I'm going to make maple syrup in my yard this year, and I cant figure out the amount of sap collected per amount of time. In other words, how much sap flows from a 18" maple in one hour?

I have to figure out the times.

Thanx to anybody

Michael

Depends on the weather, on the tree, on a whole bunch of variables. Do you have a sugarhouse or access to one? It's a big operation. Good luck.

By 18" maple you mean 18 foot, right?

A fascinating first post.

Anyone who rates maple syrup has to be having a laugh.

I'm assuming this is what you mean Carolyn.

Floop's conspicuous by his absence but even he'd know that tap-worthy maples are bigger than 18 inches.

I would suggest hitting the Google and doing some research before going to a frank black website for the basics of maple syrup production, despite the ongoing inside joke. Unless of course your real name is floop and you like to make duplicate accounts.

The next new user's first post will be entitled "pictures of beautiful baby seals in speedos drinking and driving with a sasquatch"

Ah, leave the poor guy alone, everyone loves talking about maple syrup.

Take maples, blend them til they're gooey. Right?

Yann, even with that Vermont comment, you're always welcome here (though it may be that I plan to use your visit to educate you on maple syrup)...

PS I know this has come up, but warm maple syrup plus snow = Canadian candy.

Saskatchewan is the new Alberta, Carolyn. Except not so full of cowboys, rednecks, mad cows, and ultra-right wing nutjobs. Oh, we still have our share (except for the mad cows, they're a happy lot here), but...

I'd go to Paraguay if Dean lived there :)

Plus, I love those strange, unpronounceable names. You know, Saskatchewan. Kamtchatka. Oklahoma. Condoleezza. Uncompahgre. We don't have that in France...

You know, when I'm at IHOP or something, I always use the fruit-flavored syrups, rather than the maple.

Incidentally, Yann, if you do come here, later is better. April is still considered winter, though we call it spring. Ask FB. He had to drive through a pretty wicked blizzard the last time the Catholics were here, and that was the last weekend in April. Late May is the ideal time, I think.

PS I resent my province being associated in any way with Condoleeza. :P

VoVat - me too, just nice to have a change, plus that stuff doesn't qualify as maple syrup anyway. Well, I've never been to an IHOP, but Phil's does the same thing...

Frog - Not until I'm either morbidly obese or nearly dead. Seriously, you should see it down there.

It doesn't generally get too cold in April and a snowstorm like that at that time of the year, up until the last three or four years, would've been unheard of.
