now for the 2nd part to the question - who's got best male voice in rock?
obviously our frank'll be up there, but to continue my current Low fetish, i'm going to go with Alan Sparhawk.
with Jonsi from Sigur Ros riding on Alans heals...

Another vote for Nick Cave here, also John R Cash.

It depends on what you mean by best: I think some voices, while not technically great, can have an emotional connection on a different level. For example, Kurt Cobain, or Jeff Mangum from Neutral Milk Hotel, Robert Johnson...

do i see billy corgan on that list? oh my.

i'll be unoriginal and annoy floop by saying nick cave. carl newman has a nice voice when he wants to. does john lee hooker count as rock? he'd fit on cheesey's emotional connection list.

Tod Ashley (Firewater) is a personal favourite.

The Mosley brothers (of acoustic British band Moses) have truly beautiful voices.

I like Andy Partridge's voice a lot, and I like Scott McCaughey as well. I have to wonder whether I'd think that if I didn't like their songs so much, though. For some reason, I think I generally consider good male voices to be more conditional than good female ones.

EDIT: Oh, and I shouldn't forget all four members of Moxy Früvous.

I saw Gruff supporting Mogwai a month or two back, doing his solo thang - he was brilliantly entertaining and you're right, he has a great voice.

Mark Lanegan I forgot, good call. Bubblegum is a great album.

And duh, Jeff Buckley, I always forget the important ones. He can go on the emotional connection list.

Okay, Jeff Tweedy has an amazing voice, I heard it live and was amazed
Freddie Mercury is an acquired tast, I've heard so many people say that they don't like his tone.
I think it's magical, and he could do so much with it.

Heavenly vocals:
Carl Wilson on God only Knows
Brian Wilson on Wonderful (from the '66 SMiLE sessions)
Elliott Smith on Between the Barrs
