just watched this again after about 5 years and i was blown away - all over again. i really wish they'd release this officially. it deserves it.
a brilliant show encompassing their entire career, unlike anything they've released post-reunion, and it is fantastically shot, directed and edited. much better than the belfort dvd, thats for sure.
i remember buying a copy on NTSC VHS on the internet for US$20 back in the mid 90's as a teenager and being amazed that i receieved the 1988 town and country gig tacked on the end. i couldn't watch it for about a year cause i couldn't play it until i bought a better VCR (i lived in a PAL country), but once i did, i must have watched it 100 times in the first couple months - almost wore out the tape - and it was such a crappy transfer to begin with. have since tracked down a very very good transfer to dvd, and kinda forgot about it for a couple of years...shame on me.
tame has to be one of the most brutal performances ever recorded. the way charles screams down the microphone sends shivers down my spine, with him manhandling the microphone at the end, it's just phenomenal.... and the direction on tame just fits the song perfectly. all you see is charles screaming into the mic and the crowd going ballistic - brilliant. it focuses perfectly on where all the action is....
one thing about thats weird about the direction is that you hardly see a crowd shot until the encore, and then you see them lots. but i digress...
has this concert been uploaded to dime or anything???

I'd love to see that show. An official release would be fabulous. |

I also have this on VHS, kind of crappy quality but it works. It is the best live performance I've seen by them by far. I don't have a dvd on my pc, but do have one connected to TV. How would I go about getting a copy on DVD? If someone could burn one for me that would be sweet, definitely willing to pay...thanks |

This one?
I think I had a clip of River Euphrates from that show on my pc a while back, it looked awesome. That's totally the Pixies for me.. a bunch of kids in their early 20s yelping and squealing, not the nostalgia trip..

I just found a mpg of Velouria from this show on Ares, it's great! Black looks kinda bored, though.

My VHS copy is pretty generated, and besides that I think I've played it thousands of time, sometimes it looks too red!! Yeah a good-no-so-generated-transfer to DVD would rule!! ...and how about the start of the show with Rock Music. hehe
Are there any other pro-shot concerts from the old days? |

yep, thats the one doog.
i know it was recorded for Japanese TV, but has it been broadcast much anywhere else? the first 5 songs were broadcast in New Zealand on a music channel in the late 90's, which i recorded, but i haven't heard it of being shown anywhere else...
and it sounds like if people do have a copy, it's a crappy one.... i think mine, however, is not too bad (doesn't have tracking noise that i've noticed). sure, there will be a number of generations involved, but it is not too bad, and the only noticable annoyance is the blue lights that are often behind frank shimmer slightly sometimes due to the tranfer. and my dvd is PAL, whereas all the other copies i've seen floating round are NTSC
i'm actually reauthoring mine at the moment because it had chapter marks every 5 mins or so - not related to the actual songs at all. i'd certainly be willing to upload it to dime, except my copy is 4.3GB and with my upload speed, that'd take about 10 days to finish.... and also, it should technically be banned from dime since planet of sound and tame have been released officially in audio format...but only if someone tells...
and for people who are curious (and don't already own a copy), here's the tracklist: 01 Intro 02 Rock Music 03 Debaser 04 River Euphrates 05 The Happening 06 Allison 07 Velouria 08 Into The White 09 Bone Machine 10 Gouge Away 11 Hang Wire 12 I Bleed 13 Is She Weird 14 Letter To Memphis 15 Palace Of The Brine 16 Planet Of Sound 17 Where Is My Mind? 18 The Holiday Song 19 Break My Body 20 Blown Away 21 Here Comes Your Man 22 Subbacultcha 23 Mr Grieves 24 Trompe Le Monde 25 The Sad Punk 26 Monkey Gone To Heaven 27 Motorway To Roswell 28 Vamos 29 Head On 30 Tame shot with 7 cameras, and with joey's brother bob appearing as 3rd guitarist on quite a number of the tracks....
related note: does anyone know of any good dvd authoring software. free that is.

i used to have this on vhs but sadly it got lost along the way. i've watched it about a zillion times though so it's burned in to my memory.
great show. i heard a rumor that that's joey's brother who comes out and joins them during wave of mutilation.. |

floop,
it is indeed Bob Santiago who joins as the 3rd guitarist on stage. he plays from the point where the first tromple le monde track is played (song 14) and from memory plays on every song until the end. he's definitely there on tame cause frank ain't playing anything....

They didn't play Wave Of Mutilation at this show.
A DVD from this performance would be awesome. I don't think only crappy ones are circulating. There must be some good VHS somewhere... |

Hey hey hey, we need to get a torrent of this dvd'r. Benji you must do this for us, please. Of if not maybe post it to someone locally who has a faster upload. I want this show so bad, I have a video of river euphrates taken from it and it's amazing.

well i agree MMD, but locally for me is about 1000km away. but i'll get my copy authored correctly and maybe try torrenting it at a later date. but with a max upload speed of 13-14kb/s, a 4.3GB upload is going to take a LONG time.
so as a related note - are there any fans in australia, who are connected to dime and with a decent upload speed, cause if so, i'll send a copy your way and we can both seed it.

Thanks for the teaser upload of Tame! Judging from this one song, the rest of the show must be pretty intense. And your efforts to seed it on dime are much appreciated.

phenomenal! the energy gven off in this song is out of this world. Thanks again (so much). It makes me realise why i like frank black in the first place. Because of the Pixies.
I love watching BF sing without a guitar. One of the funniest things ever. |

Thanks so much for those tasters..... few things interfere with the nape of your neck quite as effectively as that man's vocals on that song (Tame). |

I love the little 'running' arm motions Chuck does on that Tame vid.. later popularised by the "backing singers" in the Headache video..
Thanks loads for sharing those vids!

Agreed but Beth Gibbons of Portishead can have a similar effect on live versions of "Sour Times".

Awesome thanks for the new vids, I'll put up my one of River Eurphrates soon, also uploading doesn't take as long as you might think if you leave your PC on 24/7. Because I am a sad bastard I worked out it would take 104 hours to transfer 4.3 gigs at 12kb/s so like 4 and a half days.
Also for comparison I have a DVD of the recent Brixton Academy show from 5th June 2004 although it's shot by someone in the audience and so the quality while ok in places is pretty bad in others but if there is interest I will probably torrent it.

thanks guys, and i'll upload 1 more video so if anyone has a request of which one to do, i'll do it...the setlist is furhter up the page....
thanks MMD. 102 hours ain't that bad. and also, the new dvd ain't quite 4.3GB - the one i took it from was, but i cut about 10mins of blue screen off the end, so it's 3.8GB now. main reason at the mo' is that this is the first re-authoring i've ever done, and i'm sure someone who knows what they're doing would have done a better version, so would prefer them to upload their version instead of mine.

Wow, thank you so much for these, benji!
I'd propose Break My Body for your bonus vid, although I'm being a bit selfish since I'd like to see how Black plays it!!

Chuckie does some strange lyrics on that Break My Body... the outro bit is beautiful though! Lovely singing from Chuck and Kim.

Aw, thank you, Doog!!
Isn't that...."Warriors....come out to pla-ay!" at the beginning? Oh yeah, it's funny, I though BF used a capo on Velouria-maybe he's playing it a different way? (Or has the guitar tuned up a step, but I wouldn't think so!!)
I'm pretty sure that version of Tame is included on the Alec Eiffel EP (along with Planet Of Sound, from this show?!), going by Black's introduction. I always though Joey played the little intro riff on Trompe, and BF played the arpeggiated chords!! It's funny to see Kim playing a headless bass!!

I think Chuck has that guitar tuned up a half step like on some other songs on Bossanova, he mentions it in some interview on that 'Alec Eiffel' Pixies fansite. He just does it with a capo nowadays cause I guess it's less hassle and means he doesn't have to have one guitar and backup for just a couple of songs.
Yeah, that version of Tame sounded very familiar, specifically what he says at the start. Think I must've got it on my live Pixies downloading flurry when I first got Napster..

Yeah, there's a couple of songs off this concert floating around, all with the intros taken from some old movie. I definately fell in love with River Euphrates after seen that video a few years ago. His "one sip from the salty wine" shout is just UNBELIEVABLE. some of the vids you post here I haven't seen though. thanks alot! |
