The more I delve the more I realise the less I know. I’m trying to get this down and this is what I have so far. If anyone can in true song database style correct a lyric, suggest a reference or a definition, tell me whether or not you rate the song or even more fabulously provide a quote it would be amazing.
A huge pre-emptive THANK YOU
Bone Machine
This is a song for Carol
You're into Japanese fast food And I drop off your Japanese lover And you're going to the beach all day You're so pretty when you're unfaithful to me You're so pretty when you're unfaithful to me
You're looking like You've got some sun Your blistered lips Have got a kiss The taste of it like everyone Uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh
Your bone's got a little machine You're the bone machine
I was talking to preachy-preach about kissy-kiss He bought me a soda He bought me a soda He bought me a soda and he tried to molest me in the parking lot Yep yep yep yep
I make you pray You make me hard Your irish skin Looks Mexican Our love is rice and beans and horses lard Your bone's got a little machine You're the bone machine
Uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh Uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh
Your bone's got a little machine
Am I right in thinking there is a relationship between this song and the Tom Waits album of the same name? I am certain I read a quote on this somewhere… Just to show how hard it can be to figure out lyrics for years I thought it was And I chopped up your Japanese Lover… I am *special*
Break My Body
I'm the hardy loser You'll find me crashing through my mother's door I am the ugly lover You'll find us rolling on the dirty floor
Break my body hold my bones hold my bones Break my body hold my bones hold my bones Break my body hold my bones hold my bones
I'm a belly dancer I shake for arabs and I never care I'm a building jumper Roof to roof you see me flying in the air
Break my body hold my bones hold my bones Break my body hold my bones hold my bones Break my body hold my bones hold my bones
Somebody got hurt Somebody get hurt Somebody got hurt
Something Against You
I've got something against you I've got something against you Here we go I've got something against you I've got something against you I've got something against you I've got something against you I've got something against you Oh yeah I am one happy prick

Gigantic gigantic gigantic A big big love Gigantic gigantic gigantic A big big love
Lovely legs they are What a big black mask What a hunk of love He'd walk her every day into a shady place He's like the dark, but I’d want him

Frank on Bone Machine (in Select, October 1997): "The imagery is a reference to female anatomy - the pelvis as a sexual area of life. It's an area that people move and swing when they dance."
Frank on Broken Face (not sure where): "There was this boy who had two children with his sisters...who were his daughters...uh, what can I say...who were his favorite lovers!"
Also from Frank: "When I reached my teens, I discovered rock 'n roll and started getting interested in girls. So I guess that sort of religious/sexual conflict of interests is where a lot of the songs come from. The Bible's got a lot of wild stories in the Old Testament - the incest thing pops up a lot in my songs."
Cactus
Obviously the lyrics are about a prisoner asking his gf for visceral things of her. Frank told Melody Maker (not sure when) that the music was inspired by T. Rex's The Groover.
(On a personal note, I was devastated when my friend convinced me that it was "cement floor" and not "semen floor.")
Gigantic
Frank (again in Select, October 1997): "A good chord progression, very Lou-Reed influenced. I'd had the word 'gigantic' in my mind just because the chord progression seemed very big to me." Kim has said that the 1986 Bruce Beresford film "Crimes Of The Heart" inspired her. That's the movie where Sissy Spacek is a married white woman who falls for a black teen boy.
Tony's Theme
Many times all four band members have said that this song is about floop.
River Euphrates
Frank (in Sound, sometime?):
"The boogie sequence at the end of River Euphrates is 'a fake Jesus And Mary Chain song'."
Where is my mind?
Several times Frank has said that this is about him snorkeling in the Caribbean and being chased by a little fish.
I got some heaven in my head

PIXIES by Joy Press OPTION #21, July/August 1988.
So who the hell is Rosa and why is she topless on the cover of the record?
" Oh, she's a surfer, " Charles nods, humming the tune " Oh My Golly , " the song in which Rosa is named. She's a surfer girl, walks along the Beach of Binones, has a surfboard, very beautiful. "
And the topless bit?
" 'Cause she's pretty? Probably, but I didn't make the cover. For the first record, I told them I liked nudity. I like body lines - not necessarily something in bad taste, didn't even have to be female, just body lines... like that Obsession ad, you know? We could do a cover like Obsession, we'll all spend three months... "
" Working out? " Kim interrupts.
" No, no, no, I'll get fatter. You guys could all put on 30lbs. We'll be like sloths. " |

Hey the Reunion DVD makes the lyrics to Bone Machine pretty clear.
Just watch trax 1 & 7, and you'll see Frank is singing "Preacher Preach" and "I make you pray/you make me hard"
Makes the whole molestation thing make more sense, eh? |

The songs about a kid that is being seduced by a priest that was counseling them on the birds & the bees, ya know? "he buy me a soda"
At least that's how I've always taken it. |

'I'm the horny loser'-I thought it was 'hardy loser'.
'I shake for arabs and I never care'-that sounds a lot better, you could be on to something, Ed!!
I remember journalistic blurb in a magazine(s) mentioning how Black wrote songs about serial killers, UFOs, incest, abortion, etc., and thinking maybe Break My Body was about abortion!
It's been suggested elsewhere that in River Euphrates, he could possibly be singing 'ride a tyre', but tiger sounds more likely to me.
Aleceiffel.net have the assumed 'Oh Yeah' in Something Against You as 'And I'm gonna use it', and they have the 'A ball of string, my favorite toy' line as 'A ball of string my parents took from me.'
I used to think he sang 'There was this man who smashed his brain in little pieces' in Broken Face. And that in Cactus, he sang 'Sittin' here wishin' on a semen floor'! Cactus was inspired by the true story of a prison inmate's request to his lover.
Frank was snorkling on a Carribean holiday in his youth, when a little fish swam by him and seemed to him at the time to be trying to communicate with him! That inspired WIMM?

You mean it isn't "There was this man who smashed his brain in little pieces" in Broken Face?
"I shake for arabs" sounds right in 'Break my Body'.
I definitely hear "ride a tyre" in 'River Euphrates'.
In 'I'm Amazed' I always thought it was: The day before That I was wed She went upstairs And shot her head, I'm Amazed...
And when I was a little boy A ball of string my parents took away from me...(he does sing "...my favourite toy" in some versions though [like Frank Black Francis]) ...also the last line of the last verse should say "...to Arizona, I'm Amazed..."(I think)
...and yeah, I always thought it was 'semen floor' too!

Ok, I'll edit these for everyones approval, thank you all so much for the quotes and references and with much huffing puffing and pouting I will accept preachy-preach.
I might leave it as peachy peach just to piss pixiesteve off for a little while.
Please, if anyone finds or figures anything else, post it. I'll get the next album up soon.
Thank you. |

What do people think of the lyric being "Ride the Tigris to the River Euphrates"? The two legendary rivers of mythological lore, not to mention modern water disputes? Why can't I remember to ask Frank in The King Holds Court important stuff like this, instead of "Frank, what's your favorite pasta recipe?" Damn.

actually as far as the lyrics go what I've been doing is finding and comparing as many online sources as I can before playing the song really loud on my nano to see what I think fits best. It's not an exact science. |

But isn't your fancy grad degree was in the exact science of franklyricology?
Seriously, Tre, "Ride the Tigris to the River Euphrates" teems of the kind of history-based songwriting Frank's known for. Tigris, Euphrates, Mesopotamia. C'mon!
