I was inspired to start this thread after reading the Coldplay/Fecular discharge discussion. I personally don't have that much of an opinion on Coldplay, they're fairly inoffensive but are unbelievably bland. The music equivalent of wallpaper paste. So which band/artist really winds you up? Aside from the likes of Shitney Spears and Robbie Williams, I'm talking about those who are credible and critically acclaimed. And you feel like you are the only person who realises how shite they are.
Im gonna start the discussion with 2 of my most hated: 1. U2 - can anyone tell me why these Irish rockers are continually felated by the music press and adored by millions of fans all around the world? Aside from being derivative and peddling bullshit cock rock for the past 20 odd years, I find these dinosaurs completely reprehensible for their attitude towards poverty. Bono espouses eradicating Third World debt, but his attitude is indulgent and mostly insensitive to those millions who have allowed him and the rest of U2 to live well. This from a band who charges £45 for a ticket just to see Boner and 'the edge' (the shittest nickname in the history of rock) masturbate furiously on stage. In songs such as 'Crumbs From Your Table' Bono laments the West and its wealthiest peoples for not doing enough to solve world hunger. Bono suggests that crumbs from our table could help starving people in Africa. This may be true, but I find it disgusting coming from the mouth of a man as extravagant as Bono. Lose the sunglasses you stupid fuck. 2. Madonna - If the music press could remove 'Madges' penis from their ears for long enough they would realise that her supposed 'ability to adapt' to the current music scene is nothing short of bandwagon hopping. She charges in excess of £40 to see her mime and waggle her camel toe around. I would rather drink varnish.

I think U2 might have, at the time (I don't know, it's before my time), once been valid. They seem to have just become a parody of themselves now. Age and ego have not served them well.
Madonna looks stringy.

In defense of U2, Bono's crusade is separate, although it comes through a bit in their lyrics of late. So what? There are loads of bands who make similar pontificating remarks in their lyrics about povert etc. Bono gets shot down because he's one of the more successful campaigners and puts himself in the frontline. OMG, I bet you hate Bob Geldof as well. I'm sick of people slagging off celebrities who try and do good stuff. OK, maybe it looks hypocritical. Maybe Bono wants governments to change policies rather than him chuck his wad at Africa. Is that such a bad thing? Really?
If they have become a parody of themselves it's more because of people tangling up the Bono/poverty thing with U2. U2 have managed to move and change musically over 20 years, just like any band with longevity has to (Staus Quo being the exception that proves the rule).
Aside from all that, I hate UB40 with a passion. Terrible whiney vocals. Unimaginitive songs. Practically the only thing on this world that I actively hate. Aside from carrots.

just cause of elevation or because sometimes their lyrics are shit? All bands have crap lyrics at times. They have some good lyrics too. Before Pixies came along, I guess they were my favourite band.
*ps - I am a bit drunk* :)

Benji, you often strike me as a thoroughly sensible young man and this only cements that conviction.

i can't really think of a band that really grinds my gears, but i'm sure there have been a few in the past. (i sat around trying to think of one for quite a while, so i think this post is worthy.)

Oh god, I can't agree with the initial post more. U2 and Maddona make me spit bile. And I want to jam AIDs-tainted forks into Robbie William's eyes. Not just because he's a pop muppet who makes terrible music, he is a terrible human being. The macho posturing, his smug fucking face ARGHHHHHHHHHHGHGHGHHG
Yes, and cockrock too. GNR, the lot. Teen angst haircut bands. All of them. Any band with some skinny cunt in skinny jeans and a massive sideparting whining about his ex-girlfriend.. and the other singer who does the screamy vocal part. There's so many more interesting topics to write songs about and not inflict upon my ears.
Truth be said, I don't mind a few Coldplay songs. But a few whistable songs makes a good band not.
Needless to say, I'm somewhat passionate about music.

I don't mind that song (I have a nice version of michael stipe covering it. I've also heard a horrible beverly night cover though) but that lyric isn't all that great really.
The one I voted for was second :)

I think there are way more overrated bands (like the aforementioned U2, Killers, etc) that don't really bother me despite their over-done respect. Only a few bands really make me angry with their sucess.
Dean's favorite Nickelback is pretty close to the top of my list, as are bands like Creed (thankfully defunct), Limp Bizkit (thankfully not very popular anymore) and Korn.

I completely agree with llama about Bono being unfairly criticised for not doing enough and about UB40 being devoid of any value. |

Haha, I was just ranting to a coworker about Nickleback's awesomeness (at being the worst band of the first decade of this millenium).

To be honest there aren't too many bands that I will criticise. After all, how many albums have I made? Answer = 0. But I suppose I find Coldplay a bit bland (then again some people may find my musical taste a bit bland, so it's all just opinions really) and I don't care for Morissey/The Smiths (overrated), although I haven't heard much to be honest. But like I say, these people have made records and are successful and I'm not, so I can't be too critical of them.

Any corporate snot-nosed poppy "punk" bands who whine about love, or who play ill-conceived three-chord covers of old pop standards without melody, i.e. any band who lists Green Day as one of their prime influences. (I actually don't mind Green Day, but any band who namechecks them must naturally suck.) |

When I meet people who say they like U2, I tend to think they are a bit special, you know like a coma victim that has a recorded message from daniel o'donnell. They shouldnt be mocked, they should be pitied. That said it is between them and coldplay that if I had to listen to an album by them, or to be stripped of my skin and dipped in salt, I would choose the latter over both.

HaHaHaHa
Im loving this thread. Advocating violence against shit bands and comparing U2 fans to coma victims!
I've just thought of another one: Kanye West. Okay, the guys music isn't bad for hip hop, but if you strip away all the samples I think you would be left with some very bare bones. The music press dont seem to agree unfortunately and are often unavailable for comment on the issue because they are too busy choking on Kanyes flaccid penis. There are multiple mentions of cars, girls, weed and money with a couple of political references thrown in but the content of his records is often been sieved by reviewers (the references to bitches and ho's removed) leaving only a 'conscious' rapper who is barely recognisable from the suave, ego-driven, contradictory reality. He spoke out about homophobia in rap and called George bush a racist. Big fucking deal. Also, thinks he is God.

I'm not a Hard Rock fan at all but I've seen some live videos of early GNR that really rocks and I've been to a Velvet Revolver concert (GNR minus Axl Rose). AC/DC are cool too.
I don't like Radiohead. I don't know why. I don't like Bjork.

The last sentence was very good, but not enough to make up for all the previous ones in this post.
Velvet Revolver and Gun n Roses over Radiohead and Bjork? What is the world coming to?

ahh, the fine line/the twist. You have to make a thread in order to bash bands. Silly me. That aside,
count me in for
pearljam (or the whole "grunge" scene alltogether) talking heads (hardly pioneers) the clash (hardly pioneers, again) Bjork - what gives? Sugar cubes maybe but as a solo artist she's common blow. |
