It doesn't take me long to pick a favorite song or two on any new Frank Black album. So far, the one that's risen to the top and made me press the "back" button on my iPod the most is "Don't Cry That Way." What I can't understand is that nobody has mentioned it yet as being one of their favorites. Frank's voice and the melody on this one make me swoon. By tomorrow, though, I might have a new favorite. I expect to wake up with one of the tunes in my head, maybe "It's Just Not Your Moment" or "Johnny Barleycorn," which are both catchy. I'm curious what songs have risen to the very top for other folks and which ones you're waking up humming.

Hard to pick a favorite now. But I do know which one is my least fave, that award goes to My Terrible Ways. Awesome song on the Cafe du Nord boot, terribly played on the record.
My current faves after only a couple of listenings would be It's Just Not Your Moment, Raider Man and Dirty Old Town.

Just to start with,

Elijah
It's Just Not Your Moment
Johnny Barleycorn
Holland Town
You Can't Crucify Yourself
Raiderman

And I certainly agree with what's been said about My Terrible Ways. Far more powerful when solo. It'll be nice to hear how these songs sound when Frank hits the road. But I don't think anything will make me like Sad Old World. Ever. Haha.

It's a lovely record though, plenty that you notice on repeated listening.

The Real El Rey has grown on me a lot. The 4 tracks from the LA session are the definite highlights of the record.

ooohh... Don't Cry That Way is a good one!
Also, I'm surprised but I like Dirty Old Town. I hate country music but they seem to be having so much fun that I can't help but like it.

Dirty Old Town would be alright if it was just Frank singing, but that other vocal, ugh.

I feel Seven Days could've been a great soul song, just like Sad old World ("Hello... No, I mean... you...". Gets me everytime!) but the arrangements aren't great (sorry Lyle!). The horns are underused and the drums are boring.

10 favorite songs (with a little "analysis" (probably too high-fallutin' a term for the little commentary here):

1. "Holland Town" Simple, sweet, short melodic sound, and I like the way FB's voice is recorded on this one: direct and up front in the mix, relating a little story in which you have to fill a lot of the blanks.
2. "Fitzgerald" Ditto. "I like Indian, the one in ballpoint ink." One of my favorite lines on the album, both because of delivery and imagery. That little detail fills in a lot of space.
3. "If Your Poison Gets You" I like the contrast between the sinister verse and the inordinately sunny chorus. Good stuff.
4. "Don't Cry That Way" Love FB's voice on here. Sounds like it could have been tucked somewhere on Teenager of the Year. A very distant relative to "Havalina"
5. "In the Time of My Ruin" Great when that doubled guitar line kicks in. This one is just a solid rocker. "At the museum I met a curator/She was so nice I thought I would date her." LOL
6. "Down to You" The singing sounds a little...adenoidal? in this one. As if this might have been recorded very late in the game during those all-night sessions. I like the ragged vocals and the organs in the background. Sounds like a lot of mid-nineties, early 2000s Dylan to me.
7. "End of Summer" I can't think of a song that FB's done that is so unlike the rest of his catalogue. Weird.
8. "John Barleycorn" This has probably been discussed enough that you get it.
9. "Seven Days" Poignant and sad. The melancholy instrumentation in the beginning snags me in.
10. "Elijah" I like this one, though it sounds like something from SSMVGD; can't put my finger on it.

In short, lots to enjoy on this album. I don't know what kind of place it's going to occupy years down the road, but who cares? Only time will tell. I tend to prefer the rockier FB stuff, but I can dig low-key too. Some good summer listening. Looking forward to what he's going to do with EDF next year.

My top 5 for the moment are:

1. Seven Days
2. Wanderlust
3. If Your Poison Gets you
4. Fast Man
5. Dog Sleep

This is inevitably going to change but these are the songs that first stand out.

'Kiss my ring' and 'Where the wind is going' I kind of ruined, from playing them too many times since the Honeycomb demos leaked. I obviously really like them, I just can't compare them to the other "new" songs.
'The real El Rey' is also one of my favourites, which surprises me a bit. At first it seemed to ruin a great sequence ('My terrible ways', 'Fitzy', 'Elijah' and 'It's just not your moment'), but it's slowly becoming a favourite. That "I'm gonna learn me to sing" part grabs me everytime.
But my absolute favourite has to be 'Sad old world'. Frank's singing, the whole arrangement of the song, how the chords and bass are incredibly smooth and just take their time... very classy song. I guess it's a tip of the hat to those classic 50' ballads, but it sounds like a classic in it's own wright.

I enjoy enough of the album that it'd be easier to list my dislikes. Probably would've made a tighter, more consistent album without some songs...I'm not fond of I'm Not Dead (I'm In Pittsburgh) or that version of Dirty Old Town. They're a little ham-handed; not like Frank adapting country/western to his style, but rather Frank trying to adapt to it. I guess that's been the point of the last two albums, but still...

I think the second disc is about as good as it gets (with the exception of Holland Town). Interesting to compare versions of the tracks left off of Honeycomb. Kind of miss hearing the little organ solo in Kiss My Ring. Overall, Honeycomb left me a little disappointed...Fastman/Raiderman is an amazing return to form. Can't wait for the next one.

I have listened to FMRM at least 70 times. Honestly, I love all the songs. Today when I was listening, I kept trying to find some favorites to post here. At the end of the day, I came to the conculsion that all the songs on it are good and each one is as good as the next. It's a solid piece of work (each song and in whole) and the songs flow well into each other. I have never fast fwd through any of the songs.

I'm suprised how much I love this album, given how much I hated Honeycomb. I thought Frank had lost it. I still wish he'd dump the session musicians and go back to rough-and-ready-live-to-2-track, though. Oh well, here are my favourites:

1: In the Time of My Ruin - Best Frank song in AGES. One of the best outros I've ever heard.
2: Where the Wind is Going. It's official; the catchiest chorus of all time.
3: The Real El Ray - The worst song of all time upon the first listen. A cast-iron classic upon the tenth.

Also...Fitzgerald, Elijah, Fast Man, Wanderlust, Johnny...Ahhh, ALL OF THEM!

And the worst...
1: Down to You - Holy fuck, what the hell is this, Frank? Stop trying to croon and play me some songs, Goddamnit!
2: Dirty Old Town - Not too bad, just get that old man off the microphone. It's a cover song, and Frank's hardly singing it - so why put it on the album?

I'm still pretty unfamiliar with much of the album, though, so it's still early days.

I'm really liking this album. Wasn't thrilled the first time through, but after another couple listens to most of the songs (haven't had a chance to really dive into it) am slowly but surely falling in love. I liked Honeycomb when it first came out, but looking back on it, the album does not seem to have much depth. This one seems to have much more of it (excepting the leftovers from Honeycomb which to me sound out of place...) The songs are still Americana in feel but seem to be far more structurally advanced. Favorites so far:

My Time of Ruin
Fast Man
Sad Old World
Don't Cry That Way
You Can't Crucify Yourself
Fitzgerald

On first listen I liked about half the songs on disc one but was really wondering just what the fuck Frank was onto. Disc two came as my revelation, and then when I thereupon immediately re-cued disc one, it came as an entirely new beast. Half a dozen listens later, I now think FMRM will come to be seen as a latter day counterpart to TOTY. It’s difficult to name faves at so early a date, what with each fresh listen delivering new wonder, but out of the gate I love more than half the album, especially Johnny Barleycorn, Raider Man, Dog Sleep, In the Time of My Ruin, and Don’t Cry That Way.
