Yeah, I saw that teaser online. I'd like to see Superman Returns, but I'm not expecting too much. I'm not a big Supes fan anyway.

Not really a fan either. It doesn't make sense that the only thing holding back his secret identity is his glasses.

TV Guide interview with J.K. 'J. Jonah Jameson' Simmons:
http://www.tvguide.com/News/Insider/?cmsGuid=%7B32D846FC-31C8-4FFA-94B4-FB4FDF65CF4E%7D
TVGuide.com: Speaking of your films, are you done shooting Spider-Man 3? [Simmons plays Peter Parker's boss, Johan Jameson.] Simmons: Yeah, we wrapped two or three weeks ago.
TVGuide.com: The box-office bar has been raised a bit by Pirates of the Caribbean 2, eh? Simmons: [Laughs] Yeah, I'd say so!
TVGuide.com: What's your feeling on Spider-Man 3? Judging by the trailers, it looks darker. Simmons: I think it pulls in a lot of interesting directions. Of course, we're a long ways from seeing a final version of it, but my stuff, we had a lot of fun doing. I probably had not as much to do as I did in the second one, and maybe a little more than I had in the first one. But from what I saw the new bad-guy stuff is once again going to top its predecessor.
TVGuide.com: In 2, we met Jonah's son, who in Spider-Man lore evolves into a villain. But they're not playing that card yet? Simmons: Not yet. Hopefully there are plenty of cards to play for [Parts] 4, 5, 6.... I'll do a Spider-Man for every two or three years for the next couple of decades if they want. That'd be all right!
TVGuide.com: Was there any talk of Spider-Man 4 on the set? Simmons: Yeah, it got mentioned. In fact, the last couple of days I shot was at the very end of the schedule — we were doing some night-action scenes in New York — and [director] Sam [Raimi] was talking about it. It's not a done deal because everybody's deals, including Sam Raimi's and all the actors', were for three pictures. But he's certainly open to doing more.
TVGuide.com: Just back up the Brinks truck! Simmons: Exactly!
TVGuide.com: Who would win in a fistfight: Jonah Jameson or Superman Returns' Perry White, played by Frank Langella? Simmons: Hmm, Frank's pretty big... But I think I might have a little youth on my side. Also, Jameson's just got more of a nasty streak, so I think I'd probably kick his ass. |

My friend works OSHA for NBC studios (Unviversal), they just finished filming a week of Transformers shit. He said since being there that he's never seen so many explosions. FYI, the scene was filmed in a "new york" tinged lot. |

Unrelated, but J.K. Simmons is always a Nazi in the back of my mind (Oz) Same goes for Mr Eko and his tiny little woolen hat and Augustus Hill with his abducted son.

"Spider-Man movies 'may continue'" http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/5209100.stm
[edit] Two different articles here, here's the main Spidey part of the first: Meanwhile Spider-Man 3 director Sam Raimi almost revealed the identity of a third villain in his upcoming blockbuster during a panel discussion.
While it’s common knowledge that Thomas Haden Church will play Sandman and Topher Grace portrays Venom, concrete details on the webslinger's other potential foes have been thin on the ground.
Raimi went some way towards clearing that up for us when he suggested that James Franco's character of Harry Osborn, Peter Parker's longtime friend, will reinvent himself in the image of his father as some kind of goblin foe. "He does want to kill Peter Parker and uses some of his dad's [Green Goblin] technology to go after Parker," Raimi said, before covering his mouth and pulling a face.
(Plus this:) A couple more baddie updates for you: Jon Favreau said his Iron Man will do battle with The Mandarin, while The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier said the olive-skinned beastie will square up against a character known as Abomination.
Here's the second: http://www.totalfilm.com/movie_news/sam_raimi_unveils_venom
[EDIT (again)] Got this months Total Film. It says that "Producer Avi Arad recently announced there would be four villains in spidey 3" That's: Sandman, Venom, "A version of the Green Goblin" and the fourth one is open to speculation. Two possibilities are Carnage or The Lizard. Either way, i'd guess that they'll play a minor part towards the end of the movie, as a setup for the forth instalment.

I was hoping for Paul Bettany as the Joker. I think Heath is a great actor (mostly from Brokeback Mountain, where he was brilliant), but Bettany just looks so much like the skinny cartoon version of the Joker... I'm curious how they'll play the Joker in the Nolan film, everyone has such "realistic" persona in the new series, and the Joker from the Keaton film would have fit well, I think. I wonder we're they'll go with this character.

I imagine he'll be more like the comic Joker than the Burton version...probably with the purple suit and necktie, and manical grin.

The Times August 03, 2006
From Sunset Strip to comic strip
The San Diego comic-book convention has become an important movie event, says Joel Meadows Three imperial storm- troopers walk into a takeaway Mexican restaurant in San Diego. Anywhere but here and any time but now they’d get funny looks. But since I’m in California’s southernmost city for the 37th annual San Diego Comic Con, the cashier doesn’t even blink.
The connection between Star Wars and the Comic Con goes back a long way: George Lucas’s Star Wars: A New Hope was previewed at the show in 1976, when it was still seen as a risky proposition from the director of American Graffiti, and so, ever since, Lucasfilm has brought something to show at the Comic Con.
The convention began life as a comic-book show in 1969, but now boasts a list of film and TV guests that could put Cannes to shame. It’s become an essential way for the movie industry to sniff out hot new superhero characters and to woo and get feedback from the comic-book fanbase that will be buying cinema tickets on opening weekend. That’s why those appearing at this year’s San Diego Comic Con included Samuel Jackson, Hilary Swank, Nicolas Cage, Robert Rodriguez, Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, Sam Raimi and Jason Statham to promote their latest films.
Each July, more than 100,000 visitors descend on the white convention centre, an aircraft-hangar-sized hall that is packed to the rafters with giant Batman Lego figures, 8ft (2.4m) King Kongs, Frankensteins and miles of TV, film, comic-book and animation-related product. The show has become the most important ideas market for the world’s largest film companies, with Warner Brothers, Paramount, Universal and Sony all making their presence known there.
Warner Brothers gave a preview of the eagerly awaited historical epic 300, based on Frank Miller’s popular graphic novel of the same name. “300 was made for this audience,” says its director, Zack Snyder, “and the reward for me as a film director is to give the crack to the crack addicts.”
Sam Raimi was in town previewing Spider-Man 3, accompanied by Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and Bryce Dallas Howard. The trailer got a massive cheer when it was shown at the film’s panel discussion on Saturday.
Nicolas Cage had two films that he was promoting: the Marvel Comics adaptation Ghost Rider, about a hellbound biker, and Neil LaBute’s “re-imagining” of the classic British horror The Wicker Man. It’s no secret that Cage has a love of comic books, and their appeal for the silver screen is obvious to him. “I think that the comic-book movie is a wonderful way to entertain a lot of people. With comic-book films, you can charm adults and children alike,” he says. He’s also about to put something back into the industry he loves, as he’s going to be writing something with his son for Richard Branson’s new venture, Virgin Comics.
Comic Con is now broad enough to encompass films with a more arthouse bent too: del Toro’s spectacular new Spanish language horror fantasy, Pan’s Labyrinth, was featured here, as was his fellow Mexican film-maker Alfonso Cuarón’s dark, British-set, dystopian thriller Children of Men. Del Toro has stated that he considers San Diego to be as important as any of the film markets that he attends.
Fantasy was also represented by Stardust, which is based on the fantasy and graphic-novel writer Neil Gaiman’s illustrated Victorian fairytale and is the next project of Matthew Vaughn, the director of Layer Cake. With a cast that includes Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Ricky Gervais, it’s likely to attract a lot of attention when it’s released next year.
It’s not just film that makes a big showing at San Diego either: TV is very noticeable here too, as the hit sci-fi show Battlestar Galactica previewed its third season this year, as did the hit series Lost, and Fox gave fans a sneak preview of the forthcoming Simpsons movie.
The influence of manga, anime and Japanese culture is still keenly felt at the show, with many fans dressing up in costumes based on their favourite Japanese cartoons.
As the show packs up on Sunday afternoon, there’s a feeling of sadness tempered by the knowledge that next year, thousands of people will once more brave the heat, queues and packed hotels for the chance to rub shoulders, albeit briefly, with their favourite movie stars and directors. Where else can you see Sin City’s Rosario Dawson serenade the audience or get a glimpse of next year’s Pirates of the Caribbean sequel?
John Landis, the director of An American Werewolf in London, sums up the show’s appeal: “I come here as a fan because I get to meet Bernie Wrightson and Stan Sakai and hang out with Guillermo del Toro, Ray Bradbury and Ray Harryhausen. Also what I like about it is that on the same floor you have everything from fine art to absolute s*** and it’s all displayed equally, which is very democratic.”

None too bothered with a Fantastic Four sequel (I haven't even seen the dodgy-looking first one), but it is a superhero movie, so here's some news. Looks like there'll be some Silver Surfer action:

No. There was a Captain America film that came out in 1991, which didn't get a US theatrical release...that's another guy I think there's been some talk of resurrecting for the big screen.

I'm fairly certain there was a fantastic4 movie too. I saw a picture of a guy dressed in a rubbery looking orange gimp suit as the Thing. I'll try and find it again.
Didn't find the image (yet), but here's something on it: http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=1:291045

Transformer tidbits from Michael Bay
08/18/06 07:47 PM | Permalink
Nelson here...
I just barely caught Michael in between takes. Among the things he mentioned:
1- They will be releasing more teaser posters in the coming months.
2- Paramount made studies and concluded that the TF "ANNOUNCEMENT" was the 2nd highest rated "teaser" this summer.
3.- They just finished shooting a lot of Pentagon interiors on a soundstage in scenes that involved many Chiefs of staff in their huge war room.
4.- Shia just was recently suspended over the edge of a 20 story building in a very dynamic and intense scene.
5.- The average transformation time from normal mode to alt mode and vice versa is about 3 to 4 seconds.
6.- The leaked pictures are legit (although a somewhat early rendering).
7.- Filming of massive chase scenes will begin in the following weeks.
8.- The CGI transformations by ILM are looking wicked and nastier every single day.
9.- Part 1 will be about why the transformers came to earth.
10.- This movie will be a new start for the live action franchise that will not be based on any particular TF TV series and/or comic book.
And last but certainly not least, the Autobots are:
Optimus Prime: idealistic view of humanity. Bumblebee: underdog, spy, most "connected" to humans Jazz: style, loyal, eager, contemporary Ratchet: new form, medical officer, science officer. Emergency vehicle. Ironhide: tough, tough stare, first in battle, classic cowboy, gritty. Optimus' oldest friend.
Decepticons are:
Megatron: survival of the fittest, social darwinism, less idealistic view of humanity. Sees himself as advanced, sees humans as lower. Starscream: seems faithful but plotting, "we will see a lot of that dynamic," explains why he does not push it, waits for his opportunity. Brawl: eager for battle, jumps in. From non-G1 character, experimental, but will be in sequels. First disguised non-flyer. Bonecrusher: closest to constructicon but not giving away mode. Hates other cons except Megatron. Doesn't want friends. Barricade: scout, hunter, lures into trap. Scorponok: closest to Beast Wars, fitted to environment. Frenzy: "had some evolution for us," started off as Soundwave but had contradictions and changed to stay truer to G1. Smaller, able to infiltrate. Stealth spy, can hide anywhere. Blackout: comes in, takes out fighting ability, sends EMP, first-tier attack, transporter, biggest vehicle.

Exclusive! Dirt on The Dark Knight!
A couple weeks ago I spent some time chatting with director Christopher Nolan for an upcoming feature in Mean Magazine all about his new flick, The Prestige.
In addition to talking about the dueling magicians thriller at length Nolan indulged some of my curiosity about his next little project you might have heard of…the next Batman film!
You’re going to have to wait until the issue hits the streets October 23rd for the whole lengthy dialogue but in the meanwhile here’s a taste…
Horowitz: Batman Begins dealt with a range of themes from revenge to how we confront fear. What themes will you be exploring in The Dark Knight? Nolan: I suppose in loose terms I can say it’s about things having to get worse before they get better.
Horowitz: It’s that note the first film ends on of escalation? Nolan: Very much.
Horowitz: Is there anything to be inferred from the name you’ve chosen for this film, The Dark Knight? Nolan: Ultimately yes. [Laughs] But I’ll leave that for people to infer.
Horowitz: This is the cryptic portion of our chat. Nolan: Yeah. [Laughs] The title has been chosen very specifically. It’s quite important to the film.
Horowitz: I take it [the Joker] will be less Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson than the Joker we saw portrayed in a comic like The Killing Joke? Nolan: Yes. I would certainly point to The Killing Joke but I also would point very much to the first two appearances of the Joker in the comic. If you look at where the Joker comes from there’s a very clear direction that fits what we’re doing very well.
Want to know more?!? Pick up the magazine October 23rd! And maybe if you’re nice I’ll mention a couple more tidbits here soon…such as Nolan’s thoughts on taking on The Prisoner and another huge franchise character as yet unmentioned…
NOTE: If you are linking or reporting this story on your site please be sure to include Mean Magazine and Meanmag.net as a source. And remember the issues hits stands October 23rd.
Thanks. Josh |
