history), and Matt Groening's favorite: The Ramones. As for the coming season, the names given for which musicians would guest star were: The White Stripes and Metallica. The other guest stars that they mentioned would show up in Springfield were: Dr. Phil, Natalie Portman (or rather Princess Amidala), and Kiefer Sutherland.

Finally the question that was on everybody's mind - what is happening with the movie? In a humorous reply, they mentioned that the story is going to have to get reworked as it was the exact plot of "Snakes on a Plane." Other than that humorous bit, nothing more was said about the final storyline of the film. But just as the fans thought that there would be no more - two clips were shown, to a roaring response from the audience. You can read more about the movie and the clips at IGN Filmforce. After the clips were shown, the crowd left happy, as questions were answered, clips were shown, and Futurama's return was confirmed to already be in production.

I like King Of The Hill. Not as funny as The Simpsons (used to be, at least), but still good. Has anyone else seen the Winklebottom episode? One of the best ones.

My take on the news: I realized that some stuff these news channels are telling me, aren't really new. They should call it the olds. If I want to see how New York is doing 5 years after 9/11, I'll watch the olds. Or the mildlynewsbutstillextremelyborings.

I've seen the Winklebottom episode, but I think my favorite episode is where Bobby and his friend try to be bums to buy the pre ripped jeans or whatever... If nothing else but for the quote from Hank "I hate those pants more than life itself" which kind of made me think he loathed his existence as much as I do from time to time. I don't expect the show to be gag-a-minute but it just bugs me for some reason although I can't help but be drawn in by it from time to time. Outside a few voices and the general style it's hard to believe that this show is by the same guy that did Beavis and Butthead way back when. On another note has anyone else been watching Lucky Louie with Louis CK, the woman that does Bobby Hills voice plays his wife on that show, and I'm loving that show.

Comic-Con News: Futurama Returns

Written by Michael Dayspring
Tuesday, 31 July 2007
Good News Everyone!! Bender's Back Baby!! Oh yeah the rest of the gang too.

While they don't know exactly how the show is going to return; Station, schedule, or what have you...they do know that they have 4 Feature Length Movies either on deck or in the works. The episodes will be sold on DVD and broken up into episodes for broadcast on Comedy Central..NO that's not a typo..they are leaving Cartoon Network Behind and jumping over to Comedy Central Jan 1st, 2008.

Better news still everyone! is that when they say everyone is back they mean EVERYONE is back; All the writers, voice actors, producers and directors.

More cool news everyone! The show will now be in widescreen and high def baby!! Oh yeah and now that they are on cable you can expect a little more naughty-ness from the crew of the planet express.

The first adventure for the crew...Benders Big Score (On DVD Holiday 2007 Nov 27th). They showed a brand spankin new 5 min trailer...

Trailer:
“Bad News Everyone...We've been Cancelled!? The moronic Exes at the Box Network A who cancelled the show have been fired, beaten up, killed, ground into powder and replaced by all new morons.”

The Secret of time travel found on Fry's ass sets the gang off on an adventure through time featuring all the old fav characters and a huge space battle..and also the hypno-toad.

The panel did a live reading in character of the RETURN OF FUTURAMA comic box (handed out before the panel...jealous?) Like watching a live taping of the show, a little gift for the fans all around. HI-LARIOUS

Every single one of the 72 episodes prior were a slice of fried gold....bring on the next 772.

*bump*
