Uh... That would make Poland the group winner. Or did you just post rubbish while secretly mailing Llama your actual predictions? Mmh, clever...

I'm backing Germany to win by surreptitious, underhanded means, using their home advantage somehow.

I wasn't aware of this until just now but apparently Scotland won this thing.
I know being English I'm not supposed to like Scotland winning anything but I sort of have a soft spot for all the other British national teams (unless they actually beat England, of course...). So, well done Scotland.

There's a new documentary film out called Once In A Lifetime, about the New York Cosmos. Also, One Day In Europe, which is four stories using a big Champions League match as a backdrop.

Pele actually gets his name from the Irish word for football. I was Googling to find info about that, and I came across this:
http://www.the-kingdom.ie/news/story.asp?j=19002
"Pele is known by his nickname only and it was an Irish priest who saw the promise of a youngster kicking a football that called him Pele which is the Irish for football. His real name is Edson Arantes Do Nascimento."

So, who's got tickets for the Cup? I'm not that bothered by not having any eventually, cause we couldn't have gone anyway due to Mrs Denis' pregnancy. I have 2 friends who managed to get some for the Mexico-Iran match. I guess they weren't the hardest to get, but still... I do have my ticket for Saturday's France-Mexico friendly game in Paris though. Turned out they're worth quite a bit of money on ebay now cause it's advertised as "Zidane's last game ever at the Stade de France"! I have a spare ticket, I'm gonna make some dough.

Well, since you asked and I kind of like to talk about it: I was lucky enough to get me a ticket for a round of sixteen match. Winner of group H (Saudi Arabia, Spain, Tunisia, Ukraine) against second of group G (France, Switzerland, South Corea, Togo).
Now, in the fifth (and last) sales period it seems to be even harder to get a ticket due to the "first come, first serve" mode. I have spent many a time in the fifa ticket shop's "waiting room" only to be told that either there were to many visitors on the site, or the ticket in question was no longer available.
Have fun at the Stade de France, Denis. Will you be rooting for one of the teames (at least more than the other) or are you trying to be neutral? Sounds like a bit of a conflict of interest to me. |

hmm, yeah, probably worth a fiver. Who'll play up front with him Ronaldo or Robinho? Or somebody I've forgotten about?
Oh, and I read today that Coupet is pissed off at Barthez because Barthez wouldn't complete an ice climb because of a sore calf. So, the French decide to take their players climbing before the World Cup? Isn't that a bit barmy?

The Brazil line-up is a tough one. It all depends on their formation but I don't think they will start Robinho OR Ronaldo. I would have said Kaka and Ronaldinho behind Adriano, but like I said, it all depends on their formation. The Argentina side will be a tough one to call too.

I hope it a good one with all top teams getting outa the group stages. I must say last european cup was poor due to greece's un-football type displays (thank god they're not in the world cup). last world cup was poor too. Holland never made it. France and Argentina did'nt get outa the group stages. semi-finals were brazil vs turkey and germany vs south korea (bad for the game, to be honest)... germany were a terrible side in that world cup and still are (apart from ballack)... |

lonely persuader.......how on earth does that make sense? Football's about winning, whether that's through fast, flowing attacking football, or solid, tight defense. If France and Argentina went out, it's because they weren't good enough to get through. There's as much skill in defense as attack, it's just different. Greece won because they worked as a team and played a system that few teams are used to playing against. In fact, that's football, teamwork and tactics.
To suggest it's only good if the 'glamour' teams win is ridiculous.
I agree though, Germany are a terrible side ;) They'll probably get to the semi-final though, which I think would be a good tournament for them.

Robert Green got injured in the England B game tonight so it looks like Scott Carson is going to the World Cup instead. Has anyone else seen the injury? It looked nasty and he went off on a strecher with his legs strapped up after making a mess of a goal kick (which gifted the opposition a goal). I think an injury to his groin from an earlier challenge.
Doesn't Ballack have an ankle injury? I don't think it's serious and he wont miss the World Cup, but still...it's good news for other teams if he isn't fully fit.

Surely Mike Pollitt should be on stand-by at least? He did play in 23 Premiership games this season and was in excellent form to help Wigan to the League Cup final.

I always thought it was a disgrace that Sven never gave big Nigel Martyn a look in. Obviously Im biased and obviously it doesn't matter now because he's injured but I still think Sven should have at least considered taking him. We have a chronic shortage of decent keepers in this country, and although Big Nige is knocking on 40, he still does the job week in week out for us. He's a hell of a lot better than Calamity James or Mullet Man Green.
