The ref was way over the top in that game, it wasn't even that dirty. It was great news for England though, even if Figo should have walked too. They can't ban him because the ref gave a yellow for it (somehow).
Ronaldo should make it back, but a whack on the same thigh from Cole early doors, should put him to bed (and I'm a United fan).
Anyway, despite another very average performance from us, I reckon we will beat Portugal.

For a British standard, I guess.

Yes by British standards, you girly continental type.
I like your Cole vs. Ronaldo theory, Mike. He did really well in this match in Euro 04, but I think this time we've got a better chance.

Just a little comment about Holland - Portugal. In the second half, didn't Holland refuse to play the ball back after it was kicked out by Portugal because of injury? The crowd obviously perceived it as a tremendous lack of sportmansship.
--------------------------------- http://myspace.com/eviltordivel
Yeah that was really mean, and they did it two times. But hey it's Holland... they're just brutes. And I don't like the way they play. Portugal deserved to win. We will kick England's asses next time.
pas de bras pas de chocolat
Yeah you're both right about that. Still, this is the shit you get when fake injury, slow goalkicks, zillion yelow and 4 red cards, 2 or 3 fights happen instead playing football. Again, Portugal was right to play that way, they were on the winning hand, but the referee should have stopped whisteling the life out of the game. As for the playing of Holland, we played great in 1998, Euro 2000,Euro 2004. Some people say that we played the best football of the tournament, but that didn't make us champions. Now we have played like shit and I feel a lot better that I did in 1998, 2000 and 2004. If you lose, lose good.

Actually we have been shit since we lost the game against Italy in 2000, we didn't play that good in 2004 either (better than Germany of course!)

I admire your fair-play, Jop. You're the only guy I know who still says "we" talking about his team after they've lost.

I think they'll need to lose another before Australia have a chance ;) Mind you, it could go to penalties, and I'd never bet on the Italians if it came to penalty kicks.

I think you'll find it was a penalty Steve. Shouldn't have been though.
Fuck Lucas Neil anyway, dirty bastard! I do feel sorry for the others though, and Hiddink.

Tough way to end it for the 'Roos. Neill's got to stay on his feet there and play the ball with only a few seconds to go. To me it looked like more of a dive than a foul, but why even let the ref make that choice.

ok, so there were 7 penalties in the game......is that going to cause a huge uproar amongst the bonus hunters? :D
And Australia had 58% of possession according to the BBC.

Some very funny Chinese commentary from the Ita/Aus game last night.....
quote: According to the Associated Press, this is how Huang Jianxiang relayed the moment when Fabio Grosso went down under Lucas Neill's "challenge" in the last 10 seconds of the match to the millions of Chinese viewers on state-run CCTV.
Penalty! Penalty! Penalty! Grosso's done it, Grosso's done it! The great Italian left back! He succeeded in the glorious traditions of Italy! Facchetti, Cabrini and Maldini, their souls are infused in him at this moment! Grosso represents the long history and traditions of Italian soccer, he's not fighting alone at this moment! He's not alone!
More was to come when Francesco Totti converted the spot-kick.
Goooooal! Game over! Italy win! Beat the Australians! They do not fall in front of Hiddink again! Italy the great! Left back the great! Happy birthday to Maldini! Forza Italia! The victory belongs to Italy, to Grosso, to Cannavaro, to Zambrotta, to Buffon, to Maldini, to everyone who loves Italian soccer! Hiddink ... lost all his courage faced with Italian history and traditions ... He finally reaped fruits which he had sown! They should go home. They don't need to go as far away as Australia as most of them are living in Europe. Farewell!

a-fucking-we-bloody-some I don't think anyone would've guessed that score. I had forgotten how it feels to win a match, it's nice really... Funny also to think that this probably is the beginning of a 20-year long hate era between Spain and France. You hear me whore?

Germany v. Argentina 16:00 BST - 30 Jun, 2006 - Very tough to call this one, home turf gives Germany the edge. Italy v. Ukraine 20:00 BST - 30 Jun, 2006 - Who doesn't like an underdog, plus it's you're last chance to root for Sheva for a while. England v. Portugal 16:00 BST - 01 Jul, 2006 - Another tough call, England in extra time. Brazil v. France 20:00 BST - 01 Jul, 2006 - Brazil may give up a goal here, but they won't lose....

It was nice to see the Spanish coach sent packing.
Not many surprises. 6 of 8 remaining teams have won the World Cup before. Only Uruguay is missing. I bet that's a record. 3 out 8 in 2002. 5 out 8 in 1998. 3 out 8 in 1994. |

I thought the opposite: I didn't like your team 'til yesterday. I still don't like it much, to be fair.
