Maybe the fact that no one even cares to post a reply answers my question.

It's all because of the magic!
No, I don't really give a shiny monkey crap about this guy. That sitting in a box thing in London. What the hell was that all about!?

Not really that impressive. According to rumours, some dude a few hundred years back walked on water. Can you imagine? He actually walked (w-a-l-k-e-d) on water. Ha! Now that's magic! |

I think what he does is interesting. At least he's trying to do stuff that's extraordinary.

I think it's sort of impressive the lengths he's willing to go to get attention. More than anything else though he's better than the usual crop of 'celebrity' magicians like David Copperfield. But Blaine still creeps me out. My girlfriend always says that she's pretty positive he's the devil.

do you really think it's attention seeking? It's no worse or better than, say, an actor making a movie for entertainment. But he does seem to be trying to push himself to feats of human endurance, and that's cool.

It's his slight of hand that impresses me. I've brought a fly "back to life" so that one doesn't wash. The endurance stuff, well i'm just jealous. I wish I could have time off work to swim around a giant goldfish bowl. It looks fun. |

Does anyone think he'll really be able to hold his breath for 9 minutes at the end of this stunt?

maybe
quote: Static Apnea - The diver holds his or her breath for as long as possible while floating face-down in a swimming pool. The world record is held by Tom Sietas of Germany who stayed under for 8 minutes, 47 seconds
[edit] the record, by the same guy, is now 8mins 58 seconds

Yeah i heard about that 8:58 record too. Blaine has to do 2 whole seconds more. Difference is he is peeling inside a tank for a week. I heard as well that technically Blaine is cheating as he is inhaling pure oxygen as opposed to the current world record holder inhaling natural air.

Love it, homers. Ah, the memories. Thanks for that!

I didn't realise he had a constant supply of oxygen. It would have been more entertaining to have him surface for air like our sea fairing mammal friends.
Good luck, Blaine. You'll need it.

and man, he almost died attempting his "holding his breath underwater" trick today... God missed a great opportunity there to spare the world of one utterly useless human being.
i remember walking past him while he was suspended in his box over the thames in london. i was appalled and amazed at how many people went to watch...sure, most of them were just there to throw stuff at him, but to even nake that much effort suprised me.
all i can say, thank god for polio! brian |

I still don't get why anyone would think of him like that. He's trying to do extraordinary things.......I can't imagine what it would be like mentally to stay in a globe of water for 24 hours let alone 7 days.

it's all about publicity. he's not interested in doing phenomenal things for any other reason but to become famous. well thats what i think about him, and i'm not interested in people who do things for that reason. sure, that rules out a very large number of people, but he in particular annoys me.
he's not interested in stretching the bounds of human indurance as the things he's doing are just stupid. living in a box suspended above the thames for gods sake!?!?!?!?!?
true, the god missing an opportunity comment was in bad taste, but i just have zero respect for him.

He's stated that his idol is Houdini, and I guess in some small way he wants to emulate him. In almost everything these days there's an element of self-promotion but that's reasonable I think.
I don't think he's any different to any other artist in terms of that. In fact you could argue he's less nauseating since he only appears every couple of years or so. It takes him a long time to prepare for some of his stunts.
I suppose I'm just sick of all the cynicism that surrounds people that try and do things these days. It's like we want to ridicule them for wanting to try and do something out of the norm. You could extend it to people like Evel Knievel (was there the same level of cynicism surrounding him??), hell even a director who makes a ground-breaking film. Are they doing it for art, or for self-promotion? Maybe it's a bit of both.
That which does not kill me postpones the inevitable.

I have to confess to near uncontrolable giggles when I read that the skin was coming off his hands because of being submerged so long.
Meh, if it makes me a bad person I'm a bad person. I just think he's a little bit ridiculous.
