who do you think has the best female voice in rock? i'd put my money on Mimi Parker from Low.
her voice is incredible. it's like a lullaby everytime she sings.
beautiful.

Maria Mckee, formerly of Lone Justice, and latterly solo. Does she count as rock? Anyway, best female voice for me.
I find Mimi Parkers voice fantastic on record, but if you listen to Low bootlegs, she does go out of tune occasionally.

you think? the one's i've heard she's always on song. but then a bit of frailty makes it seem more real. like listening to kristin hersh live - her voice often breaks and screeches, and it's just brilliant.
speaking of low live shows - you heard this one - spellbinding.... http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=82027

Altogether, I guess Tanya Donelly - literally shivers and goosebumps when I saw her. Kristin's not far off though: amazing, amazing live show. Liz Frazer, good call.

Yeah, it's amazing, one of the best I've heard. The version of Little Argument With Myself had me playing it over and over again. It's funny, because the seeder thought the vocals were too high in the mix, but that's what makes it.
I'm sure there's a song in that concert where Mimi's voice makes me wince because it sounds off.

How about most unique? I'd say Ms. Satumi from Deerhoof. Also, another vote for Neko Case. Her voice is stunning.

No Siouxsie? Why, Siouxsie, of course. And Bjork (basically based on Sugarcubes' "Life's Too Good" record) Karen Carpenter. Amy Gileadi from a defunct band named Sunfall Festival.
Frankly, there really aren't very many.
This reminds me of a personal insight; there's the voice and the singing. Some people have a really amazing voice, and some people are great singers--a few are both. I think God provides most of the former and the individual provides most of the latter.
Frank Black is an example of someone who excels at the latter--possibly better than anyone, but wasn't blessed all that much with the former. And I generally gravitate toward the singers, more so than the people with a good voice. I think there are somewhere between 100 and 1,000 people with good voices for every good singer.
Other examples of singers: Tom Waits Bjork Paul McCartney Lou Reed Bono Elvis Neil Young Jim Morrison Ella F James Brown Lyle Lovett Bob Dylan Chuck D Tons and tons of old delta blues artists
Some good voices: Karen Carpenter Corey Glover Paul McCartney Jim Morrison Bono Morrissey Ella F Lyle Lovett Chuck D
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I signed up for the FrankBlack.net forums and all I got was this lousy signature. |

Debbie Harry Neko Case Kim Deal Jenny Lewis Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls) Patti Smith Régine Chassagne (Arcade Fire) Emma Pollock (The Delgados) Anita Robinson (Viva Voce) Harriet Wheeler (The Sundays) Amy Millian (Stars) Emily Haines (Metric) Kathleen Hanna Kristin Hersh Tanya Donnelly PJ Harvey Bjork (even if she isn't rock any more) Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) Melissa Auf De Maur Liela Moss (The Duke Spirit) Karen O Louise Wener (Sleeper) Justine Frischmann (Elastica) Sonia Aurora-Madan (Echobelly) Chrissie Hynde Victoria Bergsman (The Concretes)
Yup, I'm a bit of a sucker for a female voice. Hope I didn't miss anyone but I am sure I did.
I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place

Kristin Hersh for sure - its the sheer 'how does she do it?' factor.. i saw her do an inhouse in tower records just after hips and makers was released.. she is very tiny, but she really has an amazing voice, and the sheer volume of it - couldn't believe such a small person could sound like a surround sound speaker system |

I absolutely love Kim's voice, she sounds so beautiful on Off You and Little Trouble Girl. Kristin Hersh's voice is gorgeous on the early Muses stuff, she still has a amazing voice. Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead is also great, Kathleen Hanna rocks. Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson from the B-52's also have amazing voices. Bjork's voice in Birthday still gives me shivers down my spine.

I'll agree with everyone who's mentioned Neko Case. My other top female vocalist is Laura Cantrell, but I wouldn't call her rock by any stretch of the imagination. Well, aside from the fact that she sings backing vocals on TMBG's "The Guitar," which is kind of a rock song.

i initially agreed with the seeder that the vocals were too high, but you're right. they do make this a truly fantastic concert.... so much better than the officially released paris show... but which song do you find mimi's vocals grating cause i'll have a close listen...
