In this very order for my friend who out of the blue went to the fb show on October 9 just so I wouldn't go alone, drove me home when I was drunk, and now keeps telling me to put on some of that "Black guy" whenever we have driven anywhere:
In the Time of my Ruin Everything is New Southbound Bevy Speedy Marie My Favorite Kiss Atom in my Heart California Bound Baby That’s Art All My Ghosts Hostess w/the Mostess Superabound Abstract Plain Western Star San Antonio Bullet So Bay Adda Lee Hermaphroditos Fazer Eyes
Maybe put some Los Angeles in there...can't find my orange album right now to load on my computer and see where it fits. So far that's all I have, with maybe 10 mins left to fit on the cd.
I'd rather be anywhere or doing anything |

The ten-track mix tape, now with reasons!
1. If It Takes All Night - to assure the beginner that Frank loves to rock, and does so with gusto! 2. Places Named After Numbers - to gently introduce the intergalactic motifs in Frank's music. 3. Western Star - to ease the listener into the more countri-fied later work. 4. End of Miles - to show Frank as the "road-weary troubador" that we've come to love. 5. Manitoba - sort of a continuation of the current theme, indefinable roots rock, this time with religious images. 6. Honeycomb - to mellow them out a little after the intensity of the past couple of tunes. 7. Superabound - because it's time for another rocker, and this is one of the best. 8. Don't Ya Rile 'Em - continuing along the same lines, very climactic indeed. 9. Black Letter Day - prime "angry Frank", by this time they're already hooked, so it's time to bring out the big guns. 10. Dog in the Sand - the closer, one of FB's most beautiful songs, a heartbreaking end to the perfect introduction.

I'm also making an introduction to Frank. I'm making it two parts, with each half running under an hour. Here's the first installment, covering his first four albums:
1. Los Angeles 2. Fu Manchu 3. Places Named After Numbers 4. Two Spaces 5. Parry the Wind High, Low 6. Don't Ya Rile 'Em 7. (I Want To Live on an) Abstract Plain 8. Calistan 9. Fiddle Riddle 10. Speedy Marie 11. Headache 12. Freedom Rock 13. Superabound 14. Men In Black 15. Jesus Was Right 16. The Cult of Ray 17. All My Ghosts
It's amazing all that great music fits into 56 minutes.
I'll get back to you when I've finished part 2. That one might be even harder to narrow down all the choices. |

I think for an intro, it doesn't need to be as completist as people are trying to make it. Just a sampling. I really think it should be chronological as well.

I have a problem with the inclusions of San Antonio, Parry The Wind, Coastline, and Honeycomb. Not that I don't love those songs, but for an introduction, they are just not fit for it. |

I suppose if you're only looking at 'accessible' then maybe they don't fit as well, but if you're trying to provide someone with a sort of all-encompassing mix, then I'd say that Parry the Wind is probably the best example of quirky songwriting and timings. Keeping in mind that this was done prior to the release of Fastman Raiderman, Honeycomb is probably the best example of Nashville-era Frank. Coastline is a good song for connecting Show Me Your Tears with Honeycomb/FMRM. I'd probably agree that San Antonio or California Bound could go, but one or the other, not both. California Bound, for example, definitely captures the feel of BLD.
Plus it was voted on by lots of people here, so I suppose that while I may not be particularly enamoured with California Bound or San Antonio (or Honeycomb for that matter), having a bunch of people give their opinion helps weed out some personal bias.

Here's what you could call the alpha and omega FB mix or maybe the beginning to end mix. I was suprised how a lot of these songs flow in to each other... not all, but most
los angles don't ya rile em what ever happened to pong? pie in the sky the marsist the last stand of S.A. all my ghosts the man who was too loud bad harmony so. bay blast off if it takes all night (regular) the black ryder whispering weeds velvety fields of marigolds nadine manatoba selkie bride sing for joy if your posison gets you fare thee well

That is indeed one of the best ones I've read yet, orangemagic. Lots of my favourite FB songs are in there.
Daisy, I like your idea of having the first and last tracks of each album. I might create me a playlist like that and give it a listen.

Your mix is sort of missing all the classic FB songs, though. But since we've moved from intro mixes to mixes in general, I suppose that's okay.

i see your point. how about a mix of women as the subject matter... jane the queen of love, violet, nadine, selkie bride, velvety, cold heart of stone, number 13, etc. I guess the same could be said for guys... Johnny Barleycorn, 10 Percenter, Sir Rock, Fitzgerald etc. |

I've just found a Catholics mix I made a few weeks ago. It's not something I'd use to introduce a friend to FB&TC's, just a few of my favourites to play around the house. It goes like this:
1. All My Ghosts 2. Back To Rome 3. Humboldt County Massacre 4. Living On Soul 5. Western Star 6. Billy Radcliffe 7. 85 Weeks 8. I've Seen Your Picture 9. St. Francis Dam Disaster 10. Robert Onion 11. Bullet 12. If It Takes All Night 13. California Bound 14. Cold Heart Of Stone 15. I Will Run After You 16. 21 Reasons 17. Velvety 18. Out Of State 19. Heloise 20. Everything Is New 21. Massif Centrale 22. Coastline 23. Manitoba

A very good mix. I looked at it without cringing.
Nice job, FB Forum Members! Give yourself a big round of applause!
By the way, this post is the closest I've ever come to a pep talk.

This is an impossible task. I was glad to see "21 Reasons" on some of these lists. "Whiskey In Your Shoes", "Tiny Heart", "Johnny Barleycorn". What about "The Man Who Was Too Loud", was that on any list? Don't forget "Steak and Sabre" but it is much better live.
