Oh I dunno why I thought Salford. I think it must be because of the Scholesy thing, I thought he was from Salford.

Yeah they often claim that. I think he may have been born there, but he was brought up in Middleton, and went to my school there.

For some reason, only the French see our team defeat Brazil tomorrow. I wonder why.

I posted these before the bonus questions were asked. Since the Germany game has been and gone I'll have to just answer the remaining bonus questions. (I'm sticking with the results.)
Italy 2-0 Ukraine - No penalties will be missed. England 2-1 Portugal - Walcott will come on in the 77th min. Brazil 3-2 France - France will have 49% posession.

You were right about that. I had sooooo much beer yesterday.
What a match! It was of an almost unbearable intensity. Not always fun for the eye maybe, but in every situation was the potential for a game winning move. At least it felt that way for me. And with Argentina having more possesion of the ball (37%-63% or so at one point at the match) that was really frightening.
But do you know what all the agitation right after the the penaltys all about? I was too busy jumping around to notice much. I only saw a lot of agitated players and staff members and Oliver Bierhoff held back by some german player.
Hey, and I saw France's win against Spain, too. Before the match I was slightly favouring Spain ('cause I have a few spanish friends, not caring much for both teams otherwise) but then found myself sitting right beside the french corner. And that was lots of fun! To see the almost fatalistic depression after Raul's penalty change into pure joy after Ribery's goal.
What I didn't get was, why the french coach let Trezegol on the bench and played with only one striker. But when you win 3-1 you don't have to answer those kind of qustions, I suppose.
Off to another day with footie & barbecue. |

If any of you Frenchies can organise your team to break both Cristiano Ronaldo's legs, I'll make it worth your while.

Break his legs? You'd better send Rooney to break his balls, I heard he's good at it...

C'mon, they deserved that. It actually looks like he was sent off for the push, which is just bizarre, it was barely anything.
But yes, definitely break his legs. At Euro 2004 I had a desktop at work with Ronaldo crying on it. This time I want him on a stretcher.

I haven't seen the game (I saw from 80' on) actually, and I just saw a replay of the red card so I can't judge. Still, as much as I thought Portugal would win, I would've loved to see a France-England game in the semifinals.

Channeling Pixiesteve look!
Of course there's no chance England would have gone any further. If we couldn't beat Portugal who aren't a great team by any stretch of the imagination, we couldn't have taken any of the other contenders on. Although, to be fair, it could be argued that Portugal couldn't beat England either...

I would just like to point out that Owen Hargreaves was excellent today. I never thought he was any good but today he was outstanding for 120 minutes. Only England player to score his penalty too.
The rest of the England penalties were awful.

Prepare yourselves people, because it's time for...The Great English Excuse.
First off, Rooney's sending off was fair, no matter whether it was only for the push or not, things evened themselves out. I actually smiled when he was sent off because it taught him a much needed lesson. Still, Ronaldo was a jerk for doing what he did.
I think the most annoying part was the penalty shootout. Ricardo was annoyingly brilliant. Lampard was predictably incompetent. In fact, I wouldn't have nominated him to take a penalty even if the goalkeeper was limbless. Most annoying of all though, in a part when England needed to score, they did so, only for the referee to fall for Ricardo's childish playground cry. "Wasn't ready," he says. Well, I sympathise with you, Ricardo, it happened to me once too. Every time someone scored a penalty against me in primary school in fact.
And then there's that damn 4-5-1...When will managers learn that lone strikers just. don't. work?
I always remind myself of the upside of England losing major competitions, though. All those fat drunken louts in the pubs can't go round celebrating like they scored the winning goal themselves. Huzzah!

That seems to be a pretty fair post Samurai, well summed up, but I'm not sure the ref had blown his whistle for Carragher to take the penalty when he did.
Overall though there are no complaints from me. We have been poor all through the competition and would've gone out in the next round anyway.
