"Since winning in 1954, Germany have only been eliminated from the World Cup before the semi-finals on three occasions, all against nations from Eastern Europe."

That's an amazing stat.

Mexico look good for the second half though. Should've been a red card for Heinze too. They've got a chance.

I would have liked Mexico to have won, but at least this way we get to see Germany v Argentina, and I just can't imagine either of those teams going out so it should be a better game than Germany v Mexico.

Harsh on Mexico, though Argentina had a perfectly good goal disallowed (evened things up I guess)

The prediction comp looks like this now:

toeknee	88
kelladwella	88
llamadance	83
Pixiestu	75
Vilainde	61
Cheeseman	60

Everyone got both results right tonight, but noone guessed either score correctly. Only myself and Denis got a bonus qu. correct - the one relating to the Germany game.

Germany were a joy to watch earlier. Something like 26 shots. The Swedish goalkeeper had a very busy day indeed!

It's nice to know that either Germany or Argentina will be going out in the next round.

you know, before today there was no way I thought Germany could beat Argentina. However, I think Germany are on a roll, there's something about them......like Liverpool in the CL last year. And Mexico showed that if you get in about Argentina with pace then you've got a chance.

L'arbitre, enculé!
I kinda knew Mexico would give Argentina a hard time cause they know each other very well. But I'm glad that I saw them play well.

My thoughts exactly.

Ok, admittedly I had my fingers crossed for Mexico, but I think Germany has a fair chance against Argentina after yesterdays matches. The whole team seems to be on fire somehow. Especially Miro & Poldi. And they even PLAY football. Klinsmann did some good work there.

You can't imagine the level of euphoria that has overtaken the country. It's unreal.

I'm really looking forward to todays matches. Should be a tough one for England, if Ecuador manages to keep the game open long enough. And Portugal-Netherlands: two offensive-orientated teams in a ko-game...

This game has penalty kicks written all over it. Well, unless Robinson cocks up beforehand.

OK, for a football neophyte, this world cup has been very exciting. The Italy/US game was interesting.I watched Mexico lose at a Mexican food restaurant yesterday. Then, the England game has kind of gotten me hooked on this. Nice free kick-perfect placement just about. Man, Rooney had some nice plays...too bad they couldn't finish on any of those.

Super, are you serious? England played like Germany during the last world cup. The game was boring as hell, the only thrill coming from the fact that it was a ko-match and one bad/brilliant move could decide it.
And has done so: the freekick was awsome. Not unsaveable, though.

Well, I enjoy the whole scene, the crowd, a couple of good moves. And the magnitude of win or go home. Still, I have seen so little football in my days that anything on this level is exciting. Unfortunately, I have missed the Germany games except for a little of the first round while I was at work.

The game was terrible.....England dragged Ecuador down I think. What I really want to know is when did John Terry and Frank Lampard become so pish?

Well, maybe not pish, but Lampard, despite having practically the most shots on goal in the whole world cup, can't score, and for me has been pretty anonymous in the games. And Terry is looking decidedly dodgy with his head. Is it just the flight of the ball being funny?
Paul Robinson too.....not the safe pair of hands I've always seen him to be.

Netherlands or Portugal will tear England apart I'd expect.

Most entertaining match in world cup history. Why are the commentators/pundits pretending they don't like to see it?! Sure, no one approves of it, but that doesn't mean we can take our eyes off it!

Denis has scored highest in the 2nd round so far and is the only one to correctly predict a score (Por/Hol) - wish the bonus had been yellow cards on that one.

Ah well, as long as he doesn't ask for expensive beer.
That's the first time I've seen Portugal play in the tournament, and I really think (with a few ifs) we can take them. They'll have no Deco, no Costinho, and if video is our friend, nothing from angry, angry Figo.

There's also Cristiano Ronaldo's thigh injury which had him blubbing. England couldn't have a better chance of going through to be honest. It's Brazil or Spain in the semi's isn't it? Barring upsets.

Haha, sorry. I didn't even realise I was dismissing France. That maybe shows how far they've fallen, that they're not even on my radar. Heh, they'll probably win 3-0 now.

Holland was pretty bad
still I feel fucked in the behind
a second half should still be 45 minutes of playing football
yesterday it was 20 minutes of football and 25 minutes
of referee-stupidness. I don't blame Portugal, they get what they wanted, scored a good goal and then just quit playing. What's with all those yellow cards anyway, let us fucking play and try to break through a stone wall. That being said, we only had a chance of scoring before we got our first red car (damn you Figo, burn in hell), so I guess we lost fair and square.

I only really saw the second half, and Holland looked much the better team. They've got real class and strength in depth, which I'm not sure Portugal have. Lucky for England!

Just a little comment about Holland - Portugal. In the second half, didn't Holland refuse to play the ball back after it was kicked out by Portugal because of injury? The crowd obviously perceived it as a tremendous lack of sportmansship.
