Marvel likely has some ownership rights to the 90s Captain America and Fantastic Four movies. If they're really bad movies, Marvel might prefer that they don't come out on DVD.
Reading comics in the 80s, I remember how Stan Lee, in his Marvel Age column, was constantly hyping all us geeks on Marvel's deal with New World Pictures and how now all of these Marvel super hero movies were being developed. I had visions of going to the theater to see Spider-Man in some cool big budget movie in the next few years. Little did I know then that New World was, for the most part, a low-budget b-movie factory, owned by Roger Corman, and any Marvel movie that came out of it would likely be a rubber mask, straight-to-video thing.
Ultimately, I think the only thing comics fans ended up seeing from the Marvel/New World partnership were comic book adaptations of New World movies. There was a House 2 comic, a Sledgehammer (the TV show) comic, and maybe a few other things. |

Chris Nolan on The Dark Knight Source: Melissa Greenwood August 30, 2006
ComingSoon.net sat in on an edit bay session with director Chris Nolan for The Prestige (lots more on that next week!) and the helmer talked a bit about both his blockbuster hit Batman Begins and its upcoming sequel, The Dark Knight.
Nolan said he was very surprised by Batman Begins' success, "for the simple reason that I felt we had really poured our hearts out in making a good film and that on our own terms we had succeeded. I never really expected to satisfy critics and Batman fans and regular audiences equally. I mean I thought maybe we'd get two points on the drawing board if you like, but the fact that all three seemed to respond well, that was a big surprise to me. I mean it felt like you were going to lose one aspect or someone… I think we were very fortunate in that regard, it's very gratifying."
Talking about the follow-up, in which Heath Ledger will play The Joker opposite Christian Bale, he mentioned that they're changing things up. "I think what people responded to well about 'Batman Begins' is how different it was from their expectations so I think we would be foolish to not recognize that and to [try to replicate that now predictable blueprint]. I think we'll be doing something very different for the sequel. I certainly wouldn't have any interest in trying to repeat experience or the formula we've made, because particularly being the origin story, it's a very unique thing, a very singular experience. My interest would sort of be to move on from that and to do something quite different."
The Dark Knight is coming in June of 2008. The Prestige, starring Hugh Jackman, Bale, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis, Piper Perabo and David Bowie, opens October 20.

Sarah Connor Chronicles are on With a director in place, everything is set for the Terminator spin-off 29 Aug 2006 4:27pm
Warner Bros TV and Fox Broadcasting are finally in a place to crack on with the eagerly anticipated Terminator TV spin-off, The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
In the chair to helm the pilot is seasoned TV lenser David Nutter, who has worked on a pile of top shows, from 21 Jump Street to The West Wing and The Sopranos.
The show will follow the trail of Sarah Connor from where T2: Judgement Day left off, with the battle-weary mum on the run.
Fox committed to shoot a pilot last year and will work alongside producers of the big screen robo-war flicks, Andrew Vajna and Mario Kassar for C2 Pictures. With a shoot planned for early next year, casting is set to kick off straight away.

Nolan Dispels Dark Knight Rumors Director comments on casting and story elements. by Chris Carle
August 30, 2006 - At an edit bay visit for The Prestige, the upcoming thriller set in the world of turn-of-the-century magicians, we got a chance to ask Batman Begins helmer Christopher Nolan some questions about his upcoming Dark Knight project.
Speculation continues to circle about the sequel to Batman Begins. Heath Ledger has signed on to play The Joker, but other casting and story elements have been constantly in question, and various Hollywood personalities have been rumored to be involved. However, the air was cleared temporarily by Nolan.
The director had one comment for all of the questions asked, which included queries about Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin, Ryan Phillipe's involvement in the project and Sean Penn's inclusion as Harvey Dent. The director simply said, "No truth to any such rumors. Always interesting ideas."
Nolan will begin work on The Dark Knight when The Prestige wraps. The film, which stars Batman actor Christian Bale, in addition to Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johansson, is in its final stages of sound editing and will arrive in theaters October 20th. Stay tuned for to IGN for more details on both films, an in-depth look at the sound editing visit and an insightful Christopher Nolan interview, coming soon.

Most people seem to think that too many villians and not enough Batman is what sent the follow ups to Keaton's "Batman" south. Personally, I liked Batman Returns; Keaton was good if one dimensional, Burton had a great asthetic and the villians were played very well. It was a bit too cartoony for me, but over all it was enjoyable. So I guess I hope Dark Night sticks with just the Joker, and I'm anxious to see how they continue in the new "realistic" vain with him. Should be very interesting, they did a great job with the first one.

There's a fairly cool Spider-man 3 poster free with this months Total Film. It's a shiny, metallic, plastic, rendition of the moody black teaser poster.
This will be my last post in the forum for a while. mmsee YA!

THE FOUNTAIN
The heads-up from Venice on this film put my expectations in check. I was CRAZY over Darren Aronofsky’s REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, but if there’s one truism I’ve learned over the years at this fest, it’s “Just because a director CAN make a great movie, doesn’t mean that his CURRENT one is anywhere CLOSE to his best.” (TIFF cases in point: REVOLVER, TIDELAND, and A HOLE IN MY HEART,) These lowered expectations enabled me to dispassionately analyze it. The story IS a mess on first viewing, but a cohesive story is no more a necessity for a film with visuals like this one than it was with 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. There is going to be much discussion of this film (it’s already started at the IMDB message boards), and I feel confident that some interesting perspectives will emerge. It isn’t often that I say that a film is worth seeing for its visuals alone, but this is one of those occasions. No booing at my show … just rapt attention and polite applause at the end. WISIA: Yes, I’ll watch the DVD if it includes a commentary track by Aronofsky. And I’ll SURE buy the screensaver!

I created this thread, but it was you who made it this monster. This all-consuming beast. This is Carlenstein (That sounds like a cheap beer) (P.S. Yeah, i know technically Carl should be Carlenstein, and not the beast, since Frankenstein was the name of the man, not the monster)

Eckhart joining 'Dark Knight' cast
By Borys Kit
Feb 16, 2007
Aaron Eckhart is in final negotiations to play Harvey Dent/Two Face in "The Dark Knight," Warner Bros. Pictures' sequel to "Batman Begins."
In Batman lore, Dent is the district attorney of Gotham City and an ally of Batman. After half his face is disfigured by acid, Dent becomes the insane crime boss known as Two Face. He chooses to do good or evil by flipping a coin. Tommy Lee Jones played the character in 1995's "Batman Forever."
"Knight" sees Christopher Nolan back in the director's chair with Christian Bale reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman are also returning. Heath Ledger joined the cast last summer, signing up to play the sardonic and murderous villain the Joker.
The script was written by Nolan's brother, Jonathan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. Producing are Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.
Eckhart is riding high these days thanks to his acclaimed performance in "Thank You for Smoking," which nabbed him Golden Globe and Spirit Award nominations. He next stars opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones in "No Reservations," the U.S. remake of the 2001 German feature "Mostly Martha." The film will be released by Warners in July. He is also starring in the "Untitled Alan Ball Project," Ball's directorial debut.
Eckhart is repped by CAA and Hirsch, Wallerstein, Hayum, Matlof & Fishman. |
