Hi friends,

I'm going to be in Los Angeles from the 28th-1st. My friends who i am staying with work all day, so i'm looking for some relatively cheap daytime activities. Museums and the like.

Also, any good shows going on? Pollstar shows me not too much minus Bill Frisell, which i may check out.

The Getty Museum is free and rad. Yes i said rad. The beach is free aside from parking and is also rad. A stroll thru Olvera street is pretty high up on the rad'o meter. Tell your friends to go to universal studios and get the "rest of the year free" pass. You'll save $$$ on that one. Take in the Arboritum in Arcadia, you'll get to see the fantasy island house aka the falker house. Drinks aren't free but they are the raddest.

Hey Brian, everahbuddy!

I'll second Amoeba Music. You'll want to spend a few hours in there, and will be lucky to leave with wallet unscathed.

For the cheap stuff with nearly unlimited entertainment/educational value, go here:

The Museum Of Jurassic Technology
9341 Venice Boulevard
Culver City, CA 90232

www.mjt.org

We're going to be in LA a lot pretty soon here, if things go according to plan. I intend to be spending a lot of time at both of these places. Hope you can check em out - have fun, man.

I'll be staying in West Hollywood sans car. I don't mind public transportation, nor do i mind walking places. I know its a spread out city so i have no delusions of walking the whole thing, but i would hope with the combo of walking/public transit i could get by.

That's Reginald Denny country there. Alternatively, you could walk down Fairfax with your PLO t-shirt...

Well Brian, if you can get into Hollywood and hop on the Red Line (the subway runs under Hollywood Blvd from Highland Ave eastward) you can get a day pass for $3. That can take you to downtown LA where you can check out the Civic Center, Little Tokyo, Olvera Street, Chinatown and the like. There are transpo details at http://www.mta.net/

hey brian, these guys already mentioned some good ones. here are some old threads you might find informative:

http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7600
http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14535

i hate to say it but without a car in LA it's pretty tough, but, like BLT said, if you can get to the subway you can go from Hollywood to Downtown. MOCA is a good museum. i would definitely try to make it to the Getty. a nice way to see the whole city (from on top of a hill) and pick up on Asian and European tourists. i mean, see some art.

if you're in LA you may as well go to the beach. you can hang out in Venice and pretend to be Jim Morrison.

any way you could borrow one of your friends cars?

ps. West Hollywood is also often referred to as "boys town", but i'll let you figure out why while you're there.

good luck!

I doubt it - they both work relatively mobile jobs. I could try. If not, i'll find a way - i'm wiley.

I basically plan on shopping for 7"s in Amoeba for most of the week anyway.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm trying to convince my two sports-hating friends to travel up to Anaheim to check out a ballgame too. Damn Dodgers aren't home...

Hey y'all, good to see you too! just been spread a little thin lately. Hopefully I can hang out a bit more now.

On the topic, I haven't actually been to LA yet. Just know someone from my highschool days that works at Amoeba, and I am obsessed with the Museum of Jurassic Technology. SpudBoy and I are involved (him more than me) in a startup company that's based in Orange County, so I feel like I've been there already.

Brian, I hope you can make it to that Museum - it's not what it seems on the surface at all. Very mysterious and wonderful place/concept. It's free too (they accept donations when offered), and it's right next to a bus stop. I think you'd really dig it.

hey apl, i'm just curious have you been to the museum? (since you said you haven't been to LA yet)..

it's walking distance from where i'm working now. i haven't been there in a few years so i think i'll have to check it out again.

ps. brian, if you actually do go there, you should go eat at the Hari Krishna temple around the corner. 6 bucks, all you can eat buffet

We went to the MJT about six or seven years ago. It just was a little storefront with, like, three or four rooms and an odd little man sitting behind the reception desk. I liked the microscopic sculptures by the Armenian guy but otherwise the place was a bit of a letdown. Even though it was a Sunday, we were the only guests present, which is why I find it amazing that the place is still there. I suppose there's no denying the dedication of the Jurassic subculture.

Nope, not yet. I've read the book, watched the dvd, nosed around the internets, and got some sweet Viewmaster cards and various weird items. The concept of the place is probably far more intriguing to me because I came upon it through a strange coincidence, without prior knowledge of its purpose. Someday I hope to create a sister museum in my hometown. There is at least one sister site in the US, and another I know of in Europe. Then there are the idiosyncratic publications... it gets more exciting and mysterious the further you dig into its history and contents. On a recent visit back to Chicago, I had a list of items to look into based on some research from the book. We tried to check out some strange items related to Abraham Lincoln that used to be housed in a historic jail there, but the hours weren't in keeping with our schedule. Hopefully next time we'll make it.

you're making me more interested in the place now apl. i'll take a trip there soon and give you an update.

and yes, the Krishna temple lunch kicks ass. i'm not vegetarian, and i'm not usually a fan of strictly vegi places, but this one is great. not to mention cheap.

and, there are usually cute krishna chicks working there (if you don't mind a little under-arm hair)

No suggestions but I do envy you. I've seen a good portion of most parts of California but never had the nerve to venture into La La Land. I forget: will you get to see a baseball game? I'm sure it's fun to visit a different ballpark, though I've only been to three myself. Enjoy yourself.
