M83: A bit too much. Too grand. Reminds me of the Dambuilders' final album quite a bit.

-

I'll pass this track along to my wife. It's a little more her speed, I think.

I love M83, that's been fairly well-documented, but I don't think Homer picked the best track. Anything off the band's second album (Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts) is better than than anything off the latest album, which although it has it's moments, is a bit too overblown, a bit too bombastic. Not that Dead Cities... is restrained as such, but there's a bit more room to breathe.
There were two of them in the band at that point, and I think that helped - one man band's tend to be a bit too much one man's vision...

re: Arthur Russell

I've always been meaning to check some of his stuff out, but somehow always end up not doing so. I'm seriously kicking myself for that, because this song is jaw-droppingly amazing. I immediately sought out a copy of the entire album on Soulseek, and I'm most definitely going to buy a copy (and anything else by him) if it's available at my local music shop.

re: M83

I guess I'm in the minority here in enjoying this song. I own Dead Cities... and love it, but did find Before the Dawn Heals Us to be a bit of a letdown. "Teen Angst" is one of that album's highlights, though, despite...yeah, being a bit overblown.

The Organ

-

Owe quite a bit to Blondie/Siouxie. Maybe tip their hat to Lora Logic (Essential Logic).

Very nice sound. I'll probably look for "Grab That Gun" next time I'm in the record shop.

I quite liked The Organ.....and basically what everyone else said about who they sound like/influences. Thanks kathryn.

Not bad. I do keep meaning to check Bob's solo stuff out, and whilst this song doesn't exactly bowl me over, it by no means discourages me either.

I could see it growing on me more too.

We have to keep fighting the good fight kathryn. I love that version, it's better than the album track. In fact, that whole concert is amazing.

Indeed, it is so tasty, superior to the already amazing album version.

But, um, (bats eyelashes) did you say, um, "whole concert," Steve?

yeah sure. I should have offered, tbh. Ok, can you open .rar files or is it just .zip or .sitx? It's fairly big, so I'll have to split it into two parts.

Hey thanks.

-

I think I prefer the album version to the live track.

From what I've read he's the cat's pajamas. I didn't care much for this song, though. Is there any song or album you'd recommend to someone new to Mr. Mould?

Have I reviewed kathryn's tracks? I think not. I liked them, they're solid, but to be fair I feel tired now of the 80s/90s revival. They would be really good IMO if they didn't have that dated sound, cause their songs are very catchy. By the way, does anyone remember The Catchers? One-record band from the 90s? It reminds me a bit of them.

yeah well, my english vocabulary is limited. Memorize The City is upbeat and the chorus gets stuck in my head, I couldn't find a better word than "catchy" to describe it.

Fair enough. I do like them, I just wouldn't say they stick in my head that much. Except 'Brother'. There may be some I haven't heard that are more poppy.

Brian, not too bad. However, i don't see myself wanting to listen to this much more.
the dual vocals business didn't do anything for me.
'twas nice enough, just not my style.

Cool song. Didn't realize that the Halo Benders were a sort-of supergroup.

Gets better on each listen. Clever, catchy. Even like the little cartoon-y "broi-oing-oing"

REVIEW - Bob Mould: I love Hüsker Dü and Sugr but for some reason I don't have any album by Bob solo, even though I like everything I've heard from that era. I think I prefer the album version. It's a great song. Which album is it from?

God, I love The Halo Benders. I've always had trouble finding a physical copy of The Rebels Not In, but just three days ago I finally stumbled upon it used at my local indie shop for only $5.99. That was great.

"Don't Touch My Bikini" is a classic, of course.

A 3-album (so far) side project between Built to Spill's Doug Martsch and Beat Happening's Calvin Johnson. I only have their debut, GOD DON'T MAKE NO JUNK. The rhythm section is, i believe, original BTS drummer Ralf Youtz and ex-Treepeople bassist Rhino Flower. You can get their albums via Johnson's K Records, www.krecs.com

The song just works for me - its fun, and peppy and a very perfect spring/summer track.

It's from his first solo album, Workbook.

OBW - that may as good a place to start as any, but my favourite solo album is probably The Last Dog & Pony Show.

The Halo Benders - sorry Brian,I find this kind of irritating. Don't really like the vocals, which is maybe a bit rich, considering the singers I do like, but they annoy me. Backing vocals are ok, and musically not bad. Maybe a bit quirky for my tastes too.
