In particular, I'd give gerrard and J.cole a free reign to wander, gerrard is prob. the best england have now. |

I'd say so. He's the best all round midfielder in the World Cup.

Baines has played nearly every game this season and has been consistent. Plus he's already been capped at U-21 level. If he was playing for the reserves at Chelsea or Arsenal I have no doubt he would be in the squad.
It's hardly even a gamble compared to Walcott.

Sorry dude, I forgot about Baines. He's the left back isn't he? I remember him being linked with Liverpool I think when you were in the Championship. Yeah he is a good player and probably fitter than Bridge, that's for sure.
I think he is less likely to take a gamble on a defender though, which makes sense.

No. Klinsmann will name the 23 players next monday (15.5.).
There shouldn't be too many surprises, though. Since he has given the post of the first goalkeeper to Lehmann instead of Kahn, the team is pretty much set. He's still not sure about the defense, but doesn't have that much of a choice I'm afraid. It might even be the time for a comeback of Nowotny.
We'll see next week. I will post the final squad here.
And sure, I'm up for a prediction game. But perhaps a little later in the month, don't you think? When everyone has announced their teams and played a friendly or two?

And what's wrong with Owen Hargreaves?!? He is a very good midfielder in my opinion, who knows how to defend but can play an offensive role as well. |

Might stick a couple of quid each way on Klose too at 25/1. The host nation often has a player near the top of the scoring charts.

Yeah but Owen Hargreaves plays in a sub-standard league.
Only joking
I personally wouldn't pick him though. I don't think it's that Hargreaves is a bad player, but when we're struggling for strikers why leave out Bent/Defoe and attacking midfielder Shaun Wright-Phillips?

I think if King had gone then Hargreaves may not have made it. He wants back up for that holding role that Carrick may play, and King may have had he gone.
I think he may also have picked Hargreaves because it is in the nation where he plays. Perhaps it will bring out the best in him (is that good enough?).

I'd have thought that Jenas was the superfluous player in the squad (all other previous arguments aside) - there's enough adaptability within the other midfielders to cover, and England could've done with another striker. How Sven could pick Andy Johnson above Darren Bent for the stand-bys is beyond me.

Yeah Johnson is a strange one, and I can see your point with Jenas. He's a good player, I like him, but he offers nothing we don't already have in about 5 other players.

I think we're all forgetting about the one man who can single handedly lead England to glory. Yes, he's had his critics but he's a top quality player with all the attributes of a world class superstar like Maradonna or Pele and had he been included in the squad I feel our actual chances of lifting the cup would be significantly increased. A perfect option considering our depleted strikeforce and quite possibly one of the greatest players to pull on the three lions shirt. Yes, that's right people, the man to lead us to glory is...Emile Heskey :D

What does "each way" mean in this context?
And Both Toni and Klose are on fire at the moment. (Although the latter only playing in a substandart league...) |

I think of this thread as being for international football, and with this in mind, I'd just like to say:
Scotland 5 - 1 Bulgaria
courtesy of the Kirin Cup in Japan, which Japan are using as a warm up for the World Cup.

to try out players with a view to preparation for European Championship qualifying which begins in September I think. Two players scored two goals on their debut today, which bodes well.

yep, I didn't see much of either tbh. Teale got taken off for Burke in the second half and Burke scored two goals. McCulloch had an effort from about 18 yards which would have gone right over a rugby post. We played well for once

Teale is usually the boo-boy at Wigan. It's rare that I've sat thorough a match and not heard "Bloody rubbish Teale!" about 50 times. He's got pace though and has finally learned how to cross a ball. McCulloch is solid when he plays on the left wing and usually scores more goals from there than when he plays as a striker. He never seems to do anything of note for Scotland though when he's played which is strange because he's a key man for us.

Yes, along with England in 1967.
There's a spreadsheet for download here with oodles of World Cup info and stats.
http://www.michaelwray.co.nz/sheets.html
Also, as far as the prediction competition is concerned, should we go for predicting each game (3pts for a correct score, 1 point for a correct result) and submit all our predictions (right up to the final) before the tournament starts, or should we submit scores before each round (which could get messy).
Or we could just predict who goes through from each group and so on (less fun ;)
Bonus points could maybe be awarded for guessing the Golden Boot winner, the eventual winner and maybe some random questions such as "who will be first to score for England?".
Oh, and if Dean or Brian pop their heads in here, in the absence of any tangible prize for the winner, any chance of a custom status? Maybe?
Any other thoughts and suggestions?

True, Giuly's absence is a bit of a surprise. No Anelka either. And what about Micoud and Ismael? Both very good players for Bayern and Werder. Where they even in consideration?
And I read that Domenech chose Barthez as #1 over Coupet. How did he explain that? Past merits? International experience?
Tomorrow at about one Klinsi is going to announce his team. |

Apparently Domenech said that he picked players who had a good team spirit, which rules out Anelka immediately. When weighing up the goalkeeping #1 he said he took into account form/experience (or something like that), but the impression I got was that Barthez's experience is what clinched it for him.
I've never heard of Dhorasoo or Marouda. And yeah, Boumsong going is an absolute joke.....France will lose if they're forced into playing him.

Dhorasoo is very talented but he plays in a crappy team (PSG). Yeah, some of Domenech's choices are very puzzling, but hey, Jacquet was treated like shit before the '98 cup because of his selections and eventually he won the final. I'd have preferred Coupet over Barthez but we'll see.
