I'm pretty much over "Don't Cry That Way." It's catchy, and it jumped out at me right away, but it's already fading. Like the pretty girl who ends up not having much to say about anything. But "Wanderlust" is emerging as a really fantastic song. "When the wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeels hit the road ..." It's songs like this that end up being my friends for years. |

I totally agree! Having been at the show, I really loved My Terrible Ways. It got stuck in my head for weeks. The album version underwhelmed me in comparison. It's too bad.
Right now, I'm really digging "Fast Man". Don't know why. I like to sing along to songs, and that one is fun to sing along to. |

Yeah, that one [Wanderlust] is a lot of fun and has the mark of an instant classic. Not an FB classic per se, but a traditional one. It is remniscent to me, for some reason, of Jet Black River. Feels like it could've been a Catholics song, very easily.

I haven't had time to listen to the discs all that much, but the short drive to work in the morning is usually an excuse for a sing along, so I'm in a happy rut at the moment just listening to my favourite few so far. "It's just not your moment" is in my head and I can't get it out. It can stay there for a little while.
In The Time Of My Ruin gets regular airplay. The intro reminds me of 'Handyman', only slightly but enough for me to like alot. |

so many to choose from...... pardon my english! i rarely use that language almost every song from cd2 i guess recently i fell in love with Don't Cry That Way it's easy to "pass" this song when hearing for the first times.. it's sounds just like another country-esque song, but once you noticed how suspiciously sweet the melody is you )i mean "i"( try to sing it and find out that it quite tricky and the words - truley enigmatic - but in the fashion frank know so well to do - without loosing the beauty of the phrases and the magic of the musicality of every word! first i thought it's about psychoanalitic dreams... ("analyzer dream", "up-stream" etc') but then it seems like a memory of less orginized phase in his life which combined misery and happines at the same time some kind of nostlagy to times that were "bad in a good way" that's why the music is quite cheerfull and sweet although the song itself deals with death (of the trout that swim up the sream to lay her eggs and die there) and meaning of life in general, i think frank is becoming more and more "morrissey".. i mean, the irony and sadness and the world of lonley un-succesfull human beings - is much in focus

Now, tonight I go to play "My Terrible Ways" to my wife, who was at the Cafe Du Nord show with me, to show much it sucked compared to the live show, and it didn't suck to me any more.
I like it now. Huh. The album is most definitely a grower.
I still liked My Terrible Ways when it wasn't sung in the falsetto-esque manner, but it works for the arrangement. Maybe he can cover himself on a B-side with just his acoustic (Frank, do you read these things?). That would be great! |

Question - Does anyone know what songs Bobby Bare Jr backed on vocals? I was a little surprised how little the backup voices came through, even though Bare Jr's website plugged the album and Bobby's participation. http://www.bobbybarejr.com/
My favorite songs so far: Kiss my ring - lyrics In my time of ruin - great beat, lyrics Dog Sleep...
Like all FB albums, His music and sound creation are art that you need to savor over time to really appreciate. Kinda like a new pair of shoes, not always a perfect fit the first time out. |

My Top Five would probably be:
Wanderlust Dog Sleep I'm Not Dead (I'm In Pittsburgh) Golden Shore Fare Thee Well
"Don't Cry That Way" is also a cool song. I particularly like the steel guitar parts.
"If you doze much longer, then life turns to dreaming. If you doze much longer, then dreams turn to nightmares." |

Kiss My Ring is starting to grow on me. I thought it was a throwaway from the Honeycomb sessions, but the lyrics are pretty funny.
Fare Thee Well - one of my favorites, but I prefer the Honeycomb bootleg version for some reason.
Golden Shore is great.
If Your Poison gets you...I played it for an impartial audience in the car as background music, and I could see them tapping their hands on their legs. Kind of funny, actually, since it's not in 4/4 for the verse, and not being musicians you can see them subliminally trying to figure out why they aren't on beat. |

Poison, Barley Corn, Dogsleep, End of the Summer (hated it first), Fastman, Raiderman, Time of my ruin, Holland Town, Sad old World, Don't cry that way, Highway to Lowdown.
Still think that maybe a more catholic-vibe would have helped, and still think it should have been a killer single album.

Agree with above comment on KISS MY RING, I was dismissive of it on initial hearings, but has definitely grown. I like virtually all of Bill G's picks, plus SE7EN DAYS & WHERE THE WIND IS GOING, I like a lot also.

I keep changing my mind about my fave song. Now it's "Fitzgerald." Has he said in an interview or anything whether Fitzy is a real dude? It's hard to tell from the song whether it's just some made-up stuff or it's (auto)biographical. |

It was strange! I was going through songs on the new album, picking a favorite . . i was listening to the song "do nt cry that way " . Then upon this topic, etc. . ..
I was playing tracks like milliseconds into the song . It sounds good from the start for me .

The way Frank sings 'Holland Town' coupled with the chord changes makes this one of my faves from the Nashville era.
The man's got the gift. Even if he wrote a 30 track record with 29 weak songs, the last one he'd pull out the arsenal would be the greatest song in the world. Tribute. I love him for being so much better than the rest.
Baby, Frank's art! |

Re: Don't Cry That Way - anyone familiar with Paul Kelly [Australian singer/songwriter] would detect a similar style in the songwriting style for this tune. A little different to the usual.

I've listened to it a zillion times already and for me, I think "Where The Wind Is Going" is the song I like the best. I guess that makes me an oddity around here.
The end of "Ruin" is excellent. The whole double-CD is great. Was worth the hype and waiting.

"Where The Wind" in THE standout track. Nothing wrong with liking the best song on the record.
"Holland Town" damn near made me cry the last time I listened to it- trying to sing along and blubbering isn't too cool.

I love "Where the Wind is Going." I got hooked by that little he-ey part about 2:15 into the song. Those little things like that are what gets me every time. It's kind of like when he's really into the moment and then the listener feels it too.
I caught Fitzy and his sax sneaking up on me yesterday. |

I've loved Wanderlust since day one. When I hear that piano, I can picture an old dude with a derby-style hat in an dusty saloon bouncing his hands all over the keys. For me, that song is up there with the likes of St. Francis, End of Miles and San Antonio, TX. -FranknWeezer |

- 4 frogs (very good):
Fast Man Dirty Old Town Seven Days Dog Sleep Kiss My Ring It's Just Not Your Moment Holland Town Don't Cry That Way
- 3 frogs (good):
Johnny Barleycorn Wanderlust I'm Not Dead (I'm in Pittsburgh) Down To You Where the Wind Is Going

I have totally come around on My Terrible Ways. I always enjoyed the music, but I found the singing harder to swallow. I still think he's reaching (and not getting to) a few notes, particularly "and wait for the day", but I really love this song. It's sad and beautiful and is always stuck in my head. The fact that I like so much now despite thinking it was nearly unlistenable at first just makes it more amazing.

Considering how often people's favorite songs on this record change, would it be worthwhile to sticky this topic? |
