Does anyone else find this ridiculously over the top?

http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2006/05/29/heelys-ban.html

Really. How far do we want to go down the road to where children are brought up in hypoallergenic plastic padded bubbles as invalids? When I was a kid I did all sorts of stuff without helmets, kneepads, etc, etc, etc. And now you have to wear them with wheeled shoes?

Umm, correct me if I'm wrong, but a person could very easily trip and fall while running/sprinting, possibly twisting an ankle or at least getting some scrapes. I know. I've done it (except for the ankle twist).

I'm not saying I love these guys zipping around in the mall, but that's not the point nor would I ban the shoes from there.

Anyway, that's my rant.

I can understand banning them from schools, but not from malls and stuff, unless they're shown to contribute to hurting other people.

Never even heard of such shoes, but the Hillary ne nanny culture is old hat, as it were.

[how do I add that European accent mark over the "e" in "ne"?]

I've got no problem with banning them in schools or malls. I've had kids whip by me in drugstores with those things on and they obviously aren't worried about who may step around the corner. Why not ban them indoors? You can't wear rollerblades or ride a skateboard at school or in malls.

And the article doesn't say helmets are being required; only recommended. Seems wise to me.

They should just have the same laws that apply to rollerskating.

Because they are rollerskates, really. Or at least modified ones.

Haha, Mike, you know that it's actually my secret dream to own a pair, too.

If we're arguing about them being banned for the sake of not having people run around inside, or rather wheel around, where they're likely to run into other people, that's not my objection. My objection is, I suppose, that kids don't really get to be kids anymore, do they?

You're right Darwin, it doesn't say required, but recommended, which hurts/impugnes nobody, I just get a little annoyed with this extremist nannymaking. I'm not sure what nannymaking is, but is sounds British so I'm keeping it.

Ban away, but only when we also ban those who take a tight LEFT turn around the blind corner (at least in societies where the traffic moves on the right). [and tell me, in the UK where the auto traffic moves on the left, do you similary walk on the left side of the hallway/sidewalk? Seems to me only consistent that road traffic and pedestrian traffic follow the same conventions. But then again it may be that such foolish consistency is merely American. ]

George Carlin said something about safety wear and natural selection. The kid that falls on his ass too many times whilst riding his roller skates shouldn't get to grow up and have kids. Helmets meddle with nature.

Nah, Erebus, their up escalators are usually on the left and people walk on the left too. Not always, but not always here in NA either.

Here in the US, the only cases I can think of where opposing streams pass on the left are the occasional escalator and some large-volume situations such as airports. So, if I get you right, they, the "other" in the UK and elsewhere, actually both drive on the left AND walk on the left. And it must have long been so? Whereas both we here in the US and you in Canada usually do the opposite? Of course I knew about the driving, but it is the sidewalks and hallways that strike me as strange. I guess such differences have long been understood but it does seem strange that the Anglo New World diverges from the Anglo Old World on something so fundamental. So, guess I'm off to google, but, man, I hate trusting google. (Don't google google if you want to know what I mean.)

edit: almost sorry I mentioned it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drive_on_the_right

Hmmm. Very funny. I believe 35 years old is the cut-off age for skate-shoes and wearing your baseball cap backwards. My guess he does both? Oh well. Young at heart is a good thing.

Well, I knew that Napoleon had converted a lot of countries to driving on the right, but there's a lot on this rather informative page that I didn't know:

No backwards caps, but lots of hoodies and such. He's definitely young at heart, and he's an elementary school teacher. The school doesn't let him wear them. He sure gets a lot of looks heelying around though.

Perfect! How could you ever grow up being an elementary school teacher? He's got the life.
