I would. Maybe it's because he hasn't been playing regularly for Arsenal, or because he isn't as good for France as he is for Arsenal. I'd still take him though, the guy is class.

This is getting confusing with the two threads. I posted this in the Champions League thread in response to Homers saying that Gerrard is a footballing god.
yep, if England played something like....
Robinson
Neville Ferdinand Terry A. Cole
Beckham Lampard Carrick J. Cole
Gerrard
Owen
That's a pretty good side, with the option of bringing on Crouch for maybe Carrick if needed.

The German Squad
Jens Lehmann (Arsenal) Oliver Kahn (Bayern München) Timo Hildebrand (VfB Stuttgart) Marcell Jansen (Borussia Mönchengladbach) Arne Friedrich (!Hertha BSC Berlin!) Robert Huth (Chelsea) Jens Nowotny (Bayer Leverkusen) Philipp Lahm (Bayern München) Per Mertesacker (Hannover 96) Christoph Metzelder (Borussia Dortmund) Sebastian Kehl (Borussia Dortmund) Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern München) Torsten Frings (Werder Bremen) Michael Ballack (Bayern/Chelsea) Thomas Hitzlsperger (VfB Stuttgart) Tim Borowski (Werder Bremen) Bernd Schneider (Bayer Leverkusen) David Odonkor (Borussia Dortmund)
Mike Hanke (VfB Wolfsburg) Oliver Neuville (Borussia Mönchengladbach) Miroslav Klose (Werder Bremen) Gerald Asamoah (Schalke 04) Lukas Podolski (Werder Bremen)
Yes I'm quite happy. One of the reporters said after Klinsis press conference that there may be other strong german players left out of the team, but nobody of them stronger than the ones included. I think that's right. As sad as it is, but: this is as good as it gets at the moment. Maybe I wouldn't have picked Hanke (I mean wtf?!?), Nowotny (quite old with a history of injuries but enough experience I guess) and Hitzelsperger and would have preferred Kuranyi, Manuel Friedrich and Scholl instead, but hey! Like I said, the difference wouldn't be that big.
The inclusion of Odonkor is quite a surprise, though. Young player of Borussia Dortmund. Not a single appearance in the national team so far, and only one goal this season, but he is the fastest player in the Bundesliga and has a hell of a cross. With him on the right flank crossing the ball to Klose... Aah. Can't wait to see that.
The BIG problem of that team is the central defense. Huth doesn't get much playtime at Chelsea and is not that fast a player. Metzelder is injured all the time (like right at the moment!) and Nowotny had his peak a few years ago. That leaves Mertesacker as the only decent central defender. Ok, one can allways hope that they are in the form of their lives during the WC and carried by the team spirit. |

Isn't he suspended for the first two games as well?
I read that Klinsman had been criticised for fielding an inexperienced defence - is that why Nowotny got the nod? And isn't Scholl about 50?;)

Yes to all three.
I forgot that Hanke is suspended for the first two games because of his red card in the Confed Cup game against Mexico. One more reason to not pick him. But he won't play anyway, as he is striker #5.
Nowotnys experience, along with a decent performance during the second half of the season are his selling points. Huth, Mertesacker and Metzelder need someone to guide them, I guess. Still would have preferred to see Manuel Friedrich in his position, who played a grat season with Mainz 05.
And Mehmet Scholl is 35 years young. Maybe doesn't have the strengh to play an entire game anymore. But he is still one of those players, who can decide a game with a single action of his. He can do crazy things with the ball. Last one of a dying breed (at least here in germany). |

Wouldn't it be safer to wait until the first days of June before you make your picks? Otherwise an injury during a friendly or training might make one of your picks obsolete.
And look out! There are players that you can buy, which didn't make the cut for the actual team. |

You can always make your ideal team now and if one or two get injured make some transfers nearer to the start of the tournament. (You're allowed unlimited transfers until the first round is played).

You can't transfer players back though once you've got rid of them so don't do anything drastic so soon.

You pick your team with the budget you've got, then they score points on appearances/goals/saves etc. The winner is the one with the most points at the end, obviously. I think you can make transfers and such, I haven't read in detail. It's easy like.

Ok, by now everyone has named their squad for the world cup. And I'm sure a lot of discussion is going on about whether the respective manager made the right choices or not. At least here in germany expert/commentator hell broke loose. So it's time for that Nick Hornby quote:
(In "Fever Pitch" he describes how as a boy he went with his father to see an England game against Scotland. And is proud of his team.) "..., it wasn't just the comparative quality that enabled me to feel unambigous about that England side. The ambiguity came with age: by the time I was sixteen or seventeen I knew better than the England manager. ... But in 1969, as far as I was concerned, there was no such thing as a bad England player. Why would Sir Alf pick someone who wasn't up to the job? What would be the point? I took it on trust that the eleven players who destroyed Scotland that night ... were the best in the country."
That is so fitting these days! And it allways makes me smile. I mean, what would be the point?!? |

OK, the WC 2006 predictions competition...new thread, or in here??
I'll post the fixtures in here for the moment, but if it gets too busy, I'll edit and start a new thread. You can either post your predictions in here (best, I think) or email them to me.
Rules are 3 points for correct score, 1 point for correct result (ie win/lose/draw). 5 points for predicting a group winner correctly and I'm going to try and work out bonus questions for each group/top scorer/overall winner. Bonus Questions will be worth 5 points each, apart from Top Scorer and WC Winner, which will be worth 15 points.
That which does not kill me postpones the inevitable.
