Foreign press always take these things too long. He's an absolute asshole, I'm not defending him (he trained our team some years ago, so I know that for sure), but I don't think he's like Hitler or anything.

I only agree with your Italy win. Otherwise i think you've picked 3 losers. How could England be favourites vs Portugal and likewise Germany???? That's just what bookies probably get in bets. I rekon Brazil will go out, to leave France, Portugal, Argentina and Italy.

I actually put money on France to go through.
So that's three of the four countries I come from through to the last 8. I just wish Poland could have made it a clean sweep.

Yeah I wanted Vieira to deck him. He should have taunted him when he scored.
Henry was shameful once again though. Asshole.

Ah, the Henry issue. Do you guys really think he should've been punished for what he did? Nobody thinks so here obviously but I see he's being heavily criticized abroad for it. I really don't see what all the fuss is about. I'll give you one thing though: he did play terribly yesterday.

It's exactly the sort of thing that needs stamping out. Exaggerating a challenge is one thing, but holding your face when you have only been hit in the chest is just way too much. He was trying to get the guy sent off by acting. That's just too far. I don't like the guy anyway. he has no humility and never admits he is wrong.
And yes, oddly he was very quiet. Still a great player whom I love watching (when he concentrates on the football).

Basically, Henry was wrong to hold his face. It was a free kick. Puyol crossed right into him, which was stupid cos neither of those were gonna get the ball. It was the left back who was gonna win the race to it, Puyol just thought he'd help out his left back with a small bit of obstruction (which came back to haunt him). However, it was wrong for Henry to hold his face. It was'nt worth a card for Puyol, but was a free kick. Nothing will be done to Henry about it. |

Red card??? what the hell are you talking about. It would be a yellow card (if the referee warranted it, and a harsh one). Usually there are just urged to get up off their feet. Ye English and yer fair play crap, as if the english play fair. Ye just like a hard fast game so ya can foul the opposition and stop the good foreign players from playing (since England only have 2 international standard players). |

I believe they need to start giving reds for cheating as blatant as that, especially when it involves someone not just trying to win a free-kick, but trying to get an opponent sent off. It's really quite simple, if they do that, it will either stop or be vastly reduced. If they don't then the cheating will continue.
You can condone cheating if you like, that's your choice, it just reflects badly on you as a person.

Well, yeah, I just didn't see anything that remotely warranted a red card unless he'd been on a yellow card already. Even then, he was still fouled. Just surprised Homers, you seem quite vehement about this.

Haha, no not really, but they do need to get something done about it. Hey if they do, two of our players will suffer the most (Ruud and Ronaldo - well our players for now), but I don't care, it needs sorting in mine and a lot of other people's opinion.

I enjoyed his, "I'm not a racist, I was just using racist comments to fire up the troops" defense. For better or worse, he wouldn't have survived another week on the job in the US. |

I posted a rant earlier in this thread about how not punishing diving would slowly strangle the life out of the game but nobody seemed to care In my eyes, refs need to grow some balls and punish diving. If a player goes down and its not a legitimate challenge/foul/tangle of legs then clearly its a dive and therefore a booking. Refs need to stop telling players to get to their feet when they dive and start brandishing the yellows (I think a red card is a bit extreme for simulation/diving homers).

aren't they already doing that? Schwalbes are punished on this tournament not all the schwalbes, but not all the goals that were made were noticed either

Right Homer, since you do play footy. Often you get a tap or kick on the ankles which you know the ref will not blow for, unless you give a shout or end up fallin' .
In the league I play, u pretty much have to go to ground to get the ref's to pay attention. If your still standing obviously the challenge was'nt too bad, in many of their opinion. I know these would not be world class ref's. But I can see where it comes from.
Basically, I am adament it WAS a foul on Henry after seening it again. He would not have gotten that foul if he stayed on his feet. The holding the face thing is another issue that I agree with all here about and have stated it in the other post. He was wrong there.
All I'm saying is that the standard of refereeing is poor and leads playing to trying to influence the referee to get often "just" decisions in their favour. |
