I'm happy. Happy after so many years of music of still being able to be enthusiastic about a band. Here's a story about someone who falls in love with a music again, like a stupid teenager.
I remember one or two forum-members mentioning Os Mutantes in the old thread "best band of the 60's" two or three years ago. By that time, curious of that name, I burned the compilation "everything is possible!". I quite liked it, but no more than that... Maybe I was not ready.
Some months ago, my girlfriend told me that she heard on a radio broadcast that all Os Mutantes albums were reissued by Universal. I decided to give it another try a few weeks later, and I bought A Divina Comédia Ou Ando Meio Desligado.
After two or three listens, I was totally overwhelmed. Amazed by so much genius, creativity, generosity and extravagance. It felt like listening to the Beatles or The Pixies for the first time. Really.
I bought the first five albums all in a row after that.
I was not disappointed. Each one is a gem. The more I listen to them the more I love them. The fact that they mostly sing in portuguese -that magical language- is in addition to that, another reason for me to be fond of them.
I guess Os Mutantes entered in my top 5 bands of the 60's/70's.
I don't know if they are well known outside Brazil -but I guess they don't have the recognition they deserve, but here in France, they're totally unknown. In fact, until these reissues, it was very difficult to fing their records here.
Is there anyone 'round here who went to see them by the time of their reunion last year? Is there any plans of touring again? Of making a new album?

I saw them on the reunion tour. I'm glad i did, but it wasn't REALLY Mutantes. A) There was no Rita Lee B) Their backing band was quite large and it felt almost Vegas-y C) A lot of the songs had amalgamated arrangements of the Portuguese versions and the English versions (of which i am not a fan) and the sounds they used for the keyboards and guitars borded on cheesy.
However, to hear one of my favorite songs of all times, "A Minha Menina" live, was worth it on its own. Not to mention the equally sublime "Ballada Do Louco" and "Bat Macumba." The first few albums are where its at, before Rita Lee left.

there was a coverless CD floating round the house by Os Mutantes on David Byrne's label, Luaka Bop. I live with a couple of guys from Sao Paolo, must have been one of theirs. It was pretty good.

I picked up their first album not too long ago and have been playing the hell out of it. I have a hard time remembering the names of the songs since they're all in Portuguese (except for the French one, of course), but the third track with Rita Lee singing is one of the most sublime recordings I've ever heard. I went ahead and ordered the second and third records from Light in the Attic a couple of days ago, so hopefully they'll arrive by the end of the week and I can say a little more.

Well I just listenend to 'Panis Et Circences', which I liked, and then 'Ballada Do Louco' which sounded a bit too dated to me.
I will check more out when I can find more online.
EDIT: Oh Shit, I just heard 'A Minha Menina'. So that's who sings that song. I can't remember where I have heard it before (a few places I think), but I really like it.
 I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place

I got the "Everything Is Possible!" collection on the basis of this topic and it really lives up to billing. Better than I could have expected. Plus, it arrived along with "IN-KRAUT: Hip Shaking Grooves Made in Germany 1966-1974", which is also deluxe. So, I get this influx of sixties stuff that I've never heard before. That IS a treat. Upcoming purchase: "IN-KRAUT" volume 2, which is touted as every bit as good. Gotta love it when the old is new.
